we are joined by the mayor of daytona beach. thanks for joining us. as we see the national death toll soar, crowds at your beach, i want to get your reaction when you saw those crowds gathering at daytona beach, what did you think? >> quite naturally, i was concerned. we didn't see much social distancing in those situations so i was alarmed and concerned. more concerned with the businesses and some of the impact that it had on them and seeing folks when they were off the beach not practicing social distancing when they were walking the sidewalks, and no one had on a mask very much. >> what are you doing to make sure it doesn't happen again? >> well, right now it's a lot different because the weather has taken a turn so it is now raining. that day we had a crowd of people who came from orlando and miami and they promoted it through social media and decided they would come to daytona beach for sort of a big celebration of sorts because they were happy to be out. now we are back to our normal setting where most folks are practicing social distancing. the

seems like what we saw at daytona beach and the island of georgia and ocean city at maryland. massive crowds and no masks. now what happens medically? >> now we watch and wait. it really is a shame that things opened like this on memorial day weekend. it could have been an opportunity to showcase creative public health measures to encourage masks wearing and people encouraged to walk separately or sit on the beach separately. now we wait and see. part of the difficult thing of this virus is it takes a little time to spread there. there is a long presymptomatic phase and some people get very sick and require hospitalization, it takes a number of weeks. we learned about april and may and we'll learn about may in june. in the meantime we just do the best we can to improve public health messaging so we don't you know test the virus and give it so much opportunities to flo flouri flourish. >> many people are not from daytona beach, they're coming out of town. they're going back to their own community after being in a large group and no masks. how concerning is that dr. reiner? >> i

i am abo 20 minutes south of daytona beach and it's raining right now here, so not many people on thech, but yesterday there was lots of traffic, lots of people moving in crowds, getting to be on the shore here in the southeastern part of the united states. i think it shows that people seem to think that once two mohs have passed, they are able to go freely about and live their lives. however, we are still seeing local and government officials saying hold on, put on the brakes right now. we need to continue to have the social distancing measures. wear masks and be smart about this. in the southeastern portion of the united states or we have seen a lot of states and cities start to open up a -- earlier than other parts of the country, there could be a second wave in the summer or the fall. i hope we don't see the results of this, but we could see a very dire picture here a couple of weeks from now. anchor: thank you very much for that update from florida. the u.k. has anounced it will be can -- it will continue to reopen venues in june as long as progress in containing coronavirus cont
