we are joined by the mayor of daytona beach. thanks for joining us. as we see the national death toll soar, crowds at your beach, i want to get your reaction when you saw those crowds gathering at daytona beach, what did you think? >> quite naturally, i was concerned. we didn't see much social distancing in those situations so i was alarmed and concerned. more concerned with the businesses and some of the impact that it had on them and seeing folks when they were off the beach not practicing social distancing when they were walking the sidewalks, and no one had on a mask very much. >> what are you doing to make sure it doesn't happen again? >> well, right now it's a lot different because the weather has taken a turn so it is now raining. that day we had a crowd of people who came from orlando and miami and they promoted it through social media and decided they would come to daytona beach for sort of a big celebration of sorts because they were happy to be out. now we are back to our normal setting where most folks are practicing social distancing. the

seems like what we saw at daytona beach and the island of georgia and ocean city at maryland. massive crowds and no masks. now what happens medically? >> now we watch and wait. it really is a shame that things opened like this on memorial day weekend. it could have been an opportunity to showcase creative public health measures to encourage masks wearing and people encouraged to walk separately or sit on the beach separately. now we wait and see. part of the difficult thing of this virus is it takes a little time to spread there. there is a long presymptomatic phase and some people get very sick and require hospitalization, it takes a number of weeks. we learned about april and may and we'll learn about may in june. in the meantime we just do the best we can to improve public health messaging so we don't you know test the virus and give it so much opportunities to flo flouri flourish. >> many people are not from daytona beach, they're coming out of town. they're going back to their own community after being in a large group and no masks. how concerning is that dr. reiner? >> i

i am abo 20 minutes south of daytona beach and it's raining right now here, so not many people on thech, but yesterday there was lots of traffic, lots of people moving in crowds, getting to be on the shore here in the southeastern part of the united states. i think it shows that people seem to think that once two mohs have passed, they are able to go freely about and live their lives. however, we are still seeing local and government officials saying hold on, put on the brakes right now. we need to continue to have the social distancing measures. wear masks and be smart about this. in the southeastern portion of the united states or we have seen a lot of states and cities start to open up a -- earlier than other parts of the country, there could be a second wave in the summer or the fall. i hope we don't see the results of this, but we could see a very dire picture here a couple of weeks from now. anchor: thank you very much for that update from florida. the u.k. has anounced it will be can -- it will continue to reopen venues in june as long as progress in containing coronavirus cont

beaches this memorial day weekend. some experts are worried that the crowds will make it difficult for people to stay safe. let's talk to the mayor of dayto daytona, florida. thanks for joining us, mayor. what will folks need to do if they want to go to the beaches this weekend? >> if you're in a group of six, you're figne. we ask they stand ten feet apart from other groups. many swaths of our beach allow beach parking and driving on the beach. so we also ask that you park 25 feet from each vehicle. so those are some of the measures that we're putting in place in hopes that folks will be able to enjoy the beach and the sunshine and yet be as safe as possible. >> it's going to be a holiday weekend, as you know, and you're expecting beautiful weather where you are. what will you do if the beaches get overcrowded and people aren't able to do significant social distancing? >> well, currently all of the beach approaches are open, it's the beach full access. one of the mechanisms that can be put in place or enforced is you regulate how many people are allowed to get down on the beach by closing off the ramps. but that is not something we hope or plan t

a large crowd packed this busy street in daytona beach, florida, where a man apparently making a music video threw money from a car. as you can see, no social distancing and no masks. and in missouri, more alarming images, this time of a giant pool party. again, no visible masks and no social distancing with people packed together. another case of not following the safety advice of medical experts who warn the virus can spread among people in close proximity. >> you don't know who's infected so we really want to be clear all the time that social distancing is absolutely critical. and if you can't social distance and you're outside, you must wear a mask. >> meantime, churches in the u.s. have slowly started to reopen. days after president donald trump called them essential. and while some people attended sunday mass wearing face masks, mr. trump was seen spending the day on the golf course in virginia without a mask. well, myrtle beach, south carolina, one of many places in the u.s. where crowds gather for the holiday weekend, even as state health authorities announced that coronavirus

we have an incredible facility at daytona beach. spent $200 million on it in 2016. for the races.nowing that the seniors aren't going to get the opportunity that we all had when we graduated high school to walk across that stage, what better way to do it than at the daytona international speedway. i called our friends up and said i've got a crazy idea. we're excited that we're going to give the seniors a memorable moment. they've been robbed of this. it's a rite of passage to graduate from high school. it's going to be something really special. >> when you say you worked through the logistics, what are the logistics? driving around the speedway? >> they will all be in their own car. we have a low frequency a.m. radio at the station. everything will be broadcast through the radio in their vehicle. they will drive across the start/finish line-we've been working with our great partners here at aventura for the guidelines for handing a dmrom ma diploma through the window. the superintendent of flagler county will be doing that. they'll actually call their names out at the speedway. th
