aishah hasnie is live in new york with the story. >> hi, dana. weekend of violence here in the big apple and new york city's mayor bill de blasio says he's relying on the nypd, not federal agents after president trump warned he be sending those agents into the city to bring back law and order. back-and-forth after 51 people were shot across the state friday and including an off-duty correctional officer shot in the head. in philadelphia, four people are dead in 20 shootings there, including a terrible incident saturday where officers took fire as multiple gunmen started shooting at a large gathering. in chicago, 64 people were shot, five died over the weekend. among the injured, a 12-year-old boy and six teenagers. 19 people were shot, four killed in cincinnati on sunday, putting the city on track to have its worst year yet for homicides. dana, children keep getting caught in the cross fire. somebody shot an 8-month-old baby boy in detroit on friday and an 8-year-old girl and akron, ohio, were shot and killed on saturday during a birthday party.

aishah hasnie following it closely in new york city. ashiah, what a mess?r: you know that slowing again i love new york, you always see on the mugs and t-shirts? you might not add so much. tens of thousands of people leaving the city because of the pandemic. now we're hearing stories, people are fleeing because they don't feel safe in the city anymore and they may never come back and it has to do with crime. we saw that uptick in gun violence over the summer. shootings up 177% this july compared to last july. then we saw people doing drugs in broad daylight in midtown using needles on the sidewalks. now complaints are mounting over the city housing hundreds of homeless, drug addicts, sex offenders in three upper ses side hotels. residents say they weren't told about it. some want to stay. they want to fight back. others are getting out of dodge. >> i'm actually to looking to move out of the city of new york hopefully next year. i can't see living here under these conditions where i'm afraid to walk out and go to the store shopping for groceries. >> i'm sayi

neil: thank you very much, aishah hasnie in new york city.ernor of nebraska-- you might say, neil, why is the governor of nebraska commenting? because he's dealing with this in his state. governor, glad to have you back. you've been saying you want to see nebraska schools resume in-person classes this fall just a couple of weeks away and you've run into a buzz saw of criticism from teachers union types and others who say that you're sort of playing with their health and their safety. what do you say? >> well, i think that it's important that we have kids back in classrooms because for a lot of reasons. first of all, academic progression. we know that some kids are not going to learn well in a remote learning environment and especially you think of special needs kids, for example. and we know that kids are benefitted when they go to school in physical activities and emotional well-being, their mental health and mental well-being, also nutritional needs. so there are a lot of of reasons why we want to have kids back in school and it really is u
