i was listening to my amazing chairwoman, chairwoman beatty. look, you know, i look at this issue reverend sharpton through the eyes of a social worker, and also through the eyes of a law enforcement officer. i've served as both. my experience as a law enforcement officer tells me that no great society, no great neighborhood or community can exist without public safety, without law enforcement, but regardless of what community we're talking about, every citizen deserves to be treated with dignity and respect and so we have to look at who we hire, we have to hire the best. i used to say it to my officers and i'll say it today, we have to hire people who have the heart for the job. we wear the badge over our hearts, as a constant reminder that we have to have the heart for the job. we have to look at training. training will save lives on the police side and the community, and also we have to look at our policies. i spoke with numerous law enforcement executives and asked them to take the initiative to fix their own brokenness. but on these social

congresswoman beatty. i hope you heard our conversation. she's saying there has to be a better way. she's not in a place where she's ready to accept that was the right way. that was the only outcome to happen was to see the officer arrives on the scene and four bullets in the 16-years-old's chest. what do you think of the officer's actions? >>. >> the officer was placed in a terrible situation. i am not arguing the anger and the frustration and the pain and hurt that's going on in the community. however, i think we have to be realistic. everyone can sit there and say there has to be a better way. when the officer got there, it was immediate explosive situation in 11 seconds. there was an attack in the other girl that was pushed down and attacked with a knife. she immediately went towards the young woman up against the vehicle and the officer in my opinion had no other resources to stop that threat. tasers don't always work. it was just a terrible situation but i believe the police officer acted as he's in training and the law states it is lawful. >> the police released body camera w

questions around the andre hill shooting right there in columbus and worked through congresswoman beatty and attorney ben crump. it's not like the ohio state police department did not have issues, who the community distrusts. here was andre hill going into his car on the driveway visiting a friend. so we are dealing with people who may sound logical, but the question is to the community, are they believable? and that is the problem we're having with policing, which is, again, why i'm being redundant that we must have a standard nationally rather than going state by state, department by department. and i agree with what was said. you have 18,000 police departments. we need to have one set of guidelines, one set of rules and build the trust back in this country by doing what is, i think, the only appropriate thing to do is hold police to legal standards, and if there are criminal standards, as was done here in minneapolis. >> so, ned, let's talk about another thing the he gave. a lot of people asked this question of police. why don't you shoot to injure or to immobilize? why do you shoot t

as my friend joyce beatty said recently, we can't change our history, but we can learn from it and build a far better future that brings us closer to making our founding ideals real for everyone. fair housing took longer to pass through congress then did voting rights or desegregation of public spaces and equal opportunities for employment. these advances did not come in time to help communities of color benefit from historic investments our government made that we as a society made in the last century, beginning with the new deal, continuing through the 1960's. we tried a grand experiment in this country investing in workers and the infrastructure they needed to succeed. we built the largest middle-class the world at ever seen. but that deal remains unfinished because too many were purposefully left out. we created the federal housing administration to make the dream of phone number -- dream of homeownership and the wealth that comes with it a reality to many more families. neighborhoods were deemed good investment neighborhoods with white residents and rez -- and neighborhoods with bla
