air force aero medical laboratory in projects high dive and excelsior. e project's main objective was to study methods for returning a pilot or astronaut safely to earth by parachute if forced to eject at extremely high altitudes. for these tests, dummies were transported up to 98,000 feet by high-altitude balloons. [wind blowing] the dummies were released for a freefall period during which body movements and escape equipment performance were recorded by a variety of instruments. many of the dummies landed outside the confines of military reservations, and were regularly observed by local civilians. following a series of dummy tests, a human subject, now a retired colonel, made three bailouts from high-altitude balloons. these and other aero medical projects that used both dummies and human test subjects were unclassified, and widely publicized in the press and other media. ♪ in 1956, 20th century fox released "on the threshold of space," a feature-length motion picture based on these projects and filmed on location at holloman air force base. air force p

air force, the u.s. army air forces, did recover material near roswell in july 1947.t was recovered was not the remains of an extraterrestrial space craft and crew but debris from an army project called project mogul. begun in 1946, it was an attempt to detect soviet explosions and ballistic missiles. it was afforded the highest priority because it addressed the most important postwar national defense concern, development of an early warning system to prevent a devastaing surprise attack. they used radar reflecting targets, nylon fibers and other equipment carried aloft by a train of weather balloons extending over 600 feet. claims that the u.s. army air forces recovered a flying disc near roswell in 1947 were based primarily on a misidentification of the radar targets, a standard element of weather equipment adapted for use on the long mobile balloon train. in june 1947, the oddly constructed radar targets were found by a local rancher who later reported the equipment as a flying disc. following some initial confusion at roswell army airfield, the flying disk debris,

air force. and so these two very important figures in the development of an independent air force. are right here at the tests. another one is clayton bissell. a lot of people may not really know clayton bissell. he command a 10th air force 1942 to 43. he was one of the flight leaders one of the prominent officers involved in the tests on the army side as well if you know anything about the china burma india theater and anything about the flying tigers, they have the run-ins with clayton bissell and bissell. it's bissell's tent air force that helps support them and work with them to the best of their ability, but he's a major player in the war in asia in world war ii. sinclair street is mitchell's rear seat observer. and later as you can see commands 13th air force in the pacific 1944 to 45. after the war he is one of the key players in developing strategic air command. and it's through street that you can draw a direct line from mitchell. through him so the b-52 force that still is on duty toda

and that was the beginning of ellsworth air force base. the connection from world war ii to the cold war is really represented in our museum the 44th. bomb group was trained here at ellsworth air force base. but then when the cold war came around that bomb group then became the 44th missile wing, which was commanded out of ellsworth air force base and that missile wing is really part of the the cold war narrative when think about cold war. you of course think about the b-52s that were based here you think about the ready response of strategic air command, but she also need to think about the men and women today men and women who are in these missile capsules underneath the ground waiting for the unthinkable and that is the command turn keys and launch nuclear war our museum is an important part of telling that story. i'm kim morey. i'm currently the president of the south dakota air and space foundation where the non-profit to supports the south dakota air and space museum here outside ellsworth air force base. i spent 20 years in the air

these are american troops there waiting at the royal air force mendenhall. ling wing. the only permanent u.s. refueling wing in the european theater. and let me pick up on that thought that i just heard from gloria and bring that to you, clarissa. we now know how the president approaches this summit. how does the kremlin approach this? what do we know about how vladimir putin will be coming to this meeting with the new american president? >> reporter: well, listen, we've heard president putin talk about the new cold war. it's no secret that inside russia, the kremlin is very pessimistic about the u.s./russian relationship. they view it as being at an all-time low and they're not happy about it at all. and i think what will be really pivotal here is whether there can be any sort of common ground found during this summit. i think gloria is exactly right, that he wants to deliver the message in person, articulate the policy from his own lips and make it very clear, as well as showing this kind of show of strength, we've met with the g-7, we've met with nato, we'

the air force keeps reposing to divest. even more concerning is there isn't something that will immediately replace it. dod and the services propose we invest in one system and replace it with a system that is an unproven concept. congress made it a position -- our position clearly don't accept hope as a viable replacement. regarding the lcs, we spent over $2 billion on four ships with significant service life left that the navy is proposing to decommission in the fy 21 budget. congress reviewed the request and was very clearly opposed the decommissioning of the lcs three and four. they should be used in this outcome -- the navy is ignoring congressional intent and will propose to decommission these very same ships and fy 22 budget. they have done little to can mitigate with congress to change our position. in my opinion this is more than a budget gimmick to allow the navy to spend more money elsewhere. i agree there are systems that must be retired to make way for newer, more effective systems. dod could make these decisio
