, cultural africa. they brought that with them. when you read his narrative, you know, he talked about what their society did and didn't do with criminals, with people who should or shouldn't do things. he talked about the elders. he talked about the king would come in and handle things. that was social structure. that was jurisprudence. there were initiation rites for this and that. they had a society. they weren't just running around, you know, like something that you see on cartoons. they had harmony. they had order. they had balance in their societies, in their communities. that was upended, but it was in them. so when they were finally emancipated, they used that to build on. they drew on that traditional african cultural heritage. the traditional african world view -- you get a sense of that when kossola is talking about his daughter who died. he had one daughter, five sons. she was only 15. and he said, that's the first time death found my door. he said, but death came over with us in that ship.

he went as a devout christian to west africa. he completed that voyage, he did it again, he completed another voyage, he did it again. he completed that voyage, he was going for a fourth slaving voyage, all the while writing letters to people saying, well, i do have a godly calling now, as he was carrying people into this killing bondage, but then before that fourth voyage, he had a stroke. he was prevented from going to sea by his doctor. then, 19 years later he wrote "amazing grace," and then 13 years after that, he made his first public criticisms of the slave trade. so it didn't happen quite as the myth would have it. but i would also say that when john newton turned against the slave trade, he was a very effective witness against it because he knew what happened on those vessels. he testified before parliament that some captains used those dreadful things called thumb screws. i dare say he did know that they used them because if you read his journal of one of his voyages, he describes using thumb screws himself on children.
