pfizer. israel is having more problems than a lot of people in the used pfizer. they kind of fell down. so all of that together, yes, longer between doses -- the u.k. is doing better, that is what we should have done. kristen: i feel better, because i missed my second pfizer shot so had to wait an additional two weeks. dr. gandhi: that is fine. i put six weeks between my son'' doses and are very happy about that. kristen: one question, if you are says, "i had my booster shot wednesday. have final payment for a cruise." she has a cruise in december. she wants to know if you think it is safe? dr. gandhi: i think she should go. i think it is safe. they always test people. . they are very careful. it becomes this insular environment where they are always tested on cruises. you will see that our delta wave is looking like it is starting to come down in this country. hopefully it will happen anywhere. a lot of countries have already gone down. we do need to have some pleasure in life. kristen: now that the booster appears to be closer to reality, sergio wants to know if there are side effects

kristen: today, the pfizer booster is being given out across the country to people 65 and older, people living in long-term facilities, people with underlying adequate conditions, and people with high exposure jobs. someone who falls in that category is president biden. he got his pfizer booster very publicly today, urging eligible americans to follow suit. joining us is a ucsf infectious disease specialist. great to see you. >> thank you for having. kristen: president biden got his vaccine very publicly today. it has been about eight months for him, i think. how long should someone wait after their original series? >> i would put it into three categories. red, amber, and green. the red group should get it whenever they can. i would say that is the over 65 age group. the amber, you are above 50. the green is everybody else. you can pretty much get it anytime after six months. it is not an emergency, it is just really a good idea for that group. kristen: underlying medical conditions is a broad category. can you help people understand who that covers? >> when we think about underlying ad

the decision to authorize the pfizer vaccine for those at high risk because of medical conditions and those at high risk because of occupational and institutional risk reflected a balance of the safety and effectiveness data we have available, and the need to protect our society. it was a decision about providing rather than withholding access. i too thought of the stresses of the current moment of this pandemic and the principles of access and equity in my decision. making -- the cdc's is make bruisers available to these groups and we want to look at the data, and sure people have the choice to take advantage of a tool that maybe able to optimize their vaccine protected -- protection. as the delta variant continues to circulate and many face increased risk. this is the first step. we will continue to review new data on effectiveness and experience with the third shot as it becomes available. we suspect we are seeing what existing data for oldest people and those at severe risk will not be unique in those populations. i'm committed to updating and revising guidance in real-time and in

folks, there is a meeting of fda advisers september 17th to go over the data that pfizermitted to the fda. so it's very possible that people who took pfizer will be offered boosters, not everyone, of course, but sort of in sections and in groups, starting the week of september 20th. now, let's take a look at how many people have gotten pfizer versus moderna versus johnson & johnson. as you can see, the majority of vaccinated americans have received pfizer. that's 54%. 38% of people have received moderna. and 8% have received johnson & johnson. because there's been so much fak and forth, i want to put this in simple terms. if you've been vaccinated, it is very likely if you will be offered a booster in the coming weeks or months. might not happen the week of september 20th. but no matter what vaccine you got, it is very likely that one will be coming your way in the coming weeks or months. according to experts who i've been talking to, they think that the real damage here actually is for folks who are unvaccinated completely. these folks don't trust the government. they do

what exactly did the pfizer trial find with regard to its vaccine for a 5-11-year-olds? >> the actual data hasn't been published yet. the announcement today was letting us know the data collected and the study that finished enrollment about 10 days ago suggests the vaccine is safe, very safe and very effective in children 5-11. he didn't give specific details, but it generally hinted it was similar to the results we saw in kristen: children 12-17. we are still waiting for full data, which it has to submit to the fda. so they didn't give percentages. the date tell us about the dosage tested? >> the dose was 10 micrograms, one third of the adult dose. >> is that based on weight? or, children that age actually need less to generate the same amount, or more of immune response? >> a combination of both. pfizer did a dose finding study earlier in the summer to find the ideal dose. they tested several different dosages and this was the least amount of vaccine to get the immune response required. >> i wonder, once once once once come out and once it is finalized, do you think, wh

the pfizer vaccine without a doubt has lowered effectiveness over time. still pretty good but it goes down. wishes start with the highest risk people. we are already with immunosuppressed people. we should go to people over 60 or 65 and health-care care workers who are being exposed to people with covid. once we get all those done, we should have much better data about younger people. everybody is going to need a third shot. certainly everybody who has gotten pfizer. i'm guessing everyone with j&j will need a second shot. i would hold my horses on that. be careful. let's look at the case rates in your community. i think inevitably certainly everybody over 40 will end up getting boosters if you got pfizer. >> sean has a question. if the vaccinated or if if the vaccines work, then why is a booster needed? talk about that. is there a lifespan or is it that the virus evolves? >> it looks like two things have happened in the last several months. one is that these vaccines, we gave people two doses quickly. it was a reason for that because it was killing a whole
