grady? >> mike, a shortage of workers at their shipping ports causing the backlog.log of goods right now is the high consumer demand. it's also because there are not enough people doing with what maria here is doing, driving trucks. she works for a company called cm k trucking, and they could hire right around 200 drivers right now and have plenty of work for them across the industry though, look at the shortage numbers. the projected shortage of some 160,000 truck drivers by 2028. i talked about that massive consumer demand. people have been topping at holiday like levels throughout much of the pandemic and there are no signs of that stopping. >> for the last ten months, we have seen it just continued to peek. we don't see it dissipating. until demand slows down, all the warehouses and all the facilities and ports are going to continue to be very congested. >> trucking companies are doing everything they can to recruit new hires. some of the drivers for cm k are making twice what they made before the pandemic. other companies are offering new hires sign on bonuses

a grady trimble is with us from chicago.g unvaccinated employees and if so how will that affect holiday travel? >> a united is and the firings are underway as we speak. they say they aren't expecting any operational problems as a result of these firings, but there are warnings and concerns with some of the other airlines. we have an update from united. at the number of employees losing their jobs because they refused to get vaccinated or didn't seek an exemption has decreased over the past couple of days, but still about 320 people are being shown the door, about half the original 593 have a sense of loaded. as of this minute united is the only major airline that's requiring employees to get vaccinated him about the pilots union for southwest and american are pushing back against the presidents vaccine mandate saying pilots should be able to choose whether or not they want to get vaccinated and they also warn about major operational challenges as a result of the vaccine mandate just ahead of the holiday appeared in a letter

grady trimble is at southwest airlines's hub in chicago. how many flights are they cutting?o avoid another blunder like we saw earlier this month with that cancellation chaos, 2000 flights canceled over appear go of a few days. as you said that was blamed on the weather plus staffing shortages they are dealing with and southwest is not the only airline dealing with the staffing challenges right now. southwest is on its way to hiring 5000 employees by the end of this year. they are halfway to that goal but delta looking to add 1500 flight attendants as well. american wants to add 350 pilots by the end of this year, 1000 new pilots over the course of 2022. the other issue airlines are dealing with right now is the vaccine mandate because they are federal contractors. the pilots union for southwest and american pilots sent letters to their members telling them not to talk about it on the job because it is becoming a safety issue. this is a letter from the american pilots union, the latest hazard we face may be the hardest regardless of your personal views concerning the vaccine
