yamiche alcindor, biden's meeting with the democrats. the price of this bill is coming down and remind the good folks watching that that won't be greeted as good news by all the democrats. >> that is right, the president today spent a lot of time meeting with members in his own party to try and scramble together to really reunite his party, so he could get these infrastructure plans through. he met with house progressives, as well as house moderates, he also met with senator sinema, and senator manchin. what came out of this is he's been talking to white house sources. he put an actual top five number, 1.9, to 2.2, around 2.2 trillion dollars. and that is about a trillion dollars less than what progressives were going for which is about 3.5 trillion dollars. that's what house progressives are saying when i was talking to them at the white house when i was talking to the president. they sounded optimistic. they sounded like they really wanted to get behind the strategy of the president that he was doing. he was calling him the mediator in

for more, i'm joined by yamiche alcindor. so yamiche, we shedder today from the president and the senate majority leader mitch mcconnell, wre does everything stand? >> well both sides are dug in as debt ceiling, it is unclear which side will blink. president biden took to the white houspodium today and he delivered pointed remarks. he accused republicans of playing quote russian roulette with the u.s. economy. he said that the debt seang is not about new spending. he said this is about whether or not the u.s. will be able to pay its bills. here is some of what the president had to say. >> not only are republicans ksh-- their job, they are threatening to use their power to prevent us from doing our job, saving the economy from a catastrophic event. i think quite frankly it is hypocritical, dangerous and disgraceful. >> now president biden also said that it is wrong for republicans to link the debt ceiling limit and raising the debt limiwith his infrastructure plan though the gop has said if democrats can pass the infrastructure

joining me now, nbc's kerry sanders and pbs's yamiche alcindor. kerry, what do we know about the latest on these ransom negotiations? >> the fbi has agents now on the ground in haiti attempting to make contact with the mawozo gang here. the 400 mawozo gang, which is claiming responsibility for taking the 17 hostages. their demands we understand right now, and this is "wall street journal" reporting with the justice minister in haiti, is for, as you noted, $17 million. we have a breakdown of who these 16 americans and one canadian is. it includes five children, one as young as 8 months old, 3 years old, 6 years old, 14 years old, and 15 years old. there is a background here to understand that gangs in haiti have attempted and have been successful at extorting money in hostage situations like this before. just in april, five priests, two nuns, and two relatives were released after a ransom was paid. the challenge, of course, here is, does the united states negotiate with what essentially are terrorists. there's a long history of the united states no

yamiche alcindor has oureport. miche: for the first time since he resigned as special envoy for haiti last month, daniel foote spoke publicly, briefing the house foreign affairs committee. foote, who left his position amid mass deportations of haitian migrants on the southern border, told lawmakers it is wrong to send haitians back to the struggling island nation. >> deportation in the short term is not going to make haiti more stable. in fact, it's going to make it worse. nobody asked me about the deportations. i found out about it on the news, just like the rest of us. yamiche: in mid-september, more than 14,000 haitians, many from south america, came to the u.s. southern border seeking asylum. many ended up in squalid conditions, camping under a bridge in del rio, texas. as many as 12,000 haitians were released into the united states to await immigration proceedings. but thousands of others were sent back to haiti. meanwhile, beyond covid-19, the island nation is still reeling from a major earthquake in august. a
