joining us now, nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli. mike, always great to see you. undeniably a big day for democrats. walk us through it. we heard the president say how transformative this will be. when will the government, cities, states, and americans start to see tangible results of this legislation? >> well, one thing that's important to remember, jon, is that unlike the recovery act, which then vice president biden helped to oversee, this is not designed to be a stimulus bill it. ooh is a long-term spending bill. so while there will be some benefits that will be more immediately seen than others, especially as it relates to broadband access and replacing lead pipes. they may not be shovel-ready ones but shovel-worthy as the white house is using. what you saw yesterday was a president and a party that has spent an awful lot of its political capital well trying to begin to get that back, and i thought it was interesting to hear some of the historical sweep in the speeches from speaker pelosi and vice president harris, for instance, going back through history to

let's go go on over to nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli. e to go down while support for his policies are going up? >> yes, though there's a real disconnect in these numbers when you look at support for the presidents economic agenda, but then a low rating for his handling of the economy. specifically, his overall approval rating at 41%. but 39% saying they disapprove of his handling -- only 39% i should say -- approve of his handling of the economy. 70% of americans in the survey also saying they would rate the economy as negatively. most concerning for democrats, if you pull the generic ballot in the congressional elections next year, the midterms in 2022, 46% of voters say they would pick a republican republican candidate for congress. only 43% say they would choose the democratic candidate. this is why the president is going to be hitting the road after he signs the bill here at the white house tomorrow. trying to really get those numbers back up. we've got a preview of his message on friday, when he held his cabinet meeting. you talked a

joining me from the white house my nbc news colleague mike memoli. n the strategic petroleum reserve and how much is about looking like you're trying to control gas prices versus able to provide real relief on the short hand? >> reporter: exactly the right question. certainly a short-term political aspect but a broader geopolitical aspect of the white house decision here. short term is they're going back to sort of the playbook they employed in the early days of this administration, borrowing the fda mantra action and action now 378 want to be caught trying to do anything so that this public perception of this white house as maybe not doing enough to tackle inflation, economic concerns americans are dealing with are sort of put to rest, and interesting in the white house's press release this morning when they announced this move, they actually claimed that the, simply the discussion that had leaked early that they were considering this option working in concert with some of our allies and other major energy consumers in the world is responsible for a

nbc's mike memoli is with us this morning. good morning to you.the midst of the inflation? >> reporter: it's so interesting, kendis, because the signing of the president's bipartisan infrastructure bill should really be a cause for great celebration, and there will be a celebration at the white house on monday when the president signs it. you can really sense the enthusiasm has been tempered by the real political pressure points. have the supply chain challenge that has a lot of people concerned about the holiday gift giving. you saw on wednesday when the president first went out to hit the road to promote the bipartisan plan, he went not to a bridge project, he didn't go to a rail project. he went to the port of baltimore to talk about how the infrastructure bill would help deal with that supply chain issue, and yesterday when the president convened his third cabinet meeting in office to talk about the implementation of the infrastructure plan, he was very blunt about the concern of inflation as well. let's take a listen to what he had to say. >>

belief of the biden administration on a number of fronts and continues to be the case here. >> mike memoli in minnesota for us, mike, thank you. let me bring in dr. shah and dr. emmanuel. zeke, you've been advising private companies and trying to convince hem to abide by the vaccine mandate, sort of adopt the guidelines that the administration is trying to push. do you think there needs to be a more robust public defense of these mandates? >> well, i think it is the case, you heard rochelle walensky state the very good case, which is you want to protect yourself, you want to protect your family, you want to protect the community and minimize their risks of hospitalization and death? vaccines are the way to go. and none of us -- you know, we don't know about omicron. we don't know where it's going to go. is it going to transmit faster and be really mild, which is a good thing, or is it going to transmit faster and be worse and more virulent, which would obviously be a bad thing. in any of those scenarios, you want to be fully vaccinated confronting it. and it seems to me that is the right m

let's go to mike memoli in wilmington, delaware. what are we hearing, mike, from the white house, as bbb is entering this next phase in the senate? >> it's really been a long, legislative grind for this white house. first to get the infrastructure bill passed. the president, of course, just signing that into law last monday. and now with the build back better act, now passed the house, it's sort of like the seventh inning stretch. there's a little bit of a break this week. the president, he'll be taking off from here in wilmington, back to washington. just this hour, in fact, now, the senate isn't in session, so we don't expect to have too much in the way of in-person meetings with senators to try to resolve the many, many outstanding issues that julie just laid out. but you can expect that top white house officials and the president himself are remaining in touch by phone with some of the key lawmakers, especially senator joe manchin. it's really clear, with all the issues, that the biggest political headwind that this administratio

joining us now nbc's mike memoli at the white house and stephanie stanton in st. petersburg, florida. president biden is trying to reassure americans that the half a trillion dollar infrastructure bill he's signing into law on monday will help ease inflation. mike memoli is at the white house for us, inflation concerns are raising alarms for americans, but what's the president's plan to combat that? >> yeah, alex, this pocketbook issue for millions of americans is really becoming a political issue for this white house. you look at the president's job approval rating in august when the senate passed the bipartisan infrastructure plan. it was over 50%. when the house passed it just last week, he's now hovering at or below 40%, and so that's why you've seen something of a rhetorical shift from the white house. earlier this year in response to republican criticism, but even some friendly fire, they were down playing concerns over inflation calling it transitory, temporary, now they're acknowleding the pain americans are feeling and they're saying what the president ha

i want to bring in mike memoli live in detroit ahead of the president. and leigh ann caldwell joins me from capitol hill where democrats are still grappling with the other huge part of the president's agenda. take us through what we're expecting to hear from president biden in motor city today. >> reporter: well, craig, when president biden was candidate joe biden, one of the first policy proposals he put out was about installing 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations across the country. he argued at the time this was both a climate policy by helping to reduce fossil fuel emissions but also a jab creator. when biden was the vice president he worked closely with auto manufacturers, with the city of detroit to help revive, get the auto industry off its feet. he's coming here on a big day for gm. as you mentioned, to tout the fact that this infrastructure will help, indeed, not get to the 500,000, but a good stride in that direction. and it's going to be a part of what gm is proposing today to help transition their fleet to all electric vehicles by 2035

first, we bring in julie tsirkin on capitol hill, and mike memoli. first to capitol hill, that's where the magic still has to happen to get the build back better act through the senate, julie. are democrats hoping holiday cheer perhaps is inspire support from their dissenting senate colleagues? >> i hate to sound like a grinch here, but you played that clip at the top sounding really optimistic that this bill will remain intact. but i can't see a world in which the bill that president biden signs isn't dramatically different than the bill that the house just passed on friday and that's because you have 50 senate democrats with very different priorities coming from very different parts of this country, and some of them who want this bill passed across the finish line soon think this is their last shot at the pie here. because they think or they fear they may lose control of washington come midterms, so this is really important for them. but look, you have some issues in this bill that don't just range from senator manchin and sinema. senator bernie sa

mike memoli is following this for us. you got some allies expressing surprise at the president's assurances and others not surprised at all. nonetheless seeing this in "the washington post" i think surprising to all, of course for someone within the first year of the presidency. walk us through what we know. >> reporter: i got to say as somebody that lived through and reporting on the will he or won't he about a biden campaign in 2016 when the answer is no and then again for 2020 when the answer was ultimately yes, it does feel early to be engaged already in the conversation whether the president will seek re-election. we know the reasons why. the first is what biden talked about in 2020 describing himself as a transitional figure and a bridge to the next generation of democrats. sounded to people that he was thinking ant being a one-term president and then the age. the president's birthday yesterday, turned 79. he would be 82 in 2024 asking for four more years in the white house and people think this is not a decision he

. >> mike memoli and julie tsirkin, thank you so much. >>> for more on this, let's bring in our politicalssman who ran for the 2020 presidential nomination. good morning to both of you. so, emily, how big is this for democrats? we heard julie talking about some of the sticking points. what do you think is going to stay, and what do you think is going to have to go? >> this is huge for democrats. so much support the democrats got. they wanted to see something -- they wanted to see effectiveness. they wanted to see democrats pass something that will help regular people, and that is a ton of what's in the build back better plan. it's paid leave, child care, home care visits. it's things that real people need to get back on track, and they feel they're going to do better. this is huge. we heard from speaker pelosi. she said 90%. i guess probably pretty close between what the house passed and what the senate is going to consider. so we really are on traffic. democrats need to show it on the board. they have to show they can pass something and it will be big. i think what we're going to see is

joining me now to discuss all of this is nbc white house news correspondent mike memoli. a gas station where prices are rising in new york, and correspondent ben white. mike, clearly the president is trying to get out ahead of all the rises in prices that we're seeing, the inflation, the economy not on the track that americans want it, part of the reason why his poll numbers are sinking so precipitously low. how does the white house feel that they are going to be able to do in order to try to right this ship? >> reporter: katy, i thought the most telling word the president used was perspective. the white house feels there has been a real mismatch between the data generally and the u.s. recovering more quickly since the pandemic hit than any other major economy in the world. but some of the real economic challenges that are dragging, as you laid out, the president's approval rating. covid is still very much a concern. the president tried to make clear that some of the disruption, some of the supply chain challenges, are still a result of covid. but you also see the presiden

. >> nbc news reporter julie tsirkin is on capitol hill for us and white house correspondent mike memolisident on this birthday weekend. you le, we know the senate will likely send a bill that looks a lot different than this one. how confident are house democrats that they'll be able to agree with the senate's version and the final one? >> well, it depends on what it looks like, right, senate democrats are going to have to make significant changes to this bill, both in terms of adding provisions to the bill, and taking some away. and that's because there's currently disagreements amongst some key senators, of core senators joe manchin, senator sinema and a progressive leader in the senate bernie sanders who wants medicaid expansion in that bill. there's only money for hearing aids. he wants vision and dental back in and that, of course, will tick up the price of the bill. the cbo, we're sticking to sports terms, the nonpartisan scorekeeper of this whole process, they said this bill already adds over $360 billion to the deficit. that's a big concern for senator joe manchin and other moder

mike memoli, we'll start with you at the people's house. do we know when president biden is going to formally sign this infrastructure bill yet? >> well, you were just showing the pictures a moment ago of the president returning to the white house this morning. he spent the weekend out in his beach home in delaware. one of the questions we shouted at him was about when the bill signing would be. he did not respond. here's the thing, we know this president cannot wait to sign that massive bipartisan infrastructure bill, but we also know that this white house wants to celebrate this moment. and there's really no one to celebrate with at the moment with congress out of town for the week. and so it's really looking like we're going to see that next week when the president can invite both democrats and republicans to the white house to give it the kind of push and the momentum that they want to carry moving forward. that's why you're also going to see the president this week beginning to spotlight some of what's included. he's going to be headin

i want to bring in capitol hill correspondent, lee ann caldwell, mike memoli, and jake sherman. there's a lot of much-needed very popular things in this bill. hard to argue we don't need it. is there confusion, though, about what's in it? because i keep hearing people talk about socialism and welfare. if you want to go after this bill, go for. it but it seems silly to call welfare a socialism on roads and bridges. this is our crumbling infrastructure. >> yeah, steph. there might not be many clearer examples than this one of where biden's experience as vice president is really shaping the president's approach moving forward at this stage. remember, what was one of vice president biden's first big assignments from president obama. it was overseeing the implementation of the stimulus bill that they passed in 2009. a lot of roads and bridges and other projects, as well. but then vice president told me at the time, and he said often since, he doesn't think they did enough of a job promoting what was in the plan after they passed it. and it created this vacuum that really let the tea
