kate >> hey, kelly. bitcoin's performance, and especially good for some of the smaller cryptocurrencies let's start with bitcoin though. it is up about 60% since january. it kicked off this year around $30,000. today it is closer to $46,000 with some wild swings in between. the high was near $67,000 back in november. bitcoin did lose its grip on market share as well this year it dropped from roughly 70% of the total crypto market to closer to 40% more recently. this happened as more money flowed into coins like ether, the second largest cryptocurrency, and a boom in nfts with more developer activity in some of the coins. we had speculative names like dogecoin ether is up more than 40%. like solano, for example, take a look, that one is out more than 11,000% so far this year the total cryptocurrency market cap. that includes the thousands of other coins out there in addition to bitcoin tripled to $1.5 trillion in value at one point in the year it was closer to $3 trillion. for individual investors, kelly,

>> hey, kelly. well, the cdc just took a look at 43 of the first cases of this variant in the united states, putting together some of the characteristics that are emerging now, although it is still early days what they found is that 34 of those 43 folks, or almost 80%, were fully vaccinated. of those, 14 were boosted. six people who are infected had prior infections with covid. now, the most common symptoms among these folks were cough, fatigue and congestion or runny nose now, only one of these people was hospitalized and just for two days no deaths have been reported to date from people who have had omicron. the cdc cautioning even if most infections are mild, a highly transmissable variant could result in enough cases to overwhelm health care systems. some data shows us from the uk shows how quickly it can spread. even though it looks pretty mild and it does look like protection is provided by vaccination against severe disease, this is still a pretty concerning-looking variant at this point. >>

i'm kelly evans. ahead this hour, an ugly ppi report has stocks in the red today.he nasdaq is slumping 2% when we look behind dom, still down about 300 points, all as the fed kicked off a big two-day meeting. will they look at inflation numbers and taper faster my next guest says it could stay ugly for a while and he has four name to ride it out. what is going on with media stock? they've been crushed today we will see what is driving the losses and who is best positioned to turn them around big calls in rapid fire today, disney, apple, chipotle and more the story and the trades ahead this hour. >>> let's get the specifics. dom kchu here to do the numbers >> the specifics are as you pointed out. you are seeing on a relative basis this flip side trade is it a rotation, is it not. >> reporter: the nasdaq composite, 15,113, down 300 points, down 2%. you juxtapose that to the dow industrials, down about 200 points which is only .5 of a percent. if you look between these two indices, the s&p 500, 4,608, down about 1.25% 60 handles to the downside to put a little context

now, kelly's ford can be seen as this transition for pelham. it's where life and memory begin to intersect. he is a bit of a legend in his own lifetime. we're going to talk about that in a few minutes. but when he dies, life ends, memory begins, and do they always match up? we're going to explore that in the next few minutes. so i would like to start off with a premise for today's discussion. and that is that a person's life and the story written about them after their death may not match. and there's a few questions that i would like you to keep in mind as we're going through the presentation. what are the primary source facts during a life? so what's written about a person while they're alive? what do they write? what do we see in their own writings as well? number two, how did this person view themselves, and again, that's going to tie back into the primary sources. and number three, are there motives for a different narrative to emerge after their death? so keeping these things in mind, let's jump in to life versus legend with john pelham.
