joining me again here is shimon prokupecz. s now but in the last few hours as police were mounting a significant search in that detroit area. and shimon, if um, just bring us right up to date with what's going on right now. as you understand it, police do have the parents in custody now, right? >> reporter: they have the parents in custody. they were apprehended a short time ago after a car was discovered, the car that police had been searching for was discovered on detroit -- in detroit's east side. about 40 minutes or so from oakland, where we've been the last few days. the car was discovered by someone in the neighborhood near an industrial building. and they were seen, the parents, these fugitives were seen walking away from the car and into a building. the police descended on this area, heavily armed officers. some of them are still here. and also federal officials, u.s. marshals, and police officers from all around this area came to this location. they searched the building and w we're told they were found on the first fl

let's bring in now cnn's shimon prokupecz and cnn's national security analyst juliette kayyem. you listened to what we heard from the sheriff there. what stood out to you? >> what stood out to me is a student who has never seems to have been disciplined or complained about bullying, doesn't seem to have been anyone's focus, his father buys a gun over thanksgiving weekend. by monday, the kid has some incident that brings him to a principal or some guidance counselor. tuesday there's a second incident and now the kid's parents are in there and he has the gun on campus. that's how truncated this is at this stage. a five-day period over thanksgiving with no hints or clues. so the only variable is, he had access to a gun because it doesn't seem like this was a long-term thing. at least what we know now. that stood out to me that this is just a -- an odd situation in terms of -- >> juliette, sorry to interrupt and shimon, stand by. the arraignment of this suspect is beginning. >> if you could state your full name and spell it for our court reporter. >> lieutenant tim willis. willis,

let's get straight live to shimon prokupecz.bout these meetings that the teachers, two separate steechers, one the day before the shooting and one the morning of the shooting, separate teachers raising issues over some of what the alleged shooter was doing, some of the things he was saying, and behavior concern. here's the sheriff talking about that this morning. >> on the day prior to the tragedy, a teacher in the classroom where he was a student saw and heard something that she felt was disturbing in terms of his behavior. the day of the shooting, a different teacher in a different classroom saw some behavior that they felt was concerning. and they brought the child down to an officings had a meeting with school officials, called in the parents, and ultimately it was determined that he could go back into class. >> reporter: and, john, this is raising a lot of questions certainly for people living in this community, wondering why law enforcement was never brought in to this concern, perhaps raising the idea that the school knew

shimon prokupecz live in michigan. they did uncover some writings from the alleged shooter. what do we know about what they found? >> reporter: so the sheriff just revealing that this morning on "new day." saying that they did find writings, while they were executing a search warrant at his home. and basically just describing it as something that contains the alleged shooter's thoughts. they're hoping that it takes them to a path where they can learn the motive. right now authorities are not speculating on motive, not giving anything as they're still trying to figure that out. the sheriff also revealing a lot of other new details, certainly that they have now evidence that some 30 shots were fired. they recovered 30 rounds, he said. also very chilling he described seeing video that shows the alleged shooter going through the building, describing it as at close range -- at close range, saying that he came out with intent to kill and calling it a cold-hearted murderous spree, essentially. so there is still a lot for authorities to learn. more and more details are starting to c

shimon prokupecz is at a city-run testing facility in times square. shimon, we've talked with you this week and see the lines. is anything easing up a little bit, particularly as centers like that one you're at get set up? >> reporter: i'm going to show you, jim, where we are in times square. this is a city-run site. i would's really not. some of these people have been in line for about two hours, over two hours in some cases, and it's cold here today. so, you can imagine they're getting creative with hand and feet warmers. the line stretches north to about -- this is 48th street, and then it wraps around the corner. like i said, people have been standing here for well over two hours. it's been open since about 9:00 a.m. so the lines are still going. as you said, the state is seeing a high level, a staggering number of cases, 29,000, half of those, more than half of those here in new york city. so what the city is doing obviously is they're opening more sites. the other thing they're doing is at-home test kits. they are available. i walked into this te

thank you, shimon prokupecz. let's discuss now with former fbi special agent and lecturer at yale university and andrew mckay, former deputy director of the fbi. andrew, first your reaction to these charges against the parents, four counts each of involuntary manslaughter? >> well, ana, i was stunned when i heard that they were leaning in that direction because it's so exceedingly rare. in the few states that have laws that address this sort of thing, really no one ever gets prosecuted. listening to the details that came out in the press conference, just absolutely stunning. the prosecutor has a litly a mountain of evidence upon which to proceed with these very serious charges of essentially criminally reckless homicide. probably what we heard in the press conference is just a sample of what they have so far. who knows what will come out when witnesses start testifying at an upcoming trial, if there is one. it's incredible and it's absolutely called for, an i think it maybe is just the sort of thing we need to at

let's begin with shimon prokupecz on the ground in new york city. this positivity rate in new york, this is remarkable. >> reporter: remarkable, doubling in just three days, jim. it is causing a lot of anxiety in the city. i'm at a testing site here on 57th street. the line is about 100 people deep or so. this is about a two-hour wait just to get tested. lines we haven't really seen in probably several months, maybe even a year or so. but all these people have been waiting here now, for a couple of hours, waiting to get tested, just to go inside. many of them, that i've talked to, said they were exposed, whether in the office or they were in meetings in offices, some are traveling, some want to get together with family. so they are getting tested. but testing is a premium right now all across the city with lines like this. and what is driving this is as you said, the doubling of these numbers. we went from 3.9%, the officials say, to 7.3 in just days. this is has city officials concerned. they're concerned because of the unvaccinated. they're seeing

. >> cnn's shimon prokupecz is live from oxford, michigan. this is shocking, shimon. it seems there were quite explicit warning signs, more than one, prior to the shooting. and yet the student was allowed back into school and somehow managed to get a weapon from his father. how did this happen? >> reporter: and this new information, jim, is hugely significant, certainly for investigators. the fact that there were meetings, the morning of, the parents were here, we're told there were concerns about this individual and the fact that he was allowed back into school, back into class, hugely significant. prosecutors tell us, they said yesterday, they have all sorts of information. when you look at the timeline here, right, that monday, monday there was concern over behavior and things that a teacher was seeing. then tuesday morning, hours before the shooting, there are concerns from a teacher. the parents are brought into school. something happens. the parents are told something. and then it seems nothing was done. and then, of course, the horrific attack happens, occurs a

cnn's shimon prokupecz joins us now from new york's la guardia airport. which can be frustrating, even without a pandemic, you know, going on. shimon, what's the latest on your end? >> reporter: yeah, so la guardia, this is late. so as you can see behind me, there is not much activity. there is about half the tlfligh that are taking off from terminal b here that are delayed. couple hours here and there. so we have seen passengers arrive late. we have seen crew arrive just a short time ago as the airlines try to move crews around, try to move people around to get some of these flights that have been delayed or cancelled back up in the air so they can get passengers home. across the u.s., 1,300 flights were cancelled and already tomorrow, we're -- we're seeing over 200 u.s. flights being cancelled according to flight aware. so, there is still obviously more cancellations to come even after today, jim. >> and is there any indication of how many more days we are going to see these massive cancellations? i suppose, these new cdc guidelines may provide some reli

shimon prokupecz is in new york following the story.t this and also how parents should receive this. >> reporter: right. likely -- it is likely if you have a child in school today, you've received a letter or an email from the school warning you of this threat. but they're saying that it's vague, that there's no -- it's not credible. the baltimore school district tweeting saying that the police there have investigated the threat and it originated out of arizona. but nonetheless, of course, there is a lot of concern. this was a threat, a viral threat that started on tiktok. and what the new york city board of education is saying is that basically was call-in bomb threats and school shooting threats. others say people have actually threatened school shootings. that is causing a lot of the concern across the country. as you said, some schools have closed from california to texas, obviously baltimore, and all schools all across the country now on alert. they've stepped up security as you said. they've banned backpacks in some schools. keep

shimon prokupecz is in oxford, michigan. the prosecutor said she was considering charges for the parents of the suspect. any movement on that today? >> reporter: no. so far, no movement on that, victor. we are waiting to hear from officials on that. they seem to indicate that they are going to move forward, at least yesterday, they did with charging the parents. we have not seen the parents. we have been by the house. so it's really no movement on that. of course, the big question, why the prosecutors are raising this idea that they're going to charge the parents is because of the gun. the gun was purchased four days before this shooting, and it's questions about whether or not the parents did enough to keep the gun out of the alleged shooter's hands, and that is what something that investigators here and prosecutors are now focused on. >> shimon, what about the -- his cell phone? were there videos recorded on his cell phone? >> reporter: yeah. there were -- that was revealed yesterday as well. some of it at his arraignment,

cnn's shimon prokupecz joins us live from oxford, michigan. prosecutors believe that the shooting could have been prevented. does that mean the possibility of charges against the parents and for what exactly? >> reporter: right. and that we will know at noon today. the prosecutors saying that they will have a press conference to update the investigation. but also a decision will be made and announced at that point about whether or not they're going to charge the parents. that's a good question in terms of what charges could they face. investigator here believe at this point the parents likely purchased this weapon for their son, right, we heard the sheriff come out and say that the gun was purchased by the father, four days before the attack. so that is a key significant piece of evidence. there are instagram photos of the alleged shooter saying this is my gun. that investigators believe it is the gun that was used in this shooting, so they have a lot of information they're working on. that's why they believe perhaps that the father bought thi

cnn's shimon prokupecz, he's at a pop-up testing site in new york. the good thing here is people want to know their status. they want to be able to protect themselves and the people around them. more people want those tests than there is availability. how is the city responding to that? >> reporter: hundreds of thousands of people here in new york and new york city demanding -- the demand for testing is so high, so they're going to try to increase the number of city-run sites. it's sites like this all across manhattan and new york city where private businesses, private labs have opened up these kinds of pop-up locations where people can come and get tested, rapid tests and pcr tests. people have been lining up pretty steadily coming through. there's a good system here getting tested and leaving. the positivity rate certainly concerning for new york city. it's over 11%. the latest numbers show some 14,000 people just here in new york city have tested positive, slightly down from 15,000 the day before. despite all this, jim, the mayor today really soun

cnn's shimon prokupecz is outside one of those testing sites. i've driven by lines like this for the last couple of days. they've really been doubling, shimon. >> reporter: yeah, they have, and people standing for hours, right? kind of reminds us of when we were out on the streets in the beginning of this and through the months and really the year of this pandemic, and now to see lines like this again, it just shows you the anxiety that people are having because of the numbers. the increase in the number of positive cases, and also people back in offices, back out living their lives are now being exposed yet again to people who are testing positive. so all of this concern is now bringing people to places like this where they're waiting, standing in line for hours to get tested. so let's look at some of those numbers. when you look at the numbers here in new york city, it's alarming for the city officials. they're saying that in just the last few days, in just three days they saw a doubling of numbers. they went from 3.9% to now over 7%, and then

our crime and skrus tis reporter shimon prokupecz in the room. look, fact number one is that ethan crumbley is the accused shooter. fact number two, his parents have been charged in a groundbreaking case, four counts of involuntary manslaughter. you raised another important question there at the press conference about what about the school? how in the world was this young man allowed to go back into class on the day before the shooting he was searching for ammunition, on the day of the shooting another teacher saw the drawings, his parents summoned to the school and when they recklessly and irresponsibly said we want to leave him here, the school somehow let that stand. you asked that question about the anger in the community? >> there is anger over this. my producer and i have been here all week and talked to law enforcement officials, sheriff offices who ran too school, saw the blooded bodies and victims. as they started learning what the school knew, we had some information about it and the sources on the ground we've been talking to have been

shimon prokupecz live in new york city. imon, we have seen lines there not long after this time of the morning. what are you seeing? >> reporter: it's early, john, plus it's raining. that could be playing into what's going o. some of the locations putting people on waiting lists trying to keep people out of lines, keep them out of being together. perhaps that's what's going to here. yesterday's numbers indicate the city is still seeing a large amount of positive cases. 14,000 people testing positive just in new york city, putting the positivity rate over 10%. now, that is lower than the day before of 15,000. but certainly indications that this is not slowing down here in new york city. testing has gone down to about 23%. the mayor yesterday saying despite all this, they still need more testing, more sites. and he wants the federal government to help. take a listen to what the mayor said. >> i want to see obviously that supply expand quickly, and i urge the president to use the defense production act to the absolute maximum.

cnn's shimon prokupecz is live in new york city with more on this. what are you seeing this morning? >> reporter: we're at this location where it's almost like a bazaar of covid tests, three different labs, three different companies that have set up shop on 42nd street just outside of bryant park. this is kind of what we're seeing all across the city, these pop-up sites, private labs that are opening and servicing people and con opportunitying pcr tests and rapid tests. other places, some of the other private owned businesses have shut their doors today to help deal with the staffing. the mayor saying they're opening up over 100 sites, mobile sites, new sites where people can come for testing because the demand is so high. over 14,000 people have tested positive in the latest numbers, down a little bit from 15,000. but nonetheless, because the demand is so high, they need to open more sites. the mayor saying they're going to go ahead and do that. despite all that, the mayor with a positive tone today, sighing people really need to stay safe, but they

cnn's shimon prokupecz live for us in times square.ow big will it be and what kind of restrictions will they take to keep it safe? >> reporter: certainly not as big as prior years. certainly bigger than last year where only front line workers were allowed to come here. the city is only allowing 15,000 people in each viewing area. normally they allow close to 60,000, about 58,000 or so people into these viewing areas. they're scaling that back because of the spread of the omicron virus. what they are doing is saying, okay, we're going to allow people to come here much later in the day, starting at 3:00 on new year's eve, and we're going to put about 15,000 people in each viewing area. you're also going to be required to wear a mask. and you're going to be required to be vaccinated. they're going to have police officers at checkpoints, checking everything, checking people in. so the party is going to go on. it's just going to be much smaller. this was going to be a big event for the city, for new york city. and the mayor wanted it to go

jeremy diamond is at the white house, shimon prokupecz is at a pop-up testing site in new york. first, to the white house, jeremy. so, this testing relief, half a billion tests, how soon can folks like you and me ask for these and have them sent to our homes? >> well, listen, i was on a call with senior administration officials yesterday and they said that this site will come online sometime in january. and the first tranche of those 500 million rapid tests will also go out next month. that will not be of any comfort to americans who are struggling to find tests right now. and that was something that the president addressed yesterday as well. making clear that he acknowledged that there is not enough testing in this country, but he believes the 500 million tests will help. he did get a little bit defensive when asked about whether or not this was a failure, insisting it was not, and claiming that nobody could have predicted how quickly this omicron variant has been spreading. the 500 million tests was one of several measures that president biden announced yesterday. he also talk

let's go to our colleague, shimon prokupecz, he joins us in new york. shimon, across from our home every day the lines around the block, around the full block, and it gets longer by the day. >> reporter: it does, and what's going on really across the city now, poppy, as you have been going out, you see these independent kind of privately owned labs setting up shop, just tents, that they have set up and they are really the ones that are doing, at least it would seem, a lot of the testing across the city. certainly in parts of manhattan, which are seeing a surge, surge, surge in cases, and so people lining up at sites like this where they're testing, walking up. these are set up for tourists, people coming to the country overseas to get back on a flight. what has happened is a lot of locals are using them for their tests because other places are just inundated and can't take the capacity. a stunning number, i want to share something from the governor in new york state. close to 30,000 new cases, 28,900 across the state. a majority of them here in new york

shimon prokupecz is joining us with more. so what happens today?eally just the next step in the process. but what is really significant, we'll first see a new lawyer, a new lawyer appointed by the court for the alleged shooter, paulette lifton. and we could see some indications where she'll go with the defense. one thing that will be interesting to see, whether or not she asks the court to order a psych exam, a mental competency exam of the alleged shooter, that has not been done yet. if that was to be the case, that would delay next week's preliminary hearing which would be more significant because that is when we start getting into evidence and there would be more information that would be revealed. so it is expected that she will come in and we'll see how things start to go. we'll get some indication perhaps how the defense plans to pursue their defense of the alleged shooter. of course he is charged as an adult with the shooting and killing of four individuals and then of course the terrorism charge which prosecutors have said he is charged for

shimon prokupecz joins us in times square. the governor just announced new guidance in terms of isolation for some workers. what do we know? >> essential workers, there's certainly a lot of concern that essential workers are going to get hit by the virus, and knocked out. some of the much needed work they do across the city and the state is going to be affected. what the governor has done is that she has changed the guidelines, and what she's saying is that after five days, you know, normally it's ten days, right, she's saying after five days if you show no symptoms, have not had any fevers for 72 hours, and you're asymptomatic, you can leave. you can leave isolation. that is significant because there's a lot of concern obviously for the transit workers, for the police officers, the firefighters, emt emts, those front line workers we have been talking about for well over a year, they're going to get knocked out by this, and services are going to be lacking. she's changing the guidelines of that. this, of course, as we know abo

shimon prokupecz is live in new york where, as you can see, people are already lining up to get testedrning. shimon. >> reporter: yeah, kaitlan. and people have been online since 5:00 a.m. the testing site behind me opens at 7:00 a.m. but i want to show you the line here. it continuously has been growing. they are positioning some of the people here to stand this way on the other side. probably about 100 or so people on this line already this morning. and they're not even open. this is just -- underscores the anxiety across the city, as you said, seeing this rate double in three days. when you look at the numbers, the city putting out some numbers yesterday saying that on december 9th we were at 3.9%. by december 12th,s we were at 7.3%. so there is growing concern. as you said, the city are going to issue masks. they're also going to give people tests so they can do it at home. it is also causing problems across restaurants in the city. broadway shows have had to be canceled. audiences in the seat already waiting for the show to start last night when mullan rouge was canceled. so sourp

let's begin our coverage with cnn's shimon prokupecz live in new york city where the positivity rate,himon, has doubled in just days, a tough new reality setting in, shimon. >> a. >> reporter: a tough new reality and causing anxiety and concern here by city officials. v because of the growing number of cases. when you look at the numbers, the seven-day average, everything seems to be going up. up a seven-day average going up. then as you said, the doubling of the number of cases in just a few days. the number of cases went from 3.9% to 7.3%. that has city officials very concerned, one saying they've never seen anything like this before. and then of course the concern over the unvaccinated, where they're seeing a rise in cases of those who are unvaccinated. then always the big marker is the hospitalizations and where that's going, because that is what decides what the government here does, what city and state officials do. right now, they're seeing an uptick in that as well. some of the hospitals have already made some changes to try and alleviate some of the pressure. that seems to be

let's get straight to cnn's shimon prokupecz live in oxford, michigan.ight. police are not buying it, jake. i just got off the phone with the under sheriff here who is in charge of this entire operation. he tells me that at 3:48, around an hour or so ago, that his sergeant who is in charge of the fugitive task force, spoke to this attorney and said where are your clients? and that she told them that she has not talked to her clients, the parents. so there's a lot of information here that's really interesting because if she hasn't spoken to her clients, how does she know that they're on their way back? the police are not buying it. the under sheriff tells me that the sergeant with the fugitive task force told her, have them call us. we need to know where they are. as far as the police are concerned, they are on the run. they are fugitives, and they are continuing their manhunt as they search for them. as you said, you have the fbi, the u.s.

. >> cnn's shimon prokupecz is in times square for more on this. you've been following the testing crisis in new york that we've been seeing here all week. what is the very latest today? >> so, we just got new numbers from the governor. across the state, 360,000 tests now across the state, and the number of people testing positive continues to climate really just kind of an incredible pace. 44,431 people now testing positive for the omicron for the coronavirus. certainly as these numbers continue to increase, of course the city is concerned, the state is concerned, but what they are looking at, and this is really important, kate, is the number of hospitalizations. they say the vaccines are working and that really what it tells them is because the hospitalizations are not increasing, that is a good sign, and that is why we are seeing the mayor and other city officials here say we're going to allow people into times square on new year's eve. we're going to allow less people, 15,000, into these viewing pens. normally they allow up to 60,000, but they

shimon prokupecz is here.he claims in this lawsuit are explosive. >> it's a lot of based on what investigators have already learned in this investigation. the overall arching theme of this is that the police should have been called in to those meetings that the school had with the alleged shooter and his parents. that is what they're saying here, that the fact that they did not do that violated the constitutional rights, the rights to people for these students to be safe in this school and therefore they have filed this $100 million lawsuit. one piece of information that is sort of new, and we're still trying to run it down, is that they say that the shooter, the alleged shooter, posted a tweet the night before where he says, quote, see you tomorrow, oxford. they say that here's exactly what it says. it says that now i am become death, the destroyer of worlds. see you tomorrow, oxford. there's some questions of whether or not that was actually his account. there was a lot of threats surrounding this school, re
