sanjay gupta with us. sanjay, what sort of numbers are you seeing and how concerning is this?at going into the fall because kids were going back to school, weather starting to get cooler and drier in many parts of the country, numbers were going to go up. what is interesting, if you look overall at kids versus adults last week compared to the couple weeks before that, you see that the numbers for kids, children have gone up 14%, with adults it's gone down 17%. the caveat here is that testing is sort of all over the map, frankly. there's a lot of people doing at home testing, not being reported. there are some school districts doing testing on a regular basis. but not all of them. these numbers, you have to take them a little bit with a grain of salt. but again, it's expected as we've seen with other respiratory viruss in the past, when kids start to come back to school, the numbers do go up. they're getting together, you know, in larger groups for the first time in a period of time. what is interesting as well, if you look at the map of the country, just look at the community

sanjay gupta. sanjay, i watch that and i have to say that was scary to see that right there.an you avoid it? >> well, it is not common, thankfully. it is scary. it can sometimes be difficult to figure out, you know, just from a neuroperspective. i'm a brain guy. what you're looking for is in her case she was having difficulty forming the words with her mouth, you could tell she was having difficulty finding the words as well. and that obviously is concerning. you see it transpire on live television. we now know that in her case, as you point out, it sounds like it was the beginning of a stroke. there was a similar episode, this has happened in the past as well, back in 2011, you may remember this with serene branson. >> let's go -- >> again, difficulty finding and forming words there. and in serene's case that was a migraine, an ocular migraine that caused those symptoms. it can be difficult to parse out what is happening there. in julie chin's case, she's 47 years old, she would go to the hospital, what we subsequently learned as well is that she had some difficulty with her

this is one of the worst things, sanjay, when this continues on. not have this sense. >> yes. yeah. it can be loss of smell, which is called anosmia. or distorted smell, per ros nia, when you smell something and it smells like something typically different, particularly rotten. smell chocolate and smells like rotten food instead. interesting, brianna, you get 40% to 50% of people saying i had loss of smell, it affected my taste as a result of this. when they started to actually look into this now two years later and do objective measurements, they found probably much higher. cloe close to 90% had some loss of smell and corresponding loss of taste. significant number. vast majority if those recovered. recovered from sometimes within days. sometimes took weeks but recovered. 5% of people for whom those symptoms persisted. millions of people in the united states. tens of millions of people around the world with persistent complete loss of smell perhaps worse distorted smell. things don't smell at all what you think they'll smell like. >> terrible. awf

sanjay gupta. thank you for being with us as we continue to monitor this.our take on the statement that the palace put out because it says following further evaluation, the queen's doctors are concerned for her majesty's health and recommended that she remain under medical supervision. further evaluation but yet she's not going to the hospital. what does that tell you? >> i can only read into that as much as i think anybody else. and i think that there is not a lot of details and i think that that is by design. further evaluation, we know that she's been evaluated over some time, but now it has turned in to more of a constant medical supervision as opposed to intermittent sort of checks. so that is obviously of concern. we have some idea of her past medical history, that is known, you know, she was hospitalized for example in october of last year. but we didn't have a lot of details about that. but to your point, they told us that she was hospitalized. so what we're hearing now is sort of a little bit difficult to reconcile in the sense that this is obvious

sanjay gupta with more, sanjay?s already began. so this weekend over the next several days certainly these shots should be increasingly available for people. just like they have been in the past. they should be free. you should be able to make appointments, get them from your doctors, clinics, pharmacies, et cetera. a big question as to how long should you wait in between shots? when should you get this shot? that kind of depends a little bit when you received your last shot. so just broadly speaking if you sort of look at the benefits of getting these shots versus not getting any shots at all, you've seen this data before but for people over the age of 50, people who are unvaccinated compared to those who had two or more shots have 14 times the risk of dying and people who are vaccinated with one booster had three times the risk of dying compared to those with two boosters. that gives you an idea of the importance of the shots. how long do these shots last is sort of the second part of the question that helps you a

sanjay is joining us right now.some of what you've learned. >> i've covered a lot of stories over the last 20 years. this one definitely stands alone. i was just really curious about these descriptions around- syndrome. these concussion-like symptoms that people were having. i talked to doctors that were having these patients, talked to the patients themselves, scientists. also went down to cuba, wolf, to see where these incidents actually occurred. but it was one senior intelligence officer they interviewed that gave me the most insight, wolf, into what may have been behind all of this. and i want you to take a little listen. bill avanina was director of the u.s. national security center at time of the incidents in havana. later that, he lead the cia's efforts to combat espionage against the united states. so if anyone knew what the russians were up to in cuba, it was likely him. >> the obama administration reopening the embassy in havana, right? the russian government was not happy with that. but the russians and

sanjay gupta. the coronavirus death toll is now at 6 million.he commission cite as the biggest missteps here? >> there was some significant criticisms as you might imagine. if you look at the numbers overall, globally more than 6 million people have died. in the united states you have 1 million of those 6 million. we're not even 5% of the world's population in the united states yet accounted for that proportion of deaths. there are all sorts of things the commission looked at. at what point did scientists, governments start using evidence that was coming in. were there adequate supplies of personal protective equipment. how quick was the response, even in terms of declaring this a pandemic. you may remember that cnn, for example, cited this was a pandemic before the world health organization, just based on the data and evidence that was coming in. one thing i'll tell you quickly, brianna, they focused in on was the idea that the virus was being spread airborne versus just respiratory droplets. initially there was the talk of keep 6 feet away, it

sanjay gupta joins me now. sanjay, this is really encouraging news.od news for a change. >> so nice. >> we measure these incremental changes in the progress on cancer but it is interesting when you sort of see it play out over decades. 1991 till now what you find is a 32% reduction in the cancer death rates. that's significant and if you actually figure out like what does that translate to, 3.5 million lives saved. people who are alive today who otherwise wouldn't have been. i can tell you, you just showed this back in '71 there was around 3 million cancer survivors in the country. now close to 18 million. which is 5% of the population. if you're out there 1 in 20 people roughly would identify themselves as a cancer survivor which is pretty incredible. >> why? because of a lot of organizations or people getting screenings earlier? >> i think there are several things but a couple major things. first of all the main cancers we're talking about where a lot of this progress has been made lung cancer, colon cancer, prostate cancer, breast cancer. two thing
