nick watt is live in colorado springs this morning. believe you're outside the hospital because there's still so many people injured inside. >> reporter: that is right. there are at least 25 people injured, poppy. five dead. ten of the injured are in this hospital behind me, some of them in critical condition. gun shot wounds and more. last night i spoke to two people who walked out of that club just a couple of minutes before the gunman walked in. and they said it was not busy. maybe 30, maybe 50 people max in there. so five dead, 25 injured amongst that. and those that weren't injured in body, obviously injured in mind during that traumatic, traumatic short burst of gun fire. apparently the gunman walked in just a little bit before midnight and opened fire with a long rifle almost immediately. guys? >> i know that the authorities have not released a full list of the victims, those murdered and those who are still fighting for their lives. we're slowly learning some of their names. i wonder if you heard from any of the victim's famili

nick watt is in colorado springs. nick, the suspect is in the hospital and we're learning new details about him. give us the latest. >> reporter: well, it is key these charges that he's facing because so far investigators have been a little coy about whether they were treating this as a hate crime. they were looking at it threw the lens of a hate crime. now we see firve charges of firt degree murder and a bias crime. among the lgbtq community here in colorado springs they've been saying it was a hate crime directed at their community. two law enforcement sources told cnn that this 22-year-old suspect purchased these firearms himself. that is raising questions. why did it not trigger any red flags because he has had previous run-ins with law enforcement? last summer he -- his mother called police to say that this young man was threatening her with a bomb and other weapons. he was arrested by police here. however, he was never formally charged. charges were not pursued. that wouldn't necessarily show up on a background c

cnn national correspondent nick watt has been tracking this story. what's the latest there?> reporter: alex, this afternoon rich fierro, one of the heroes in this horror, the man who took down the shooter, the brewery that he and his wife own will be reopening today. fierro says they have had a huge influx of orders forty shirts. he said it might take a year to meet those orders, but he will try. his friends are still in the hospital, his daughter is still hurt, recovering, but doing well, and they are all still mourning the loss of their daughter's boyfriend. now, meantime, thanksgiving the club q community held their thanksgiving dinner as they always do, but it was a little different. past years they cooked themselves and brought it to the club. this year everything was donated, including the space by the metropolitan church. no media allowed at the lunch. there are certain things this community needs and wants to do on its own without the glare of media. one of the legacies is going to be red flag laws. they are designed to stop this kind of thing before it happens but t

cnn's nick watt is in colorado springs. i understand you spoke to the suspect's neighbor.y see any signs of this? what did they say? >> well, yeah, jim, not just a neighbor, a pretty close friend. they bonded over video games, spent hours playing games together. one thing this young man xavier kraus told me, he said the suspect is not someone i would have around my gay friends. apparently he had occasional outbursts of anger. he used slurs to describe gay people but also had out bust is its against other races, also. xavier kraus is a 24-year-old young man with a job. he said what really struck him was the kind of differences between his life and the suspect's life. kraus lived in an apartment with his girlfriend. he has a job across the hallway. the suspsuspect, 22 years old, similar age, lived there with his mom and didn't appear to have any direction in life. apparently the suspect very smart, but very alone. few other contacts. you know, we saw during the appearance yesterday by video link from the jail cell behind me, the suspect was slumped, slurring, bruised head. w
