mr. hamlin has reached the hospital.onary care unit, in an intensive care unit for the heart, and some of the questions will be -- is he being actually -- often, after a cardiac arrest, you cool the body and make it hypothermic for 36 hours. are they doing that? is he moving? >> dr. gupta, let me please interrupt you with an update. this is not from a medical professional. this is from jordan -- who is a representative of damar hamlin. he is his marketing representative. he has said, update, his vitals are back to normal and they have put him to sleep to put a breathing tube down his throat. they are currently running tests. what does that tell us? >> that is fantastic news. the fact that his vital signs are already stable is probably on some medication -- he is on a mechanical ventilator, it is very common after a cardiac arrest for patients to be intubated because again, they may be cooling his body from 24 to 36 hours, we don't know. that's a big question here. did he have any purposeful movements? was he engaging wit

mr. hamlin. my prayers and my thoughts are certainly with him and his family at the moment. clustering response on cnn immediately following the shocking scenes of cardiac arrest. and paramedics and the medical team during chest expressions and to figure later on the football field. it illustrates how dangerous football is. i don't think that is the right take away. football is a very dangerous sport. in writing a series for the post on how to make football safer. the issues with repeat concussions and the dangers for example of chronic traumatic associate with the fit for both clearly very dangerous. but in this case it seems that the most likely diagnosis for what happened is a direct impact to the check causing cardiac arrest. it's very rare. that condition is most frequently seen in younger athletes between the ages of 14 and 15. so what i was thinking was this happen at the nfl game with more than 20 trained medical staff available who were come and work on resuscitating mr. hamlin. what if

mr. hamlin is something called camacho cortez. which is basically a cardiac arrest caused by a sharp blow to the chest. at precisely the wrong moments. the heart is governed by electrical impulses. and if the hearts is struck, basically, at the wrong millisecond. in the usual cycle of these electrical impulses. it can cause a catastrophic arrhythmia called a trivial formulation. and that would take about six seconds to figure out. and when you look at the tape, mr. hamlin made the tackle. got hit in the chest. got it right over the heart. that was the blow. he got a 0.2 seconds later, and wanted to second federica laps. that's along a takes few to pass out after your heart formulates. >> but what does that mean? i'm pack that term for us. ventricular fibrillation. what does that mean? >> the heartbeats in a coordinated fashion the heart fibrillator's when the ventricle, the big thick pumping chamber of the heart regulates. and instead of squeezing rick mclean the heart, it delivers. when the heart muscle quiver's. it can't pump bl

mr. hamlin is 24 years old, again his name is damar hamlin, in the league two years.y became clear it was an emergency. first responders came onto the field including in an ambulance, players surrounded him and knelt on the field. medics administered cpr for what espn described as, quote, many, many minutes out on the field. he was given oxygen, there was one report in "the new york times" he appears to have been given an i.v. although that is unconfirmed by any other source and eventually took him off the field which left the stadium at 9:25 p.m. so mr. hamlin's status at this moment, again, is unclear. he is 24 years old. this game is suspended. espn reports that the nfl commissioner roger goodell is in contact with officials about how to proceed whether they'll restart the game. hard to imagine this they will. but this was just an incredibly scary moment tonight. we will keep you posted as we know more. but joining us now is william rhoden. thanks for joining us so quickly as we're covering it as a developing story. let me start by asking it we know any more than w

mr. hamlin? joining us to assess is dr. mark segal. what do you make of what we saw? >> tucker, thanks for having me. obviously america is praying for damar hamlin tonight. a man of great courage, by the way, who rose up from poverty and showed great courage in what he's accomplished in life. he also, by the way, has been first-rounding for his town where he grew up, mckees rocks. what happened on the field? there's more we don't know than what we do know. we don't know whether he has underlying problems, if oxygen was interrupted. he's in the hospital in a coma, probably using steroids to decrease swelling and watch and monitor. the fact he's under probably doesn't mean anything. what's really disturbing, of course, is that he had a blow to the chest that wasn't that severe, and yet he crumpled to the ground, and looked like he was in ventricular fibrillation. the aed improves the prognosis greatly. i don't know when they administered that. i don't know when the heartbeat came back. that's really important. i don't know if he got cpr for 9 minutes, his youth will be o

mr. hamlin. but do the signs point to something people have heard about now as a possible cause?as you know as a physician, it can be difficult sometimes to understand the cause of cardiac arrest, and we may never actually have a definitive answer. it happens more in baseball, hockey, or lacrosse, i don't think at this point we can rule that out because it has been described in football players. again, focus right now is on treating damar and helping him get better and obviously his healthcare team will continue to search for answers about why this happened, and we'll do everything we can to assist them. >> real quick, dr. sills, the screening test that football players have, they're pretty extensive i imagine. is it safe to say if someone aplague at the professional level they don't have a preexisting condition that could have caused this? >> as you said, there is very extensive screening that goes on for our players. they get an ekg done every single season, chest x-ray done when they join the team, and there's a high degree of surveillance if there is a condition, so it's safe

mr. hamlin did suffer crimo show cordes, it was thanks to the preparation of the nfl and the nfl players of all those trained medical professionals and emergency physicians at the game that his life would have been saved. doctor, the likelihood of that being the injury that you saw, is there any other possible explanation? >> well they're certainly, our but have to, agree this is pretty much developing into what we think is commercial cordes. this is a traumatic injury to the interior chest, it has to have been at the exact time when the heart is getting prepared to beat again during that rehabilitation cycle. this is exceedingly rare, however it is almost like getting struck by lightning at is that rare. it has to be acute trauma to the chest, just at the ripe moment. looking at how this is unfolding, you watch that in the video, the trauma, the trauma to the chest is pretty consistent with what you would expect to induce this. the second is the way he stood up and then fell backward, you see that kind of fall, or sink when you have a cardiac event, dysrhythmia of the heart not beating.

mr. hamlin and his entire family in our prayers. it was interesting too, jack, as you know, two teams settled on this, let's stop the game right now, talking about buffalo and cincinnati. they agreed to that. we were told the league heard that decision and was fine with it. is that how it went down? >> that is what i heard. this is unprecedented. i mean this has never happened in the history of the national football league. this is end of the season. teams are getting ready for the playoffs. for the national football league, this timing is not something that you would typically even consider but the fact that those players all took a knee in prayer. you could just see the pain in their eyes. again for me, seeing this is hard to watch. but it truly is the worst nightmare for a player, particularly a defensive player, that is making tackles each and every down, risking neck injures and all type of injuries and you know what you're going into each game. to see this definitely sends chills down your bones. i know being on the sidelines,

mr. hamlin, what -- how effective is cpr? what does it do in that moment?the cpr is really trying to do is do what the heart should be doing, which is the heart is basically pumping oxygenated blood throughout the body. and it sounds like, from their assessment on the field, that he went into cardiac arrest. his heart wasn't doing that. so, essentially what you're doing with cpr is you're trying to essentially -- there's oxygenated blood on the body. you're trying to pump that blood now yusing your hands and pump that blood through the body. what the goals really are are two-fold. one is you likely get the heart restarted in some way. and i would be curious and i'm communicating with jonathan reiner about this. one thing, i don't know if this was done -- maybe you or coy know -- if there in fact was a defibrillator near the field or on the field or if a defibrillator was used. that's something you use to basically give electricity to try and restart the heart. and that is sort of the key, is restarting the heart. in the absence of that, cpr is basically try

mr. hamlin on the field, it appeared that actually looked like he got hit in the chest, and with that particularan cause something called -- sorry, essentially, it's really a freak accident where the blunt force trauma happens at a certain part of the cardiac cycle and causes it to go -- meaning that heart is unable to pump blood out the body. and we are looking at these arteries here, going to the brain. and so if there is not enough blood going to the brain, in particular, you can end up with an eye knocks it brain injury. and if it is too prolonged, you are just going to die and have permanent cardiac arrest. that is why it is so important that he received cpr and got different related very early on in the process. >> would you have to have had a heart problem before for this to happen? or could it happen to a normal heart? or could it happen>> it can hapl heart. >> wow. >> like i said, kind of a freak accident. there is no way you can screen for this. >> that is scary. let me bring you in here, william rhoden, because i think one of the things people have been talking about since to tangaloa

mr. hamlin. he got the cpr right away. >> brian: and the aed separate, right?n and the cardioversion, the aed, they got to very quickly, as well. the time that you get to the patient, this was a witnessed arrest, and it's in the young and healthy individual, so i think the chance for recovery is still there. >> brian: full recovery? >> first we look for meaningful recovery. there's a few components after cardiac arrest. the first component is cardiopulmonary recovery, which is essentially the heart in the lungs which have been stunned, and then recovery. the second is the neurologic recovery, which is essentially from brain trauma. obviously if you're not getting enough blood flow there is a chance that you can have brain damage. hopefully it's none, but there can be varying degrees, unfortunately, from minor to even major brain damage after cpr. the fact that they got to cpr quickly makes it less than. as long as they kept the blood pressure up, it also improves the outcome. the last part of this, he is still in critical condition, and there is inherent compli

mr. hamlin himself. i'm hoping and praying for a full recovery.ing on what happened, which, again, we have limited information, so we can only speculate at this point. >> doctor, what do you take away from the fact there was about ten minutes of cpr? how critical are those early moments after cardiac arrest? >> well, it's well-known that the first minutes, seconds are critically important. we have a saying in cardiology, in medicine in general, that every minute is oxygen deprivation and any minute decreases your likelihood of survival. so it's important that anytime someone has a cardiac arrest, which is just another way of saying your heart stop, and there are a bunch of things that can cause your heart to stop, but in his case it appeared to be defib. if treated right away, the chances ofval are actually pretty good. and if he gets the defibrillator early on, they do very well, particularly in younger, healthy people such as mr. hamlin. >> doctor, obviously, you haven't examined this patient, but walk us through, if you will, we've been talking
