but myles has risen to that challenge. how did you do your research? well, first i'd want to say that i am so grateful to the jurors of the prize and to the candle advisory board and foundation for the support of this work in large part because it was quite a challenge to take up the subject matter and i had doubts about it all along the way. not because it wasn't an incredibly important story to tell. it was. and i felt a calling. i felt a deeply to tell it, but rather because the story was going to be very difficult to corroborate with existing historical documents and the kinds of primary sources that historians tend to want to rely on to reconstruct the past. and this challenge that i face is one that is shared by scholars of slavery, by scholars of enslaved women who are of african and also of indigenous ancestry. it's because these women were not, by and large, the producers of records. they weren't able to tell their own stories and they weren't important that all see record keepers of the day. well, what was available in public records and docu
