and ethan's new book on olmstead in yosemite. i'm sure many of you are familiar with parts of this story. olmstead design of central park and his ideas about yosemite. his work for the movement and for the union army and is helping to shape the concept of the urban and national park in the united states. what's remarkable to consider and what the authors reveal so beautifully is that he was working on all these various projects the same time during the 1860s, both park and yosemite embody the new of freedom that inspired the union during its greatest crisis, epitomized seeing the duty of the republic to enhance the lives and well-being of all of its citizens. marking the bison of olmsted's birth. the birth book sets the historical record straight offers a fresh interpretation of how the american park, urban and national came to figure so prominently our cultural identity. so to keep along, i will hand this off to lauren and thank you very much. thanks. you can see me over the podium. my name? lauren meyer. i'm president of the fr

i arrived in yosemite and therefore yosemite arrived in me. and i was overwhelmed by the beauty of yosemite. i actually think that people who are not overwhelmed by the beauty of yosemite should seek medical care. i remember being in the on the bus with a woman that said, it's not all that. it's not that. and i was thinking how sad that she thinks that this is not all that because yosemite is that and more we should have that on signs yosemite is all that and more because if because the thing that i realized is that when i walk out from the valley visitor center i've walked out into a painting by thomas cole or thomas hill or bierstadt. and when i first saw their artwork, i thought, oh, the romantic period, there are just exaggerating this. and sometimes, you know, bierstadt had a tendency to move things around that were made out of granite because it looked a little bit more dramatic. and the lights and shadows and all of that. but when i was in yosemite, i walked out after closing the visitor center into a bierstadt painting into a thomas hi

yosemite gets a lot of publicity. whether it's a fire, rock site, or someone gets injured, it's always in the news. this week where this change did not reach many people. i think they thought initially of course you need a reservation to camp. there wasn't really clear that you need a reservation to access the park itself. that was the distinction you had to make. >> that is increasingly true. needing reservations just to access the park. at acadia, to do the drive of the mountain. i recently didn't go because i just could not manage, long with everything else involved with taking a vacation as a single mom of three kids, to figure that out. i guess one of the things i'm concerned about is equity here. reservation.gov, a lot of the website. a lot of the reservations are available six months out. congress definitely can't plan six minutes out. we definitely can't plan six months out. i think i've canceled more reservation than i have been able to use. can you talk a little bit about some of the equity issues involved i

lincoln signed into law the yosemite grant. wh this did was it took federal land in california, gave it to the state of california, and said okay, you n keep this land but you must keep it as a natural area. you have to keep it, maintain it for the use and recreation of all men and women. you cannot change. that so we will let you have it. so it is the first time federal land was given to, in this case, a state for permanent protection as a part system. now later on, after lincoln was done, the park service, but national park system was created, and yellowstone became the very first national park. california said, we will just give the land back to the federal government, either back in the federal government made it the third national park. the yosemite valley and the mariposa grove, big trees, sequoias, redwoods, became the third national park. and i will just tell you right now, if anybody asks me of the second national park is between yellowstone and yosemite, i do not know. somebody, look that up in case somebody asks that

this picture of yosemite. it almost looks like a painting. it is so beautiful as we take a look at the snow there on some of those iconic sites. i don't know if you'll be able to get there because the roads have been so treacherous, but let's talk about the sierra snow pack. right now in the northern part of the sierra, 192% of its normal amount. the southern sierra, 267% of its normal amount of snow for this date and we've also had some huge amounts of rainfall. now that we have a chance to dry out for a little while, we can see where we stand. in santa rosa, we're over 21 inches of rain measured so far for the water year. that is a surplus of over 6.5 inches. you can see the measurements for san francisco and oakland. 18 inches of rainfall. and livermore getting over 13 inches of rain and then what that is above normal in san jose measuring over 7 inches of rain. oakland, livermore, more than double its normal amount of rainfall as we see these huge amounts of rain and all this moisture from these atmospheric rivers. our reservoirs, we have
