the city of mount vernon is one of the lowest paid police departments in the region. urban area and since police reform we have lost 35% of our officers to surrounding communities. our police department was largely black and brown. now i can go to a police scene and not see one black or brown officer at a police scene, which is critical in a community which is 85% black and brown. that is really, really, scary. i do not see that getting better unless urban communities or other resource communities who don't have a tax base find a way to work through some of those challenges. it is critical. we've had to go from state tours to going back around the wheel. that was more of an incentive for other people to transfer because the staffing levels became so low. mayor jones and i have talked about our communities being the cop shop if you are in an urban community you are atf, dea, fbi trained with different task forces they have all of these great resources other departments want to come recruit them. you can recruit them for almost nothing after you spent nine months puttin
