hugo, political investigations reporter for the guardian. and, former federal prosecutor glenn kirschner. hugo, you have been reporting of a storm specifically about trump's lawyers being told that donald trump is a target of the investigation, that is very significant. until now, we have talked around, it but now he is official. what more can you tell us? >> yes, look, in many ways, you know, this is not news. it is quite apparent that he has been focused on this investigation for months, and the fact that his lawyers have -- in recent days that he has been a target of this investigation comes both the espionage act of the inga government and is very significant and part of the impetus for basically the legal team in their meeting on monday with both special counsel and the senior career official and the attorney generals office, to try and stave off an indictment, and allegations on prosecutorial misconduct, and getting the special counsel to stand down. >> glenn, what do you think, what is your reaction to trump 's lawyers being told he i

someone who's been covering this case from day one, political investigations reporter for the guardian hugo lowe. you've got some new reporting on that meeting yesterday between trump's lawyers and top doj officials in washington. what have you learn as to what was discussed in that meeting? >> yes, the read out we got of this meeting is trump lawyers went primarily to complain about perceived prosecutorial misconduct. and in particular they singled out jay brad, the head of the counter intelligence section at the department of justice. and from what we understand that did not go over so well at the doj. you know, trump lawyers met with jack smith and also met with the senior nonpolitical official of the deputy attorney general's office and the complaints they were not thrilled to hear that, they did not find that particularly productive and the meeting kind of wrapped up after 90 minutes. you know, i think a lot of of this was -- this was an interesting meeting because the letter -- they did not actually think they were going to get a meeting with anyone senior at the justice department an

that's really the case we've got and really there's nothing to be said in his favor. >> hugo, you'veeen reporting on the doings around this, around trump's legal circle. i wonder if you could share anything you've gleaned or learned about how the trump circle is dealing with this. a lot of them have individual exposure. a lot of them have retained journeys. evan corcoran, is reporting is to be believed, and major part of this case, which is not usually the case when you are a criminal defense lawyer. what does this mean for that circle? >> i was speaking to a number of trump lawyers, probably an hour before trump announced himself that he had been indicted. i can say that people inside the inner circle did not think he was gonna be indicted today. that being said, they did make preparations frumpy our side which shows where the priorities are all the way through and i do know that several people on the team went up to bedminster earlier than they had anticipated going, because they decided they needed to be with trump in case this indictment came down, and when it did come down they

joining us now is hugo lowell.g not listened to it, but having heard the accounts from people who have. what did the former president say and what does it tell us about what he knew about the documents in his possession? >> reporter: our reporting suggests he went a little further and on the tape he made a suggestion that he should have declassified this military document related to iran when he was in the white house and he still had presidential power to declassify, but he had not done so. it comes back to the point about how he seems to be acknowledging on tape for the first time that the theory about how he declassified everything that ended up at mar-a-lago and elsewhere were totally declassified because he thought about declassifying it or because he took it with him to the residence. i think the fact that the documents, according to our reporting, was classified at the secret level is significant. that's the level that the government charges in espionage cases. you don't want something that is too classified

welcome, guys, hugo, you first.of defense options they are outlining from trump's team today. how plausible are these arguments? >> look, we understand, from people close to trump world, that the lawyers did identify an argument that had been returned to the national archives. that was classified at the -- level. and referenced iran. from what i understand, that document matched what trump was saying on this recording, from july 2021, about 67 70%. not exactly sure that this is the one in the same document. the trump references on the tape. so, there's now this question of, did trump actually make the entire thing up? and was he, as his lawyer said, completely bluffing? that would throw open a whole new set of issues for both the special counsel, but also potentially, trump. >> jordan, if trump was bluffing about the document, is that a reasonable defense? >> well, i don't think so. the whole thing about this it goes to trump's mindset. it shows that he knows, at the very least, there are restrictions on sharing cla
