and those sea lions are more likely to be sea lions that have had a seizure and are completely unaware of their surroundings. just erratically swimming and then they bumped into somebody and that somebody, doctor, alyssa, deming of the pacific marine mammal center in laguna beach, says the bites are likely related to the dramatic increase in 6 sea lions. they've been rescuing in recent weeks. thanks to an algae bloom off the coast. >> through the food chain, the m-cas it from that algae gets into the sea lines causing all kinds of problems that the m-cas is a toxin, a neurotoxin that impacts the brain. >> you're hit the campus in particular and that results in seizure activity. >> and those seizure activities can result in animals acting anywhere from completely comatose and unresponsive to very hyperactive, confused and disoriented. that's one reason. doctor deming wants the public to be extra careful. >> this coming holiday weekend. >> i think it's very important to let the public know that the best thing that they can do for these animals is to give them their space. these are wild

how are the sea lions doing overall? i mean, we know and we've talked about the fact that they're facing a number of different threats, whether it's climate change, whether it's pollution, whether it's overfishing. how are the sea lions doing at pier 39 and beyond? well, i mean, the good news is that they're thriving. there's been a lot of note made and efforts made to make our oceans cleaner and better. and they're like the sentinels of our efforts and our with the ocean. and so we're seeing somee the opposite. you'll seeomoic a, which affectsrains and makes them lethargic. you'll see that those who've got fishing line wrapped around their necks and but, you know, we have a great rescue protocol in the marine mammal center. we've been partners with them for over 30 years. and we go out there and rescue the animals with them and they thrive by getting taken to that fantastic marine mammal center in in sausalito. so we've come a full circle from 1200 to, but we still have a lot of very healthy animals out there. all right

each one of these sea lions is sick from a deadly toxin. so lethargic it can't seem to hold its head up. another having seizures, and most of them cannot eat on their own. >> i see a lot of young pups here. >> a lot of these animals are pregnant. now, it is a concern that pups may have been exposed. >> reporter: veterinarian lauren palmer says the sea lions get sick after consuming fish that have eaten toxic algae. >> reporter: there's no way these animals can avoid this because it's in in their food supply. >> they couldn't avoid it even if they knew. >> reporter: under the right conditions the algae creates a neurotoxin called domoic acid, and it appears to have spread further offshore than in the past, so beachgoers are also seeing poison dolphins. >> we're receiving over 300 calls a day, the numbers are unprecedented in my history, which has bee 35 years. >> reporter: dr. sam dover's organization is rescuing and treating scores of sick sea lions stranded on southern california beaches. >> when we go out there and see so many animals, we

6, a harmful algae bloom off the coast of southern california is poisoning an alarming number of sea lions often officials at the marine mammal care center's say they're at capacity with sick animals in the first few weeks of june, hundreds of sea lions and close to 60 dolphins died. officials say the red tide, which is algae bloom stretching along the southern california coast. had a tragic impact on the marine mammal population while fish and other animals can withstand ingestion of the toxin. that's in the algae. currently in the bloom, many marine mammals and birds can not. so in effect, the usual food chain is now a threat to the larger animals which havn been dying up and down the coast. sadly, they say the worst is yet to come. >> these blooms tend to happen between 6 to 8 weeks in duration. and, you know, we are maybe 2 weeks so we have good, long time before this is going to be over. and we already have, you know, next to 60 animals and we're getting calls already this morning for more animals stranded on the beach. >> things happen normally out there. i think what's happening is
