now something has come out of that lawsuit that is a lot more troubling than trump's puppet list puppet show. john kelly, donald former chief of staff has given new testimony in that lawsuit. he said in a sworn statement that donald trump while he was president discussed having the irs and other federal agencies investigate lisa page and peter struck as retaliation for their work on the russia investigation. in other words, trump allegedly tried to use the power of the federal government to punish his political enemies. and "the new york times" has some additional reporting that it did not stop with those two fbi agents. quote, mr. trump had at times discussed using the irs and the justice department to target others including hillary clinton, amazon ceo jeff bezos, and former cia director john brennen. joining us now is john brennen who is both the former cia director and in this apparent club of people targeted by the former president. for those who have forgotten the way in which you have very plainly critical of the former president, i'll read one of your choice tweets in march of 2018 addressed to the form

john miller. renato, let me start with you, what's different this morning than was yesterday? yes, donald trumpaces these additional charges, but what if anything about these charges makes his legal predicament different? >> well, one thing, john, is they now have found the document that was being referred to in that recording we just heard. i think that's important. ultimately that is some of the best evidence that jack smith has. it's evidence that makes it clear that trump admits that the document wasn't declassified. we now know in the indictment that document was top secret. he's going to be able to show that document to the jury. i think that's important. and, look, trying to delete and destroy surveillance footage, that is very explosive and it's just going to be hard to explain away. all of the stuff about classified documents for a lot of people might be hard to get their heads around, but it's very hard for me to believe that jurors are going to not be able to understand that when you're deleting footage when the fbi is investigating you, you know, that means you know you've done some

john kelly. what are the implications for trump when someone like kelly starts spilling the beans? >> well alex, what it tells us is that for the long period time that we have seen donald allies with unshakable loyalty, that period may be coming to and. we are talking about mark meadows, we are talking about john kelly, we are talking about so many different other people who seemed to be impenetrable parts of the trump dynasty in terms of information in proximity now beginning to release details, this is something that should be a significant concern, because here's what i can tell you, alex. not everyone who's cooperating or providing formation is necessarily talking to the press. what i mean by that is that there may likely be more individuals who are providing all sorts of information across the board about their time and insight with respect to the former president. and so if we hearing about these people in the press, imagine who were not hearing about behind closed doors her talking to not just media, but also prosecutors as well. this is something that should be of significant concern to donald trump. >> point well taken. carl, you wrote about possible disfigure

out how to speak more directly to that republican base, which so far remains in love with donald trump. >> johni mean, here's someone who is so aware of just how difficult it is to raise money and to continue raising money. how do you see this? >> i think the biggest problem that desantis has, jose, is that he's just not connecting. you know, he's out in the field. remember, i said there's kind of three things that you need when you run for president. one is you need money. number two you need ideas, and number three, you need magic. we're not seeing the magic out of him at this point. that's what i think has caused alarm, and his pivot to the -- really to the hard right, i think, is just not getting him anywhere. the problem is if you want to -- if you want to go with him because he's, you know, sort of this anti-woke guy, why not go with the real thing, which happens to be trump. so i think he's in a competition that doesn't make a lot of sense to me, but bottom line is he just doesn't seem to be connecting. can he start to connect? can he change things? we're going to have to wait and see. t

the consequence of that, john, is that donald trump gets to be president again if all of this stuff isn't out there and he's not held accountable. >> it's a very, very worrisome scenario that he could actually run for office while being indicted and maybe even being convicted and going to jail. who knows what he will do in terms of trying to pardon himself if he were to be elected. it is so critically important that a trial be held, or trials be held before so that all these allegations of his involvement in january 6th, of his mishandling, egregious mishandling of classified documents, this really needs to come to the fore of a court so that a jury can in fact determine whether or not donald trump's guilty as charged. but it really is quite appalling that an individual who has all these allegations against him is the leading republican candidate for the office of presidency. i still shake my head. i find it so surreal that republican voters out there, at least those in the base, continue to stand by him. >> director, legal experts tell me all these indictments, this is the third, would b

joining me now is the former national security adviser to donald trump, john bolton, ambassador, thankor being here tonight, what do you make of the fact that the former president and your former boss is on the verge of potentially being indicted in this case? >> well, we haven't seen the indictment yet, although i agree, it certainly looks like one is coming, almost any day. we don't know the exact scope of it which could have a big influence, but i have to say, this being the third indictment, not having seen real political impact negative to trump on the first to, in fact, if anything it helped bolster his stature with supporters, a third indictment or even a fourth indictment, i don't think it is going to change that much politically. i think the single most important question now on the legal side is whether any of these cases actually get to trial before the 2024 election. that is what is gonna be important. not this indictment or that indictment or the next indictment. which case if any gets to trial, and does he get convicted? >> yeah, and we saw his attorneys in court for the

you point out john kelly, there's another example in our book dozens and dozens of times, not just once donald trump demanded that his enemies have their security clearances taken away, people like john brennen, for example. and this was something where he sought to weaponize the machinery of government but also to weaponize information, which is what he's doing there with general milley. milley particularly infuriated him because he chose him himself. he tried to basically embarrass and undermine jim mattis, who was the defense secretary he was feuding with, and he thought, well, i'm going to pick this guy, general milley, instead of it preferred choice who was an air force general of jim mattis. and then it really didn't work out. again, i would just like to point out that this kind of a feud between the top uniformed nonpolitical military officer and the commander in chief is almost without precedent in modern american history. it is something that really struck at sort of the foundations, and this began back during the election year in 2020, but this is some of the most extraordinarying i've eve

we heard in the january 6 hearings that ronnie mcdaniel received calls from donald trump and john eastman to discuss this and she didn't want anything to do with it. the fact that all accept states -- seven states came up with the same plan suggests that somebody was organizing it. i know in michigan some declined to sign the fake slate of electors because they knew what they were signing was false and a lie. so the mere fact that they have been charged in michigan does not preclude jack smith from charging them federally. although he may prefer to focus on the leaders and the organizers of the scheme and leave for the states to prosecute the individuals who knowingly signed these false slates of electors for the purpose of defrauding voters. >> easier to prosecute somebody whose signature is on the line, right? but how do you connect that to donald trump? >> yeah, exactly. and that is what jack smith will have to look for. there is nothing that would prevent the states from charging the individuals. but i imagine one of the things that jack smith will examine is whether he can make that

see, john, how this comes together today, and the grand jury here is meeting at the courthouse, and any time they are together, they could be asked to look and approve an indictment against donald trumpg of whether there is a meeting today, if that would impact the timing of a possible indictment? >> john, it could. i mean, the last time that donald trump got this target letter, there was a 20-day window between donald trump being told that he would be indicted and then him actually getting indicted and the meeting that they had was at the beginning of the week, and the same week they went to the grand jury to ask them to approve that indictment in florida, and so it is a question of whether the justice department is going to request these lawyers to dissuade them from bringing the case and time to think it over or some sort of conclusion that merges out of the meeting if it does happen, and if the justice department does allow the trump lawyers to come in to meet with them, and tell them at the meeting that we have considered all of the arguments and ready to move forward and we just don't know, and of course, we won't have a full window into that meeting unless it happens potential
