i'm garvin thomas. no matter where you live, you probably heard of illegal fireworks last night was a busy one for fire crews everywhere. fires were up 25% from last year's fourth of july. we have exclusive video of one of those fires right in a family's backyard. pete talks with them about the frightening experience. >> reporter: this is a video from the family driving towards their home last night in walnut creek. the vegetation fire burning hundreds of feet behind the house and their biggest fears, coming alive. >> we were driving down the street and just the flames. without our house was on fire. >> we were wondering what we grab? our neighbors had grabbed our dogs already. >> reporter: their home wasn't damaged, thank you. county fire says more than 60 fires burned across the county between 8:00 to 3:00 a.m. this fire along with another fire were likely connected to fireworks. we spoke with the antioch homeowner who says his dogs will come up potentially saving his life. >> i heard the crackling an

six years ago garvin told us about one of those. although it turns out it was one of a kind because it actually happened again, and garvin joins us to tell us about that. >> i often mention how many "bay area proud" stories we tell. we aired our 800th story. i often get asked which is my favorite, and i couldn't possibly choose one. but i can say what was the most watched and shared of all those stories, well, now there's more to that story. in 2016 we met megan, then just 6 years old. when she and her mom were fostering, rescuing and training dogs out of their morgan hill home. back then a dog they had once fostered, daisy, had run away from its new home in hollister. for months experienced rescuers tried and tried and failed to capture daisy. finally asking megan and her mother for help. the pair drove to hollis ter and found daisy in a field. megan jumped out of the truck and lay down near her. as karen watched, and recorded, the dog that had run for so long from so many well-meaning adults, succumbed to the charms of this 6-year

audrey asistio >> i am garvin thomas. a contentious debate is happening as we speak in the city of berkeley surrounding the issue of license plate readers. a virtual community meeting is taking place now though the idea has already been rejected once by the police accountability board. some think it brings more security and others less privacy. >> reporter: automated license plate readers are not a new concept in the bay area but it would be the first for the city of berkeley bringing mixed opinions. >> if they do it right i think we'd have to try it out and see. >> reporter: with crime on the rise the police department wants to install 52 automated license plate readers on major streets and intersections. the real time alerts would be used to spot stolen cars and vehicles used in crimes or connected to missing people. some welcome this and others worry about the privacy. >> anything that would help the police do their job better, more efficiently, and actually target the vehicles that carry people trying to commit crime

garvin thomas spent time with the team recently. joining us this morning live, good to see you. let's talk about the secret to their success. did they give you something? >> yes, they did. great to see you this morning. now, i've got to confess, as a sports fan, the reason dominance of this team kind of flew under my radar, but when you're this good for this long in college sports, you've got to look at the coach. stanford's coach for the last two decades, they've always been good, but i asked him why the incredible success recently. he said in the past they had trouble finding enough top athletes who would get accepted at stanford. so he focused at working with high school prospects early to help them get academically ready for the school. he said he's gotten better at spotting good athletes who are still open to coaching, as opposed to those who think they've got it all figured out. it's a formula that is clearly working. >> must be doing it right. we've had a great run with the guys and we've got a great group. we've had as many as 11 on the national team at one time, which i

thank you, garvin. we turn now to chris cox. chris. thank you, chris. by the time coolidge took the national stage, the progressive era had run its course. and that gave him the opportunity to assess based on real results, real world results, its successes and failures, the fundamental challenge that this presented is that progressivism in practice had diverged wildly from its aims. america, at the end of the wilson administration, was beset with race riots, runaway inflation, violent strikes and the suppression of civil liberties. in practice. progressive initiatives such as the income tax and prohibit one were proving to have very different impacts and middle class households than progressive theory had predicted. the income tax appeared in 1913 and it began with a relatively low top rate of 6%. it applied to the most wealthy people in america with incomes of $15 million and up adjusted to today's dollars. but by 1920, when coolidge ran for vice president, the 6% rate now applied all the way down to incomes of $20,000, adjusted to today's dollars. and
