jeremy, you work in the white house ever day. it's filled with surveillance cameras. how can there possibly be a blind spot in the area where specifically hundreds of staff and tourists pass through each day? >> reporter: yeah, jake, it is boggling to see that there is this blind spot that exists apparently in one of the most secure parts of the building, which is the west wing. by secret service officials that there was no camera trained on those cubbies directly, and that is where that baggy of cocaine was found, was inside one of these cubbies at the lower level entrance to the west wing. now, one piece of information to note here is that that is the entrance that these tour groups that go through the west wing actually use to get in there. and these cubbies are where visitors are asked to leave their phones before they enter the west wing because you're not allowed to take pictures inside that space. that being said, the secret service combed through hundreds of visitor logs of individuals who wept through the white house over those last several days, and they sim

for more on this, i'm joined by cnn white house correspondent jeremy diamond, what are you learning?ming what we broke earlier today which is that the secret service has closed this investigation into this baggy of cocaine that was found inside the west wing nearly two weeks ago. the secret service says that this is due to a quote, lack of physical evidence, and comes despite an investigation that included going through visitor logs, surveillance footage, even trying to pull dna and fingerprints from this baggy of cocaine. the secret service says there was insufficient dna evidence from the baggy, and they were not able to pull fingerprints from that small bag of cocaine, which we're told was under one gram. and so ultimately they weren't able to identify who among the hundreds of people who went through that west wing entrance over the last few days before that baggy was found, who might have been responsible for bringing it. we're told that's also in part because there was a surveillance footage blind spot over these cubbies where this baggy of cocaine was found. the white house sa

diamond is live for us at the white house. jeremy, what more are officials saying about what they found? >> reporter: yeah, well, the secret service followed protocol here because they discovered this powdery substance on sunday evening. they briefly evacuated the white house complex, a hazmat team came and cleared the substance as not a threat. what they did discover, a field test, according to two sources telling cnn that the white powdery substance tested positive for cocaine. these field tests are not conclusive, and this substance was sent in for further evaluation and testing. president biden, for his part, he was not at the white house as all of this was occurring. he was at camp david over this holiday weekend. a secret service spokesman, he says that the powdery substance was found, quote, in a work area within the west wing, but we don't know exactly what that would entail. we should note that over the holiday weekend in particular, but over any weekend you typically do have guests who are visiting the white house, sometime

let's get straight to our white house current jeremy diamond. >> reporter: here at the white house and also the state department are closely monitoring this situation that is unfolding, the operation unfolding inside the west bank. they are not saying much more beyond that. all we've heard from both the spokesperson from the national security council as well as the state department, the u.s. reiterating its support for the u.s.'s right to defend itself while calling on israel to exercise strikes, particularly as it relates to civilians saying it's imperative to take all possible precautions to prevent the loss of civilian lives. what u.s. officials are also monitoring here is what hadas just mentioned, and that's the concern that this operation inside the west bank could escalate into some kind of a broader conflict between israeli and palestinian militants both in the west bank and gaza. u.s. officials over the last couple years have played an important role in trying to immediate some of the conflicts that have erupted between israeli and palestinian militants and really to a good de

the answer is no, they're not. >> jeremy, when you talk to white house officials, when you talk to folks in the early stages, still probing, but it's been hard going. nobody denies that. ukrainians acknowledge that as well. have they seen anything from the white house perspective that gives them optimism that there could be a major breakthrough? >> not as of yet. this white house is willing to be patient with the ukrainians and understanding that the ukrainians are following a deliberate strategy with this counteroffensive and they won't be knocked off. there is hope within the white house that the counteroffensive can make some progress. there's some understanding that it has not made the progress yet, which is part of the reason why we've seen these cluster bombs get sent out to the ukrainians and just a general concern of running out of munitions which is something the ukrainians are dealing with. i think they're optimistic about the prospects of the counteroffensive but they're also realistic about it. they'll do what they can to help. the ukrainians will always say this is not enoug

white house over the weekend will now be sent out for further testing. the discovery of the powder triggered a brief evacuation on sunday night. cnn's jeremy been covering this story. what do we know so far? >> reporter: alex, this powdery substance was discovered at the white house sunday evening and prompted a brief evacuation, the secret service following protocol. what we've learned according to two sources familiar with the matter is that powdery substance tested positive for cocaine. that positive test came back in a field test which can sometimes be not totally conclusive. so the substance was sent out for additional testing. we haven't yet gotten the results of that. one source describing it as a white, powdery substance found in a zip-loc bag. a spokesman says this was found in a work area inside the west wing of the white house where white house staffers would have access to that area. but over the weekend, we should note that typically there are tourists sometimes, visitors who come through the white house accompanied by white house staff and get tours of the west wing. that's something to note here. the secret service says that
