"today in the bay"'s bob redell is live near the scene in san leandro. what are they telling you happened? >> reporter: yeah, good morning to you. chp tells us that around 2:00 this morning we were chasing a car that was speeding on eastbound 580, and as you can see in the video that car eventually got off the freeway and crashed not far from where i'm standing at 163rd and liberty. it turns out that car was stolen, that there were three men inside. they all had ski masks on. it's not clear what they were up to. that's part of the investigation. the men took off on foot with the chp officer running after them. when they got a couple blocks down the street, two of the men attacked the officer. they tried to disarm him. around this time an alameda county sheriff's deputy also arrived on the scene in response to the crash, saw the struggle, and according to the sheriff's office that deputy and the chp officer fired several shots and killed one of the men involved in the struggle with the officer. the other man was taken into custody. deputies then deployed

san leandro police responded to the scene after the crash. they say right now the driver is not facing any criminal charges. police in san jose have made arrests in connection with several burglaries involving smoke shop type business. police say those burglaries happened between march and april of this year. 24 year old jose caballos was as well as three juvenile suspec were all taken into custody. in total, those burglaries. police say the suspects had a pattern of using stolen vehicles to crash into the businesses, causing significant damage to the entrances and breaching the structures they would then enter the shops and steal merchandise before taking off those suspects are also believed to be responsible for several additional burglaries outside of the city of san jose. new data shows san francisco is making some progress when it comes to helping people who are homeless. according to a san francisco comptroller's office report, san francisco and berkeley reported a decrease in overall homeless 3% and 5% respectively from 2019 to 2022. oa
