but the race isn't over, says governor chris sununu, the new hampshire republican is out with a new op-edlive. thank you for being here. in our op-ed you wrote that donald trump is beatable and it starts in iowa and new hampshire, but if you look at the poll that i was just talking about, trump is leading by 23 points in iowa. so what makes you think that he's beatable? >> so one of the key points of that poll showed that about a third of trump supporters would consider somebody else. when you look at the favorable/unfavorable of all the different candidates desantis is better than former president trump, tim scott has strong numbers. other candidates are showing strong numbers and knowing that there is a huge swath of folks that would potentially leave the former president. i think we all agree the former president's floor is high, 32, 33, 34%, but his ceiling is also very low. realistically the ceiling at his best is 45%, but probably gets down to 40%, 42% as we get closer to the elections. given that, again n iowa and new hampshire he polls about 10% -- 10 points lower than he does nat

new hampshire, joining us is chris sununu. governor, thank you so much for being with us.hat former president trump will not be the 2024 republican nominee. do these poll numbers make you question that? >> no. it is a national poll, so with all due respect to the basket and montana's and even texas of the world, that is not where the discussion is happening. so where candidates are investing their money, where they're pushing their message like iowa and new hampshire, look at those polls. and, in new hampshire, two of the last three polls have trump under 40. the rcep average in iowa right now is trump at 42. and what is happening -- >> i saw numbers from a university of new hampshire that to show the former president with a 14 point lead over desantis. >> he has a lead, of course he has a lead, but his total, it's not what he has. you have to look what he doesn't have. in places like iowa and new hampshire he doesn't have well over 50 in some polls, over 60% of the hard-core republican base. so where the candidates are investing their money and certain candidates are star

and if people don't make the debate stage, should it be as chris sununu is suggesting, get up, move on>> certainly people that don't make the debate stage, but even people after the debate polling in the low single digits need to get out. we have no idea what donald trump is going to do. i would be surprised if he showed up. it's absolutely the right political decision for him not to. those people on the debate stage need him a lot more than he needs them. if he can starve them of attention, we know he's going to be doing counter programming. those people would love to have him show up. more people will hear what he has to say. the right move for him politically, it's not without risk. there's a chance that a lot of these candidates say, look, he doesn't respect you, and really one of their goals should be to egg him on, to get on that debate stage at some point so that they can draw him closer to him. whether they will be willing to do that, they haven't been willing to criticize him yet. can they egg him on to the next debate stage next month? >> do you see in the end one person emer

my republican governors, charlie baker, ned lamont in a democrat and phil scott in vermont and chris sununuhat you can basically, and the buck was passed. it was important to listen to people and get their letters of concern and hear from people and what was going on in their daily lives. i found that very grounding. she wrote me constantly about home schooling her two young children, taking care of a disruptive dog, birthing a goat kid in the spring and how she was handling the family finances and small business that was run by her and her husband. that was important for me to hear. it was important to hear from the mouths of children like a young savannah in bangor, who wrote, "governor mills, i hope this covid thing doesn't isolate our hearts from one another." that was so important. i wrote back and said "savannah, we're not going to let this isolate our hearts from one another because we are family." it was important to communicate with people at all levels. >> also very important, if i could add, this is a governor who made a marathon of politically unpopular decisions and was reelect

it is a point chris christie made me last night, governor sununu made it the other night. don't look at national polls, look at new hampshire, look at iowa polls. trump doesn't look as strong. there it is a closer margin. do you buy that? >> the problem is, we have seen an iowa poll where trump is still 20 points ahead of desantis. so, the real question is whether we are talking about national polls or statewide polls. are they an accurate reflection of what we are seeing on the ground? i am talking with political leaders and evangelicals in iowa, new hampshire, and they say what they see and feel and hear from voters, it is not reflected in the polls. they see more people are looking elsewhere from donald trump, and looking to candidates whether it is desantis or tim scott, or vivek. look, there's so much headlines, so much palace entry and policy conversations about the shuffling of the, deck in the desantis campaign, i could tell you this, if you are ever going to change your staff, now is the time to do so, and i know james, the person that has just been moved as campa
