the question is, a strong el nino? because if it is a strong el nino that does tilt the odds a little more heavily in favor of an above average winter in terms of precipitation, right now the odds on that are 66%. not bad that is where they stand now. an update on this. we get it every month. coming out in the middle of this week. stay tuned we will have the latest information. the other weird thing, look at the pool of water off of the pacific. we never had a strong el nino at the same time we had a huge persistent marine heatwave in the pacific like that. we don't know low it will effect the storm track even driven by el nino. just for fun these are the sea surfaces, it is still cold out there in the north pacific it is just warmer than average. let's switch our focus now. we are going to and back to the near term. look at what happened today in the sierra? still had thunderstorms. this was between 4:00 and 8:00 tonight. i am showing you what it looked like out there now. thunderstorms from the sierra are coming from

and that's where you get your el nino.l start to change the jet stream patterns around. not only the pacific but around the globe. so they affect the entire globe out. there you see the warmer waters now beginning to show up in orange in deep red here. so we're heating things up now and expected that this could develop a very likely into a strong el nino for that to happen. it's got to get over a degree and a half or 2 degrees warmer out there in waters right now. you can see the models projecting this to top out, maybe just over 2 degrees. so this could be a significant el nino event. how that all works out as far as rain that is left to be seen during the years of 1997 98. that is when we had a tremendous strong el nino and you can see all the green well above average rainfall. in fact, that year that rain season, we had 47 inches of rain. if you can imagine that now a similarly strong el nino occurred in 2015 2016 and that's what many scientists recall that the godzilla vault el ninos. and you can see what happened. you

but of course, any el niÑo doesn't catch it. if it will be a strong el niÑo because they tend to up the odds that they will impact our winter in ways to get more rain than average. and let me show you what it looks like right now. that's the snow pack in the sierra looking at it from last march. it looks pretty good. so it is just a review of how wonderful things look there. these are the sea surface temperatures on the globe. of course, the place we look is that patch of the equator that's just off the east of south america and it is the eastern waters. they're now warm enough that not only is there 95% degree of confidence that we'll have an el niÑo, but a 66% chance in terms of that degree of confidence that there will be a strong one. that's really what we would care about. if it's a strong el niÑo, that'll wait the odds a little bit more towards an active storm track for us this winter. and it is a 66% chance that the odds will be waited towards that and should that come together. the odds are more likely that we don't even

let's talk about this el nino thing, shall we? because we are in an nino year. it looks like a strengthening el nino least as we head to the beginning of next year. that generally refers to when we've got trade winds that blow from east to west. and that means they're blowing that surface water. the warmer surface water towards asia. but in other years, we see a weakening of those trade winds. that's what's happening right now. and that leads to the opposite. and then we get el nino, which generally trends wetter in the south, drier in spots like the ohio valley and warmer in the north. now notice we sit right here, kind of not really exactly either one of them. and that's what makes a little interesting force in northern california as to whether we can say, oh, this is absolutely going to be like this or not, right. so what we do know is that the connection between atmospheric rivers, meaning that big moisture plume enhancing some of those low pressure systems when they bring rain and snow in the winter to us, that kind of tends to happen more when there's an e

when that happens, you get into el nino and typically during el nino year, you see the jet stream kind of change position a bit. we get wet. what weather wetter weather i should say to the south. we get warmer weather to the north and then drier weather in the area that you see in the ohio valley. but notice we're kind of in between. right? so for us, it's not quite as specific of an indicator, but what it can do is suggest a better connection between storm systems and atmospheric rivers, meeting stronger systems. and that's kind of what we're seeing set up here that's headed toward the pacific northwest as we speak with that low pressure tracks and it taps into that atmospheric river of moisture. so it's just really deep moisture sometimes called the pineapple express because it comes from far back in the pacific towards hawaii. and then it intensifies the snow or rain depending on season wherein it intensifies those totals. so that's what we're seeing set up right now with the system that's headed to the pacific northwest. you can see where some of those yellows and oranges are. that
