what's happening inside of the house gop right now is such a reflection of what we are seeing insideublican party more broadly on the campaign trail when it comes to the debate over ukraine. yes president volodymyr zelenskyy came to capitol hill. he made his overtures to republicans to stand with ukraine, especially when it comes to funding the effort from the united states perspective, but there's diminishing interest in the trump wing of the party to keep up that same level of spending for ukraine. in that particular issue is what is vexing speaker mccarthy as he moves forward. he ultimately is likely to remove ukraine funding from the house republican government spending plan and hope to push it through, but senate republicans and senate democrats could reject that. >> if there is a shutdown, what kind of price are republicans going to pay for that? >> a government shutdown, and i've covered many over the past 10, 15 years, usually has political fallout that affects both parties. the house republicans are often painted when there's a democratic president, as being unworkable when

the move represents another stumbling block for kevin mccarthy who has been negotiating with house goprs, and it is not a good sign for the government shutdown that could begin next week. i spoke with congressman don bacon of nebraska to get the republican perspective. very good to have you on bbc news. thank you for joining us. we have seen right wing part of the republican party block a defense bill from coming to the floor today. do you make of that? sen. bennet: can -- >> it is irresponsible. to have five people on the republican party oppose the bill , and by the way, all of them actually like the bill. they are voting no for other reasons. not what that bill. i call the dysfunction caucus. and i have encouraged the speaker to start reaching across the aisle. we need to do a bipartisan solution to this. you cannot count on these five to 10 republicans, out of our 222. they will never get to yes. they move the goal posts. you have to work with the senate anyways. let's start working across the aisle and get a bipartisan deal now. sumi: what do these republicans actually walked? rep

frankly, i wish the house gop would focus on the business in frankly this is a fishing expedition. nce to launch a formal inquiry, which is why there will not be a vote on the house floor. this is just putting a wrapper around the existing inquiries house republicans have been engaging in now, without clear outcomes or evidence for several years. you touched on it there, but what will this mean for relationships on the hill between the democratic and republican members? they have to agree the funding bill to keep the lights on in the government. i am a member of the appropriations committee in the senate, and there's sharp contrast between the senate and the house, in the senate we passed all of our appropriation bills with broad bipartisan support. in the house they have accomplished that the accomplished that for none of their bills. this week, the senate are taking up three of our most important bills and we will pass them out of the senate. the house will not do that for any of their bills. frankly we should be building a bipartisan consensus, passing the essential spending bill

perspective on the potential impeachment inquiry it was senate republicans, some of them saying her house gop doesn't appear to have enough evidence to pursue those proceedings against president biden. among them is john cornyn, or publican of texas he said this on the hill in interview. it really comes to how we prioritize the time. i don't know anyone who believes chuck schumer will take it up and actually have a trial and convicted sitting president said senator cornyn. noted that house republicans could investigate without launching a formal impeachment inquiry because they control the local chamber. they got the chairman of the various committees, they can do that without a formal inquiry. members of the house don't care what i think but it's unlikely in the senate. that's from one of the members of the senate, john cornyn of texas when it comes to impeachment. chuck schumer on the floor yesterday talking about the potential shutdown and his message to republicans. here's a portion of that.
