pippa, why now? >> we finally have reached the november 2022 level that was acting as a distance, now the highest point back to august 2022. this is all about inventories out of curbing, oklahoma, the key energy storage hub, and delivery for the contract. so we got data from eia that shows inventories are now at the lowest there in 14 months, just around 22 million barrels. that's important. once they get until 20 million, we start to approach tank bottoms. that's when we get quality issues, and pressures with the oil. think about water sediment going to the bottom. now there's more than a $10 spread between the december '23 and december '24 contract. so basically, combined with higher rates s. why would you want to store anything? all about oil -- >> you sell it, right? >> exactly. there is a $10 spread. that's a widely watch spread. nobody wants to store, so that is would we're seeing lower inventories. that's what pressuring the contract today. >> so if we drop below that 20 million barrel that yo

joining us is our own pippa stevens. they also make the point that the equities haven't kept pace with what commodities have done. >> that's right. we've seen a decoupling how energy equities and oil itself have performed. when you look year-to-date that doesn't tell the whole story. last year we saw outperformance from the with equities while oil lagged. you do have to pick your starting day when you look at how they perform. jpmorgan is saying that underinvestment means we'll see massive supply deficit in coming years through 2030. essentially in prior decades, money was cheap and there was momentum behind hydrocarbons so capital was flowing into the space. they were seeing new production. that is no longer true. they say that is lifting the tail end of the curve, meaning future prices north of $80, they see it stabilizing around $100 per barrel but we could get up to $150 per barrel. also opec is playing an ever more important role here. what jpmorgan says is saudi arabia essenpecially is going t try to manage prices

pippa stevens looking for the reason for that decoupling. >> energy stocks are up 10%, but oil itselfning near 30%. so, this divergence is thanks in part to the shape of the futures curve, according to third bridges' peter income naturally. spot prices above futures prices, we aren't seeing earnings estimates revised there are still a lot of unknowns, especially on the supply side. saudi arabia has signaled it will keep a floor under prices but they could reverse that at any point. while u.s. majors have kept production levels steady, we could see the private players come back into the market in a big way. and so all of that can deter generalist investors, especially after energy stocks outperformed for the last two years still the group's valuation at 11.7 times forward earnings is cheaper than the 20-year average of 15.2 times. energy is also cheaper than the overall s&p, which trades at 18.1 times forward earnings. looking ahead, analysts say to focus on companies with specific catalysts. so, goldman pointed to names like chevron, phillips 66 and baker hughes jpmorgan also favoring

pippa stevens has the details. >> it was a very big week for energy complex broadly.tarting with oil, with brent topping $90 for the first time this year. after saudi arabia extended its 1 million per day production cut through the end of the year with russia also curbing exports. nat gas, though, falling this week as we enter a seasonally lower demand period. energy stocks following oil higher, gaining 4% this week. refiners, a bright spot with marathon touching a record high today. philips 66 is at a five-year high. a different story for clean energy. the icln, which tracks the space, sank to a three-year low today. higher rates is hitting every part of the ecosystem with each vertical, solar, wind, and hydrogen facing its own problems including supply chain delays and lack of clarity around tax credits. a lot of red there on the clean energy side. >> i'm not going to dwell. i'll save it for the next week on the wind front. thank you very much. >> let's get over to kristina partsinevelos now for the cnbc news update. >> well, ukrainian officials say at least four pe

pippa stevens has more. >> and so there is one notable exception and that is the refiners.sia which is that they are banning diesel and gasoline exports indefinitely. so they are a major player in the global energy market here. so before the invasion, they exare the forred about 2.8 million peribarrels per day. so sizable. and of course they are a key supplier to europe. in europe we saw gas oil futures jump above the $1,000 per ton level. here in the u.s. heating oil futures are higher. and so russia says that this is all about stabilizing prices domestically. but you know, we have to look at the country's prior actions and it was just about a year ago when they started slowly cutting off supplies of nat gas before the pipeline was then blown up. and so as one person said, naive to think that putin wouldn't be trying to inflict pain on the west ahead of winter. so this is one of the levers that they still have to pull since they are still a global player in diesel. >> so they are stopping the export, but let's talk about the u.s. production and where it stands today. as i

pippa stevens here to explain. >> this is the first time wti has topped the 90 level since last novembernt crude around 93. 72 right now. this comes after the latest reports from the iea and opec said we would see supply deficits through the remainder of the year. we have this tightening physical market supported by strong demand as well as saudi arabia signaling they will do what it takes to keep the floor under prices. on the flip side you could argue this tightening market has been very well telegraphed and the run up in oil is priced in and oil is over bought for the first time in a year and a half, so it really does speak to just how quickly the sentiment has shifted from very negative to maybe perhaps a little bit too positive here. now energy stocks are higher. one area to watch is the services names because with wti at the $90s level we could see the private players bring production back on line and they're about half of the rate count. it's a meaningful statistic to watch. clean energy stocks also higher today. just got back from the conference in vegas the largest clean energy
