charlie d'agata is in tel aviv with more. good evening. >> reporter: good evening, jericka. tonight, israeli forces are on the attack and on the move inside gaza, saying more troops have entered the territory while the humanitarian crisis inside gaza is worsening by the minute. the israeli defense forces said they struck more than 450 hamas targets in a 24-hour period. releasing new night time video, claiming to show israeli tanks advancing inside gaza. flanked by infantry soldiers on foot. taking up positions under the cover of darkness and smoke screens. hamas has reported firefights and released video purporting to show a missile attack on an israeli troop carrier. while aid agencies describe the toll on civilians as a catastrophic crisis. the u.n. has warned after break down of civil order, saying hundreds of people have stormed their warehouses in a desperate search for food and basic supplies. large parts of the territory even cut off from communications, but cbs news producer managed to report today scene of despair and utter desolation. >> while i was driving in gaza

. >> i also want to bring in cbs news senior foreign correspondent charlie d'agata, who is life for us in tel aviv. charlie, bring us up to date on what is happening on the ground, there. >> reporter: they would have been watching very closely, here in tel aviv, in jerusalem and from because of what has happened since president biden was here. israeli forces are gearing up for what we believe will be a ground offensive. these troops were told they will now see god from the inside. but there ourselves to watch israeli forces training for what is about to come. there is a sense, here, that is really forces are gearing up for some kind of ground incursion. at the same time, there has been outrage, partly over what happens at the hospital in gaza and the explanations and controversy that has gone both ways. regardless, the israelis are saying that it was "islamic jihad" that was responsible for the explosion at the hospital, but that is to one side. what it has done is inflamed the entire region. there have been demonstrations in egypt, there have been demonstrations in jordan, around thes

we begin this morning in tel aviv with our charlie d'agata. >> reporter: what the israeli government its second stage of the war began with its fiercest arielle onslaught yet. then an artillery barrage according to israeli defense forces video and tanks, flanked by soldiers on foot rolling inside gaza without pulling back this time. even if israeli officials stopped short calling it an invasion. prime minister benjamin netanyahu called it israel's second war of independence. the war inside the gaza strip will be long and difficult, he said, and we are ready for it. addressing what aid agencies call the catastrophic crisis unfolding inside gaza constitutes a war crime he said -- the idf is the most moral army in the world. the idf does everything to avoid harming those who are not involved. but each air strike and artillery shell brings more death and destruction for more than 2 million people with nearly nowhere to take shelter. the hamas-run health ministry now says more than 8,000 people have been killed, around half of them children. a mother mourns, saying, leave him in my arms.
