back with us is mike memoli. mike, did he accomplish what he set out to do?reporter: well, i think the campaign certainly views this as an important moment, katy. i have to say as someone who's followed joe biden for 15 years, i think i heard the words donald trump more in this 20-minute speech than we heard on camera from this president in all of 2023 and maybe for all of his term in office so far. you mentioned the laundry list of daily trump outrages that have been in the news, that have been -- many of the questions we have posed to president biden, trying to get his responses to them on a daily basis. on a regular basis, the president has chosen not to. he's tried to focus over the last seven months on issues like the economy. but the biggest strategic difference in the way that the biden team views this election and views politics is that you can't get into a fight. you know this, katy, perhaps as well as anybody, with donald trump on a daily basis, without sacrificing your ability to set your own agenda. so this does represent what the campaign says is

joining me now, mike memoli, who is in portsmith, new hampshire, and monica alba who is in virginia. es counted? is there a point to them? >> reporter: well, let's start with that question. i just heard from a dnc official who said new hampshire does have ten delegates to the national convention. according to the dnc, none will be awarded based on what happens here today. we know that democrats are very concerned about whether president biden is still the strongest candidate to put forward today. today is the first test of that strength. you have the write-in effort doing their best to turn out the vote. the question is, how will they count the vote? this is portsmith, one of the more heavily democratic parts of the state. poll workers are expecting more manpower to help count the votes. i spoke with the secretary of state who talked about what this will look like. >> i think the results will come in relatively quickly. there's over 100 towns in new hampshire that hand count. that's a sort and stack method. there will be no difference there. in the towns like portsmith where they have

nbc's mike memoli is in south carolina traveling with vice president harris. t and former senior aide on the biden harris campaign, adrienne elrod. mike, tell us more about these fundraising numbers. >> reporter: chris, i have been hearing from some sources for a few weeks now that the biden campaign felt like they were going to beat their own expectations as to how much money they raised at the end of 2023, and what better day to make it official when the republicans are starting their nomination process. $97 million raised in the final three months of 2023. that's an improvement on 71 million, 72 million that they raised in the two previous quarters. bigger, $117 million. that's how much the biden campaign has in the bank to start the year 2024. to put that in perspective, the campaign says, look, the republicans in iowa have spent $100 million combined on the air waves, just trying to get out the caucus votes for tonight. that's a significant advantage or the incumbent as we start this year. if you look under the hood of the numbers they're talking about, es

nbc's mike memoli is outside that courthouse in los angeles where we'll see hunter biden there in just. also with us carol lam, former federal prosecutor and msnbc legal analyst. so mike, talk to us about what we can expect today there in los angeles and the allegations at the heart of this indictment. >> reporter: well, ana, certainly we won't see the kind of fireworks we saw on capitol hill yesterday. i say that advisedly, what we expect to be a fairly routine hearing today later this afternoon is the consequence of that failed plea agreement that fell apart last summer. this is the second now indictment that the president's son is pleading we expect not guilty to today. as a result of the collapse of that plea agreement. this all has to do with conduct during a very dark period from his life from 2016 to 2019, hunter biden accused of not paying taxes on his income and failure to report those taxes. now, what hunter biden's legal team is arguing here is not necessarily the facts here but that the prosecution itself is what they call selective and vindictive. they're arguing that what

joining us now, nbc news white house correspondent mike memoli.political court, if you will, in congress. today he's in front of a judge. what's going to happen? >> reporter: yeah, katy, it was quite the coast-to-coast adventure we're on here. and it is an interesting hearing, should be underway shortly. should be fairly routine. there are nine charges, failure to file, failure to pay taxes, misdemeanors, but also the felony charges of filing a false return and tax evasion. we expect hunter biden to plead not guilty to the charges and the argument is going to be essentially this, yes, he has acknowledged his wrong doing. he has paid back the taxes that were owed but that this is part of an overzealous prosecution. the federal prosecutor, david weiss who has faced political pressure from republicans and is bringing charges that would not otherwise be brought if his last name were not hunter biden. during this proceeding, we will hear the charges be read, they will ask hunter for his plea, and there may be motions and discussion about a potential tr

joining us now is nbc's mike memoli outside the courthouse in los angeles, also back with us, msnbc'shang. mike, how are we expecting today's court appearance to unfold? >> reporter: well, jose, we expected proceedings to be fairly routine and fairly brief. we will see the magistrate judge in this case ask the prosecutors to once again read through those nine charges including the felonies of tax evasion and failing to -- filing a false report, excuse me. and then ask hunter biden, the son of the president of the united states to enter in his plea, which we expect will be not guilty. we say we expect this to be routine, but, remember, this set of charges is the second to come as a result of that failed plea agreement that we saw last summer in delaware. this is an argument that we expect to hear from hunter biden's lawyers today, which is that, yes, hunter biden acknowledged his wrongdoing here, failing to pay up to $1.4 million in taxes over a period from 2016 to 2019, but he has now since paid back what he owes, he accepted responsibility. and that he's really only here now because

mike memoli joins us from portsmith, new hampshire. how does this write-in campaign work?s going to be and what might happen in terms of that write-in vote. i'm here in one of the most heavily democratic polling places in the state where there is a significant number of undeclared voters. i want to bring in margie. when an undeclared voter wants to pick which party they want to vote in, they tell her which party they want to go to. you have been keeping an informal track of which party is more interest from undeclared voters. what have you found? >> nearly all of the people have taken republican ballot and then switched back to undeclared. >> reporter: is that surprising? this is democratic heavy. >> not surprising. the republican race has more activity this year. >> reporter: you looked at that piece of paper. you have one democratic undeclared so far today. almost all republican. >> yes. >> reporter: thanks. let's talk about what the process looks like for the voters here. when you come in, there are two options. new hampshire allows you to register the same day of elect

joining us now, nbc news pentagon correspondent and traveling with the president in miami is mike memoli. all right, so courtney, the president says he's made a decision. what do we know about what the pentagon proposed for him? >> we know that it was a wide range of options here. there have been several times in the past several months in fact where there have been attacks by these iranian backed groups that have yielded american injuries including one where one u.s. service member was seriously wounded and medevaced out. in those cases, the u.s. has responded with very targeted air strikes. so, for instance, if it's an attack by a drone, they'll go after a warehouse where some of these groups store their drones or put them together. sometimes they'll go after launchers as we've seen with the houthis in yemen. what's different about this is this is the first time americans were killed in this recent back and forth. officials are saying this response will look and feel different. we should think of something that will be larger in scale and it will send a little bit of, it will send a st

joining us now, mike memoli. you're in my favorite town in all of that state. i love portsmouth. a nice time. tell me what you're hearing about the write-in campaign and whether the biden campaign, the democrat, think that maybe it wasn't such a good idea to move the first primary to south carolina? >> well, it's so interesting because when the filing period here closed and president biden wasn't one of those 21 democrats who filed for the ballot, there wasn't an organized write-in campaign. so everything we've seen, the house parties, the volunteer efforts we've been tracking all weekend has been really just in the last two months. the organizers feel really good. we've been talking to some voters who have gotten mailers from the campaign. they've gotten texts and phone calls so they are getting the vote out, but it's going to be so interesting as we watch the numbers tonight and potentially see the republican race called early, whether the vote comes in for the president. whether it's strong enough to dispel those doubts democrats have about biden's political strength. this is
