wind in the forecast, will the planned power outages that pg and e began overnight are set to last well into tomorrow? i want you to take a look now at the current pg and e outage map. now all of these purple triangles that you see and there are a lot of them. well, they represent a planned power shut off. and you can see the outages. they really span across a large part of northern california. so about 21,300 customers were affected. but another 31,000 unexpectedly lost power due to falling trees and branches. and while the planned outages are designed to help prevent wildfires. well, residents often say it becomes frustrating with the outages sometimes lasting hours. if not days. >> i mean, we go through this, you know, every year there are 1 or 2 power outages and very little progress appears to be being made. >> i think there could be a more effective process. it would be definitely helpful, more helpful if they did like extend and have like a better idea of the amount of time that they would need a pg. >> and e says the reason the outages last so long sometimes is that once the wind finally does die down, well, utili

a chance for some rain out there in the long range. >> thanks, bill. well, the planned power outages that pg and e began overnight will last well into tomorrow as windy conditionsted to continue. taking a look at the current outages across the bay area, all those purple triangles you see there on the screen represent a planned power shut off. but there are also some power outages that were not planned but happened because strong winds knocking out power lines. ktvu tom vacar shows us how some customers in the oakland hills are faring. >> planned power outages are designed to stop wildfires, but one of the problems is thousands and thousands of folks have to go through this, and that could last for hours, if not days. the windy weather that led to planned outages also racked up a slew of weather caused outages in pg, and e's vast service area. planned outages peaked at 21,300 customers. steve plevin, who lives in the pinewood neighborhood of the oakland hills, is one of the many warned well in advance that outages were likely. >> the initial notice did tell us we'd have no power all day today, all night, and until sometime tomorrow. >> the real surprise came to

a red flag warning remains in effect through tomorrow morning. however, we do have some welcome news for 12,000 pg&e customers who had their power cut today because of fire risk utility. now working to restore power and expects to have the lights back on for some customers within the hour. pg&e says the winds are not as strong as they had anticipated. however, that red flag is still in effect as we just mentioned, so we want to bring in our meteorologist, vianey arana, tracking the winds. tell us a little more about the areas that are still at risk. well, you know, even though we're going to start to notice the winds backing off, we're very dry. and this is a key element in that red flag warning. and right now it's still will remain in effect until 7 a.m. tomorrow. for the highlighted areas, i also want to point out that in addition to northern california, we've also got southern california under that red flag warning. and unfortunately, we do have active fires burning down there with gusty conditions as well. so here's what we're going to expect in the next couple of hours. if you notice all of the
