it was a ghost town in chinatown. i figured it's time to shoot chinatown store front nobody. everybody on grand avenue. there was not a soul out walking around chinatown. a new asia restaurant, it used to be the biggest restaurant in chinatown. it can hold about a 1,000 people and i had been shooting events there for many years. it turned into a supermarket. and i got in. i shot the supermarket. you know, and its transformation. even the owner of the restaurant the restaurant, it's 50 years old. i said, yeah. it looks awful. history. because i'm shooting history. and it's impressive because it's history because you can't repeat. it's gone it's gone. >> you stick with her, she'll teach you everything. >> cellphone photography, that's going to be the generation. i think cellphones in the next two, three years, the big cameras are obsolete already. mirrorless camera is going to take over market and the cellphone is going to be better. but nobody's going to archive it. nobody's going to keep good history. everybody's going to take snapshots, but nobody's going to catalog. they do

two months ago, the cousins met for the first time at tam's gallery, opening in chinatown. six of us showed up and we all said, let's come on, let's go. we've got a cousin here. and he says, people, i've got relatives here. i have never known. i felt very close to them immediately because they were very warm. all three of them were on their own journey and doing their own research before finding each other. kimberly, she got ahold of me on facebook and said, i think our grandmothers were sisters. ho visited marysville, found out that my uncle frank kim was still here and living in stockton. so he emailed frank and then my uncle forwarded the email to me. there are puzzles and the puzzles come together, but when you find a piece that's a gem, it's like an archeological dig. what happened here is just unimaginable for me. and now i have like the whole family like tree. the original family tree was started by gordon chang, a stanford professor and another new cousin in tam's life. here's what those family trees look like now. there are so many names and so many like all these

born in chinatown, same as bruce lee, chinatown hospital.y family moved to the sunset in the late 70's, so my mom and dad thought, we are already doing construction, why don't we open a hardware store? it is nice dove tail to each other, so that is how that got started. we started this store in 1983, and we have been going every since, so now it is 40 years. i like serving my neighborhood. i fealt a hardware store is different from other businesses. most businesses you want to buy this or that and eat this or that. a hardware store is different. people come in and usually have a problem and need a solution and looking for you to navigate them through that problem and offer them products that help them get to where they need to go. the people are great. i love this neighborhood. there is different etnisties and cultures here. we all intermingle and mix together and get along fine and i like that about this neighborhood t. is nice place to be. it is near the beach and beautiful and near the zoom and park and stern grove. great schools and park

i only spoke about them in whispers their big wigs in chinatown i did not evenn know what that meant started doing the research. i realized both sides of my family upstairs and downstairs neighbors from each other in that same apartment building. once i realize r that, i realizd there was a story there. part of the story was my trying to understand who i am or who i was in relation to the family members that people came before me. who they were in connection with each other. and again growing up i grew up a strange for my dad's side family i did not know in fact they had been neighbors, classmates at point in time they hated each other. and other times like my parents got together much of the families were interconnected that way in downtown chinatown also out in the jersey shore where they had homes. one of the reasons i worked on this book growing up not knowing this one side of my family i also grew up in this country and my fifth generation new yorker watching media the very few portrayals of chinese-americans and asian americans even in the free to you beat me at 1970s. the lead

it is considered the fourth chinatown in san francisco.idents are of chinese ancestry. the second unique, and fun aspect about this area is it is the garden district. there is a lot of urban agriculture and it was where the city grew the majority of the flowers. not only for san francisco but for the region. and of course, it is the location in mclaren park which is the city's second biggest park after golden gate. many people don't know the neighborhood in the first place if they haven't been there. we call it the best neighborhood nobody has ever heard our. every neighborhood in district nine has a very special aspect. where we are right now is the mission district. the mission district is a very special part of our city. you smell the tacos at the [speaking spanish] and they have the best latin pastries. they have these shortbread cookies with caramel in the middle. and then you walk further down and you have sunrise cafÉ. it is a place that you come for the incredible food, but also to learn about what is happening in the neighborhood
