cbs' nicole valdez joins us with the latest from new orleans. nicole, what's the mood like in the city this morning? >> reporter: michael, good morning. well, it's quiet. a much different environment here from the usually packed french quarter, just 24 hours ago or so, there were thousands of people celebrating the start of a new year here. now, this is the site where so many remember the carnage of the attack that killed 15 people and hurt nearly 40 others. right now, federal investigators called this attack deliberate, thought-out, and say they are investigating it as an act of terror. >> we have dozens of people that got hit by this car. >> reporter: frantic messages from first responders in new orleans, just moments after a man drove his truck through crowds celebrating the new year on the city's famed bourbon street. >> just heart this squeal. and, like, the rev of an engine and a huge, loud impact. and then, people screaming. >> reporter: the fbi has identified the attacker as 42-year-old army veteran shamsud din jabbar, a u.s. citizen tha

cbs' jarred hill joins us with the details. so can we get any sort of read on how president-elect donald trump feels about hegseth's chances? >> yeah. cbs news is learning that team trump is pretty confident in how hegseth did yesterday during that confirmation hearing. this one was often combative, but it didn't appear to raise flags for the republican senators that he'll need to vote for his confirmation as defense secretary. in fact, one skeptic turned into a supporter. >> i don't have a similar biography to defend secretaries of the last 30 years. >> reporter: before the senate armed services committee pete hegseth painted himself a change agent as president-elect donald trump's pick to head the department of defense. >> it is time to give someone with dust on his boots the helm. >> reporter: the iraq and afghanistan war vet stressed his focus would be on restoring a warrior mentality. republicans praised his experience on the battlefield. >> mr. hegseth will bring energy and fresh ideas to shake up the bureaucracy. >> repo

let's get the forecast now from cbs's lonnie quinn., lonnie, is there any relief in sight for the firefighters? >> you know, norah, yesterday when i was watching the spires spread, it was really because those winds had kicked in. also the drought had gotten worse, but look at the winds. we are seeing wind gusts 60-70 miles per hour. as you go through the overnight hours, those winds are still with us and the concern is still there about the fire spreading peer i will say this much: tomorrow morning they back down a little bit but you still season 40-50 mile-per-hour gusts. as you get to the afternoon, they all of those winds should dissipate, maybe 5-10 mile-per-hour winds, so that is a big to look forward to in the wind category. as far as the drought, i told you it actually got worse. look at what this that i stumbled across, the drought monitor from december, 30 days ago, so the severe extreme doubt was in and around las vegas. it wasn't even into the los angeles area, and yet, here we are, 30 days later, this was just issue today,

the "cbs evening news" starts now. ♪ ♪ good evening. norah o'donnell, and thank you for joining us. we want to begin tonight with news that the los angeles area does not need. there is a new wildfire that is tearing through the dry brush and it is 0% contained. it is called the hughes fire and it is burning fast, about 30 acres a minute, sending smoke and flames hundreds of feet into the air. now, evacuations have been ordered in several remote areas. this fire is burning in a mountainous region and is 1 of 6 fires burning in southern california. that includes the eaton and palisades fires that killed more than two dozen people and damaged or destroyed thousands of structures. and then, on top of that, there is rain in the forecast, and authorities are worried that could trigger mudslides. cbs's jonathan vigliotti leads us off from southern california. >> reporter: the crews right now are scrambled to contain these flames. they are trying to prevent this fire from jumping over the fire line. we have seen the wind really push this fire a

this is "cbs news mornings." fire threat high. winds intensify in los angeles spreading the danger of new wildfires as residents in the burn zone try to return home to see what if anything remains. >>> and city of angels. los angeles overflowing with kindness as volunteers turn out in droves to help those left with nothing. >>> good morning, i'm michael george. well, firefighters are racing to make progress against the wildfires still raging across the l.a. area before the powerful santa ana winds return. the national weather service issued red flag warnings for severe fire conditions through wednesday, with sustained winds of 50 miles per hour and gusts in the mountains reaching 70 miles per hour. tragically, the death toll is rising. at least 24 are dead, 16 remain missing at least, and more than 12,000 structures were damaged or destroyed. crews from california and nine other states are part of the ongoing response including newly arrived firefighters from mexico. there are three active wildfires, and as of yesterday morning th
