wind advisory goes into effect midnight tonight for the higher elevations of the bay area, not the valleys the coast. most of the bay area's population is excluded from the wind advisories because they wouldn't be as strong in the valleys. look at some of the forecast peak wind gusts, 28 miles an hour in san jose, half moon bay 44 miles an hour, but generally 25 to 35-mile-an-hour gusts on the high end of the spectrum. one of the exceptions, fairfield, up to a 48-mile-an-hour gust expected there, especially late in the day tomorrow. we'll keep an eye on all that through the next several days. what we really need is some rain. we won't see that anytime soon. let's look at the six to ten-day outlook. the longer these offshore winds persist, the longer we're rain-free, eventually our fire threat will go up. short term we're okay, but drier than normal conditions likely in the six to ten-day outlook and eight to 14-day outlook all the way to january 24th. i was looking at some of the really long range data and it's showing maybe we go through the rest of january without any rainfall. that's re

the rain shadow of the santa clara valley and the inland valleys of the east bay likely to be in effect. minimal rainfall totals there. the bulk of the rain is largely going to be concentrated over the heaviest rain, north bay through the duration of this first system. then there's going to be more headed our way as we look farther down the line. the best chance of rain is going to be monday into tuesday of next week. that's reflected in the six to ten- day outlook and the 8 to 14-day outlook, wetter than normal conditions throughout the first 10 or 11 days of february. this first one is only going to amount to a few hundredths of an inch of rain on the low end in the santa clara valley. some spots in the north bay close to an inch of rain through the weekend with more on top of that. we look farther down the line into next week. the rain chances re- enter the forecast as we head into the weekend and early next week. temperatures will go up and down a little bit. some of the warmest air will head our way, so we head into the weekend itself when we're dodging some of those showers. >>> b

now that includes the hurst fire, now threatening the san fernando valley and the surrounding area. this one started just before 1030 last night, so it hasn't been burning very long, but it forced 44,000 people from their homes. much of southern california, now under a state of emergency. the eaton fire is threatening pasadena and altadena, and that started about four hours earlier. a threat creating what cal fire calls an immediate threat to life. with people told to leave now, not to get ready, but to leave now. it all started with the palisades fire that you mentioned, which ripped through nearly 3000 acres from the pacific palisades, where it started. it is rugged terrain, and in one case, there's just one way into and out of the canyon there. police told people to leave their cars and to just get out on foot. those vehicles later shoved aside by a bulldozer trying to make way for fire crews. one man described the scene by phone to our sister station in la. palm trees near us started catching on fire, and then some flames came down the hill to the point where there may be like 1

as of january 1st, open agricultural burning is now banned in the san joaquin valley. te healthier air quality, but farmers say the cost is just too high. this stems from legislation first passed in 2003 phasing out ag burning and over the years farmers have been given more time to adjust. still they say this timing could not be worse. the grape growers association of lodi says that demand for wine grapes is down which means business is slow and this burn ban means farmers will have to use other methods to get rid of waste which could cost thousands more dollars. >> today what growers are facing is a much more convoluted process. as the burn ban takes effect january 1st, what they now are looking at is having to remove the wire, the steel, all the sort of tertiary things that come with a trellis vineyard and makes that process much more expensive. >> there is some help available. from here on out ag burning in the san joaquin valley is only allowed for rare exceptions with a permit, which includes disease prevention and clearing poisonous weeds. >>> we've been warning a
