so again, this one's in ventura county near oxnard. but it does look as they're starting to get a handle on some of those flames. but time you see something like this, i mean, over the last week now. yeah, yeah. i mean, obviously no idea of how this one started where it you can see dropping some there. thankfully, that means that the winds too strong for them to be able to do this. obviously. >> almost a week ago last tuesday night, those winds were too strong and fire crews could not get in the air so they could not fight the palisades or the even fire from the sky. but this one, it looks like they're able to get a better handle as he pans over. i think the fire was a little bit further to the right and they've been able to to start suppressing it. so we'll continue to check in on this throughout the night later this hour. and the 11 o'clock hour as well. tonight, 10's of thousands of people, though, are under evacuation orders because of fires down there in southern california. kron four's rob nesbitt has been talking with residents

so not only in los angeles and ventura counties. you can see even san diego, san diego area, saw some brush fires pop up as well. so read fly conditions throughout southern california until thursday and friday. we're talking winds coming from the northeast that classic santa ana wind direction, anywhere from 15 to 30 miles per hour. and gusts 50 to 65 miles per hour. it's really the dry conditions. the humidity levels down to 2% and 10%. so anything under that. and we're not even seeing a whole lot of recovery overnight like we normally see. so it's another long stretch of critical fire weather. not really for us because we've got all that rain other than at the next few hours for us here at home. we're talking 60's for daytime highs, but bundle up as you head towards the evening where we have another chilly night and morning ahead. back to you. thank you. other news now as part is the target of a new lawsuit. the transit agency is facing accusations. >> that it is unsafe and it fails to protect the public last year. a 74 year-old w

for most of los angeles and ventura counties, and for parts of san luis obispo and santa barbara counties. you see the alignment here with the circulation around that low pressure system literally pulling the winds from land to sea, offshore flow, which is the pattern that has held for several days now for about a week. in fact, right now we have gusts up to 35mph at camp nine, nearly 45mph at browns canyon. these wind gusts are irregular, though. i mean, they could be 15mph. one moment and the minute later 25 or 30mph. so the wind gusts, as you see going into the evening hours will diminish a bit. the red flag warning likely to expire at 6 p.m. and then going into the overnight hours, the winds remain still fairly strong, but not so gusty and so dangerous as they have been. this red flag warning once again in effect until 6 p.m. for this area shown here in red. particularly dangerous fire weather situation. relative humidity still dangerously low, about 8 to 15mph. now let's shift our focus here to the bay area. locally, we're looking at very calm conditions. wind speeds under ten miles

notice still looking at that la ventura county stretch 30 plus mile per hour winds. i'm going to advance this into the overnight early morning hours because i mentioned that we could see these wind gusts offshore kick up a notch again from the north northeast. and that's exactly what we're seeing. notice right around 5 a.m. look at this area. santa clarita, 50 plus thousand oaks, calabasas, right near where that fire is actively burning 61 mile per hour. wind gusts could be a possibility as we inch into that early friday morning. when do we see relief? well, let me move on over this way so i can show you that 5 p.m. hour is when we finally start to see some of those winds diminishing. but unfortunately, even though we're in a calm down into friday and saturday, it looks like we're on tap right now for a potential another wind event heading into sunday and into next week, but we'll keep you tapped in. i'll have a local look at your forecast coming up in a few minutes. okay. thank you. vianey. well, bay area technology helping to fight these wildfires down south. let's

one coordinator, i did request mutual aid from the 5 counties of los angeles, orange county ventura, santa barbara and san luis obispo counties yesterday. additionally last night i contacted the state office of emergency services requested 250 additional engine companies from northern california staffed with over 1000 personnel. at this time, the state of california, exercising their emergency compacts with the western states of arizona, nevada, utah, oregon and washington. 4 additional firefighting resources and personnel to come to los angeles county to assist us with this widespread fire emergency. one data point it's that we have 60 units responding from oregon. 45 units responding from washington. 10 units responding from new mexico. 15 units responding from utah and numerous units responding from arizona. currently the national weather service has predicted that this red flag warning will remain in effect for los angeles county and much of ventura county through friday. thank you. and i would now like to invite up to the podium, los angeles police chief jim mcdonald. thank you v

this is burning on the edge of los angeles and ventura counties, near west hills and calabasas. all right. let me give you a bird's eye view. now, of five fires burning in southern california. this map is by cal fire. the newest fire is the kenneth fire. that's the one we're talking about here. and it's spreading now to a thousand acres. so far, the biggest fire is the palisades fire. of course, that's what has grabbed so much attention. palisades just absolutely devastated and wiped out thousands of homes lost there. the deadliest fire. several people died. there is the eaton fire and near pasadena. then there is the hurst fire, which is near sylmar. let me show you where that is in southern california that's burned hundreds of acres there. and then the lydia fire, which is near acton. and there you see, it's much, much smaller, obviously, but still it's diverting resources for firefighters. that one there also burning several hundred acres. >> dan, thanks so much for that. today, local fire departments conducted two controlled burns. one was on mount tam in marin county, the o

monday through the middle of the week, as you could see why red flag warnings are in place for ventura county and los angeles county until wednesday. so here are the conditions around the 2 major fires out to dina on the east air. the eaton fire, the pacific palisades over on the west the humidity is quite try out to dina has now dropped to to 13% humidity. there is a breeze at 17 miles per hour. wind gusts coming from the north east and fame over by the pacific palisades. a calmer around los angeles, though. so really the now in areas and here's the wind forecast. we really see it pick up tonight and it will pick up again towards monday through wednesday. so here's the overnight rate here. this is around 11, 30 here. you can see the colors in the red and that's that the 30, 40 miles per hour winds. so when we're could see up to 40 miles per hour around the valleys. but then the it's not going to be as strong as it was with those 100 miles per hour. wind gusts. we're expecting to be up to 70 miles per hour. wind gusts in that now in areas back in the bay area. we are clear because we also hav

expanded to include much of the san fernando valley and into central and eastern sections of ventura county remember, the western l.a. county is where we have our palisades fire and our eaton fire. so this is a new area that we're keeping a very close eye on. and just to give you an idea of how rare these pds events are, they've only issued six in the past five years, four of which have been issued in the past three months. and we know what happened last week when they issued the particularly dangerous situation. the palisades fire exploded in size and caused the damage that you've seen on your tv screen. so the wind direction is so critical. and what's different about the forecast? we have had this northeasterly wind component for the past week or so, and now what we're noticing, it's subtle, but it's important that more east to northeasterly wind direction puts a new area at risk for the potential of rapid fire growth. remember, we need the ignition. so a spark has to happen. there are no current fires in ventura county, but the fact is it's a tinderbox. and where the winds are lining up,

it's a pds red flags situation, particularly dangerous situation throughout parts of ventura county and los angeles county. that's a red flag warning for many other areas. in fact, including now parts of san luis obispo county and santa barbara counties as well. so the concern is critic. it's critical fire danger because of very low relative humidities and very strong gusting winds in the count coast in the valleys. it can be 30 to 50 mile per hours winds, but it could be up to 70 mile per hour gusts through the mountain ranges. so as a real problem because these winds can be erratic, fires can exhibit erratic behavior. and part of that has to do is with the weather because, you know, you have a prevailing santa ana winds within a fire. you can get all kinds we get wind changes and that makes it really tough to fight a fire when all of a sudden it can turn and head toward you back to grant and vicki, thank you, kathy, our parent company nexstar is partnering with the red cross to raise money for the wildfire victims in southern california. >> you can just scan the qr code on your screen

warnings continue across many parts of southern california, especially. >> los angeles county and ventura county and also now in 2. >> parts of the san luis obispo county and santa barbara as well. it's a big problem. okay. we've high-risk areas. these areas. i have moderate chance, a very large continuing fires and rapid spread very erratic fire behavior. so these p d s red flag warnings, a particularly dangerous situation, that flag warnings, those go into effect tomorrow morning at 03:00am through 03:00pm because although the winds are fairly strong now they are going to strengthen even more. we will see 30 to 50 mile per hour gusts in some of the valley locations and some of the inland locations. but you go but above to the peak hills could be gusting up to 50 to 70 miles per hour. so it's critical fire weather conditions, extreme fire behavior is quite possible. and a skilled, of course, by the gusty santa ana winds as well as low relative humidities. so here the areas where the red flag warnings are in effect and you can see much of the southern california coastline is under those warnings

and ventura county, forcing evacuations. crews managed to stop its growth for now. >> i don't want people to start thinking everything is okay now. everything is not okay yet. the winds are blowing and it will continue to blow. >> reporter: but because city officials know just how quickly these fires can spread and how much devastation they can cause, they are warning residents to be prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice and to have a plan for their pets. >> if you're asked to evacuate, please listen to all evacuation orders as they are meant as a life saving measure. >> reporter: just a week ago, hundreds of residents from pasadena had area nursing homes and assisted living facilities were forced to flee as the eaton fire would threaten the region. >> this is our home. >> reporter: staff in pasadena would race to help seniors, carrying some on their backs. >> the elevators were out of order, so we had emergency stair chairs that the staff was able to use. we have had staff also had to carry our residents down. >> report

firefighters are battling a new fast moving fire burning in la and ventura counties. it sparked another round of evacuation orders and a closure of interstate five. this is called the hughes fire. started at around 1030 this morning in the hills near castaic, north of la and santa clarita. let's go and take a live look out there right now. this is from the ground. you see, right here we have a. that's a reporter you're seeing on the right. but behind her you could see all of those flames there. that heavy smoke. we're learning that this fire has grown to over 8000 acres with no containment right now. it is not threatening any structures. but nearly 20,000 people have been evacuated just over an hour ago, teams shut down both directions on i-5 through what's known as the grapevine. you're looking at video there. now look at all that smoke coming from there. this comes as crews continue to fight the palisades and eaton fires, all while dealing with red flag conditions. so let's go and bring in our meteorologist, vianey arana, with a closer look at those fire conditions.

the most recent fire is located in ventura county. the fire is 56 acres and 0% contained. the national weather service is using the rare, particularly dangerous situation described the wind event, expected this morning through noon on wednesday. nbc's jay gray live for us in pacific palisades. and, jay, what are the conditions like there right now? yeah, marcus, right now, thankfully, it's pretty calm. i mean, we'll get a gust every ce in a while and a sustained wind, but it's nowhere near ten miles an hour. now, we do expect that to change a bit, but in the higher elevations they are seeing more wind. you take a look. right now you can see it's not whipping up any of the real dust or ash here. so no severe winds at this point. but as you talk about forecasters warning that really from now through midday tomorrow, we could see very strong winds, i know that in los angeles county they've already measured gusts over 70 miles an hour in some areas. and so that's very concerning. you talked about the auto fire, which sparked overnight as a result of some of the changing condit

it's burning just off highway 101 near the la ventura county border. this is near the west hills and calabasas neighborhood. it started just before three this afternoon. it has exploded to almost 800 acres in just the past couple of hours. mandatory evacuations underway, and you could see flames very close in the homes in the way of the fire's path. now, winds are still at red flag levels. that red flag warning still in effect, but the gusts have been less intense. and firefighters are taking this opportunity to start working on containment lines for the eaton and palisades fire. both are still 0% contained, and together they have destroyed over 10,000 structures, mostly homes. video from pacific palisades shows a couple desperately trying to save their neighbor's house. she says water stopped running in their home as they were trying to put out the hot spot. we went inside the house and there is no water inside the house. we turn on the faucet. there's no water. there's no water into the yard, but there's one right here. it is underneath this shrub. i

. >> the newest fire is burning near oxnard in ventura county. this is being called the auto fire. it started around 8 p.m. an estimated 75 firefighters are battling these flames, both on the ground and in the air. now, the helicopter reporter for our sister station in los angeles says they have slowed the forward progress of the flames. this is burning in a riverbed, the santa clara river, near some golf courses. so the immediate area is not residential, but there is an evacuation order placed in place anyway. no structures are threatened. traffic on northbound 101 nearby is shut down with high winds tonight. these flames could spread quickly. >> all right, let's bring in the latest now on the weather forecast. meteorologist sandhya patel is here. with the current conditions and the red flag warning now in effect. sandhya. >> that's right. dan and ama, that area is under a red flag warning right now. so let's take a look at the conditions near the auto fire. it is 57 degrees. look at the relative humidity. it is so low 15%. easterly wind at 13. the gusts have been asnd high as 33
