and then we come to kansas. in 1855, 1854, actually, when the kansas act was passed, thousands of men on both sides of the issue into the state, into the future state, into the territory. and violence erupted. and that violence early on was mainly against pretty state men, pro-slavery men into kansas, saying that we have a right for kansas to be a slave you foreigners from east have no right to come here and tell us what we can do. and they were willing to do what had to to enforce that so that violence was was brutal, but it was mainly one on one or small groups on each other. not a battle any kind. not yet anyway. in may of 1854, the kansas arrest act was signed and. a few months later, five of john brown sons came out to kansas to settle and to vote for kansas to be a free state because it was supposed to be far as the federal government had said, a free and open election. and it was obviously not going to be that. so they asked, their father, to come out and help them. so he came out. he came and the violenc
