a follow up this morning out of vallejo.tudents at one school finally returning to class today, more than a week after copper thieves upended the daily routine, thieves last weekend stripped the wiring from critical power sources at solano deadmon leadership academy, classes were moved to other campuses until those repairs could be finished up. we spoke with the superintendent, who calls it a huge hit for the district and the children. we obviously don't know what people get from the wire when they take our wire and try to sell back to recycling centers. it's really a very small fraction of what it costs us to repair and replace. we, you know, the initial replacement of this campus was upwards of $140,000 to get our school back up and running. so, of course, you know, thieves are not going to ever see that that amount of money in doing this. it's sad that something like this is done to a school in general. he says factoring in other costs, the tab approaches a quarter million dollars and tells us police are still investigati

here's a look at the numbers right now 52 in livermore and vallejo, as well as san rafael, 54 in oakland a look outside emeryville sun coming up 713. light to moderate rain this morning. the heaviest batch of that will be from about 10:00 through 2:00 in the afternoon with the soaking rain, windy conditions and then sunday into next week, we're looking at more shower activity. much colder air will arrive and it's going to settle in really feeling like february. here's a look at 10:00, where you can see the heavier pockets from the north bay. the east bay is wet, the peninsula and then through about noontime. look at the heavy rain there over in oakland, the peninsula down around redwood city, still lighter showers in the south bay by 2:00. we've got scattered showers, the focus in the north bay, and by 7:00 there's a bit of a break. but then the rain comes back throughout your sunday. this is a level one system on sunday, so unfortunately it's not a dry day. we'll see the scattered showers. and then as this lifts to the north, it gives us a needed break because what's coming in later on

in 1976, there was a supreme court decision called buckley versus vallejo, in which the supreme court ruled that if billionaire owners want to buy politicians, they want to dump all kinds of money into politics and. keep in mind, this was right. this was the year after and two years after some really substantial federal legislation was passed to control money, politics, because, you know, there was the agnew bribery scandal. and then there the nixon bribery scandal. and, you know, we had some really good, good government laws passed in 74 and 75 and even early 76. and the supreme court basically struck down most of those. and the rationale that they used was to say that money that, you know, individual have the right to free speech guaranteed by the right by the first amendment, the constitution. but money is speech so you if they want to spend money, that's not bribery. that's not intervention in politics. free speech. lewis powell later wrote a memo a couple of years in 1971 arguing that this should be the case for corporations as well, that, you know, conservatives and republicans
