john king is at the magic wall. so, john, how can how are you able to, you know, judge to gauge how all of this is falling on the american public? >> well, aaron, a number of ways to look at it. so let's get straight to it. one of it is worse, the president's approval rating. and how does that relate to other presidents when they did this. not a state of the union. but in your first term, you get an address to the congress. well, president trump right now has a 48% approval rating. if you look, going back almost 45 years, 44 years for ronald reagan in 1981, that is the lowest number, except for donald trump in 2017. so donald trump, in his first term after the contested 2016 election and all of that, had a low standing. he's higher now. that's about what he got on election day, right? 49% of the national vote. he's at 48% now. i think it's safe to say presidents don't get a honeymoon like they used to anymore. we live in a very polarized country, so he hasn't slipped, but he hasn't grown in the 43 days since he's bee

john king, you've been around the block a few times. what do you make? >> the country is still very grumpy. the democrats lost the election, and donald trump won because the country wanted lower costs. the country is still dealing with a covid hangover. i think that we underestimate all the time about its impact on the country's mood. still. even now, still and donald trump, it's 43 days in. so it is not fair to say donald trump has failed to lower costs, but costs have not gone down. and he's the president right now. and so the country is still in a grumpy mood. and we see from our own polling, republicans are happy with him. democrats are unhappy with him. and a lot of voters in the middle are like, mr. president, we want to lower costs, fix the border. this other stuff. seems you seem to be doing a whole bunch of other things. could you stay over here? so i would just put it at that. we're 43 days in. let's see where we are at 100 days and then 200 days. but the country is cranky, just like it was in november. >> casey, what. >> do you think? >> yeah.

uh, and john king, president trump talks a lot about how high his approval rating is. and we know that in his speech tonight, he's going to talk about how great the right track, wrong track numbers are, how many, how many, the percentage of individuals who think the country is on the right track versus wrong track. those numbers were disastrous for president biden. and it is true that president trump is more popular right now than he ever was during his first term. um, but i think it. misdiagnoses the situation he's in to act as if his right track, wrong track numbers and his approval ratings are where he would want them to be. they're not. no. and in fact, most voters, according to lots of different polls that i've seen. and i'm sure you and casey and abby have seen, uh, don't think he has addressed inflation sufficiently. it's only been five weeks, but still don't think he's focused enough on inflation, which is what he promised he would do from day one. um, the majority of the public is still sympathetic to ukraine. the majority of republicans are still sympathetic
