and to talk more about the case of terry nichols. i can now welcome brandon buskie. he's the director of the seal. you criminal law reform project in new york city. mr. pesky, welcome. the death of terry nichols has painfully re ignited the discussion about police brutality and abuse of power in the united states. how deeply rooted is the problem within the police force. it is unfortunately extremely deeply rooted and goes back to the founding of this country. the use of slavery to subjugate black bodies. the use of protocol is forces to enforce those norms and make sure that there were slave patrols to return property back to masters is only carried through and to present a policing. and that is a major reason why. well, extraordinarily tragic, the involvement of black officers in some ways isn't surprising. and in many ways it shows the depth of systemic racism in this country. and how that lineage can be eliminated simply by diversifying police forces. it's gotta be a much more transformative approach in order to stop these kinds of tragedies. what, what made this

nichole: breaking news in texas. this man may have information regarding an ambush murder on a san antonio police officer. he was a 20 year veteran of the force. we have the clues investigators are following. reporter: investigators are combing through surveillance footage to try to find more images of that man and figure out where heas. they are also looking for the public to help them identify this man. he may have information about the murder of benjamin marconi who was shot during a traffic stop just beforeoon on sunday. the detective was a 20 year veteran of the force. he was in his cruiser writing a traffic ticket for a driver is he had pulled over when an unknown suspect possibly driving this car parked behind the cruiser and ambushed him. >> driver side door, he shot the dinner -- the detective striking him in the head. he then reached through the open window and fired a second shot ich also struck the detective in the head. reporter: police say this man they have the answers they are looking for. as for the

nichols. we understand and acknowledge the grief that the friends and family of tyre nichols are experiencing right now as well as the great concern throughout all of memphis and shelby county about this case. we met several times this week with the family of tyre nichols. they described an almost perfect son, a cheerful and happy person who enjoyed skateboarding and sunsets over shelby farms park. we're grateful to the family of tyre nichols for their patience as we expedited both the investigation and the consideration of charges in this case as well as the understanding on the part of the fa family, that premature release of the video could compromise both. and we did work quickly to expedite this investigation because of the extraordinary nature of the case compared to the average prosecution decisions in a case like this. we worked swiftly, but also fairly, and most importantly in a way calculated to ensure that we have a strong case. as you might have heard from ms. williams in this case

and that is exactly, that is exactly what mister nichols was trying to do. he was 80 yards away from his mother's house after getting this brutal beat down. so it's just no way that reforms are going to correct that. that's the culture that has been ingrained in the police departments for many, many years. and you just have to route out the officers like these 5 officers that were on the scene because i don't think any type of training. what type of training did you give a police officer to be humane to treat your fellow man like a human being? you don't need reform for that. yes, we do the reform, but you don't need reform to correct what happened in the case of mister nichols. ah, he craned then says the army needs up to 500 tanks to carry out a counter offensive against the russian troops. but let me, as the landscape says, the situation is critical in the region of easton don't yet as moscow step south attacks his russian forces, i'm not just targeting ukrainian positions, but they're also destroying the towns and villages around them. the netherlands, m

nichols. pepper spray was deployed. the suspect or not the suspect, mr. nichols, fled on foot. there was another altercation at a nearby location at which the serious injuries were experienced by mr. nichols. after some period of time, of waiting around afterwards, he was taken away by ambulance. beyond that i don't really think we should go into any further details. >> so what are those further details? and the officials here, the da certainly said he is going to let the video speak for itself. we just haven't had those details, the specifics of what happened. i thought it was also significant for him to talk about how it took some time for the medics to arrive, for the victim here to get the proper treatment. so we are starting to learn more but really authorities here are saying, look. we don't really want to talk about what exactly happened here and they really want to just allow the video to speak for itself. >> okay. well, obviously we are all bracing for that. in the meantime, john, we do have some police scanner audio. so this is right before we're told that the police

at that point, officers chase after nichols and later on when officers catch up to him, you see nichols on the ground as he's being restrained. multiple officers punch nichols several times and pepper stray him as they demand he give them his hands and all this happening as nichols calls out to his mother for help. >> mom! mom! mom! mom! reporter: despite the fact that officers appeared to already have hold of nichols arm the assault continues at one point you see the officer come and kick nichols in the head at least two times as if he was punting a football and then officers perceive to pass nichols around striking him with a baton and punching him in the face before he collapses and is later dragged and propped up against a police car for several minutes without having any aid rendered. it took more than 20 minutes for emts to bring a stretcher in so nickels can be taken to a hospital. this morning we were scheduled to sit down and talk with the lawyer representing former memphis officer desmond mills jr. who's one of the five officers charged with murdered nick nichols and that -- n

i want to remind people there is also tyre nichols. none of this will bring tyre nichols back.cess how it's been handled since won't do anything exactly for that family. but in terms of the timing of the police release and the charges and the video tomorrow night, how would you assess that? >> i think they've gone back and forth. i know they've gone back and forth on the dates and the consequencing between the announcement of the charges and the video. and i want was really the day before yesterday when they decided, you know, to celebrate them by 24 hours. i believe the rationale is let's get the charges to show people justice is being done. and then let's use the next 24 hours to try and do the community outbreak to get everybody on board with let the process go forward, and if you're going to protest, do so peacefully so, they can go into the weekend with some level of confidence they have a handle on it. that's interesting memphis seems to be very calm. other city, new york, l.a., chicago, los angeles also atlanta in particular also expect protests, and they're concerned ab

tonight they vote on tha new one, and we go to nichole vrsansky. what's the feeling on the latest offer? >> nichole: well, from what i heard last night from talking to support staff members at last night's school board meeting, this is going to be a close vote tonight. there is a very small pay increase in this deal, and insurance costs will also go up for spouses of these support staff members. a big turnout out here last night for the school board meeting for people to express concern and voice frustration with district leadership. financially, the westlake battle. the district is using reserves right now for spending. out in 2019. a level y hasn't passed since 2006. 86% of spending is on personnel, salary, insurance and retirement. tough times make for tough negotiations. the union president and the support staff union president saying these are the most heated negotiations in her 22 years at this post. even so, though, she think it's a good and fair deal. not everyone agrees. >> the board did make some movement, so we're hoping that this is som
