washington, cnn chief legal analyst laura coates, legal analyst carrie cordero, senior correspondent abby philipd former fbi deputy director andrew mccabe. thank you all for staying up late on this, another history making night. laura coates, i want to start with you. as you are sitting here sort of consuming all of this, i want to know what's going through your mind, given your legal background? >> well let's take a step back on the extraordinary nature of the fact that we have a former president being charged. but i'm not gonna get hung up on the fact that it's a former president. what i'm focused on is the conduct. that somebody previously had the authority to retain classified documents, as a person who had that legal 40, and doubled down and retained them according to what is presumed to be the willful retention of. them. there will be a lot of focus going forward on, what does that say about our country, other democracies of course have held their leaders to account. but what does it say about america to have this moment? what would it say about our country, if we allowed laws to go unchec

more perspective now -- joining me is our senior political correspondent abby philip, our senior political correspondent paula reid, chief national correspondent john king, and also washington post contributing columnist george conway, who has long predicted this moment would come to pass. but it's historic. >> -- >> face federal charges -- before >> it's absolutely -- this is one of the most -- most significant historically -- most historical -- i mean, important -- criminal case since the aaron burr case at the beginning of the 19th century when he -- this is stunning to see. it is breathtaking to see. but it's not surprising at all. the fact of the matter is -- and all trump is going to argue that he was mistreated and he is being singled out, and he is being abused, which >> -- >> the fact of the matter is, he's got the benefit of the doubt. if you, or any of us, at this table, had been a government official at the white house, during the trump administration, and we took these documents oh, man we joked around the national archives and records administration for a year and a half plus

alyssa, to abby philip point, he went as far as he's willing to go on trump. he went further today than he has in the past when he announced. and tonight, but he wouldn't answer dana's questions about a pardon or a number of other things. >> right, pence had some strong moments tonight. he had a line where he said that was a direct shot at trump. he said i know the difference between a genius and a war criminal, taking him on for refusing to call putin a war criminal. he talked about a meeting with vladimir putin. i was there when he did, indirectly concerning and what an -- election appearance. but the problem is trump looms large over the entire night. it was hard to look at what a future looking, you know, mike pence presents he would look like, because it kept coming back to, rightly so, january 6th, pardoning the former president. this is what he's gonna have to deal with on the campaign trail. i don't know if i've strong advice on how to avoid it, because the two are so inextricably tied. and i think for voters, the key thing he needs to do is draw a cle

. >> and abby philip. these are republican primary caucus voters. chris christie is a gun guy, chris christie's antiabortion. he didn't lean into either of those issues at all. if you were a pro gun or pro life voter he didn't give you a reason. he certainly didn't say anything that would make you think he wasn't on your side. but he wasn't very aggressive. >> it is an interesting point that on those, let's call them culture war issues. he didn't really lean in that much. but i did think it was notable that he was covering it trump from the right. he said trump didn't bring down the deficit. he said trump didn't bring in immigration bill to the floor. i think he understands that you do have to go through trump but you can't do it from the left. you can't even really do it from the center, you have to be somewhere to his right. and i did see him trying to make those arguments to republican voters that this guy is just not the conservative that you think he is. whether that will work as an argument i think it has not worked historically in a republica
