here's abc's steve osunsami. e is sharing tonight f that another of his deputies has died after police responded to this home. police were called to make a welfare check and were gunned down by a man inside on wednesday morning. >> got an officer shoate. >> reporter: they share they were called to the home just days before over issues with a 32-year-old they're now identifying as isaac barnes. >> he was waiting for the officers and we had an issue over the weekend. >> reporter: sergeant chris ward and deputy logan fox are dead. authorities say they were ambushed in a stairwell inside the home. there's now a growing memorial outside the sheriff's office. deputy fox was just 25 years old, sergeant ward was just 36 and a father of two who married his high school sweetheart. he died after being flown to the hospital. >> it's hard. god's got another angel. >> reporter: the standoff at the home lasted well into the night. when police were finally able to get in the home, they found the gunman, his mother and his step-f

abc 7 is trimming gavel to gavel coverage on our abc 7 connected tv at. >>> a homeless man is due backt today. a new video of one of these attacks is raising some questions about the case. these incidents happens march 17 near the un plaza in san francisco. the 39-year-old suspects public defender released to the new video and we want to warn you that this may be really hard to see. the public defenders office says it started with four unknown people beating his client, stephen jenkins. the defense says jenkins suffered 45 punches including some to his head. that left him injured and disoriented. video shows jenkins walking down market street and after being attacked again, he punches the 75-year-old woman. a security guard tackles jenkins and holds him until police get there. jenkins is charged with that attack and another -- earlier that same day. deputy public defender says the attacks against the asian seniors were not racially motivated. jenkins faces six counts of assault and battery and he is not charged with a hate crime. >>> a warning today about some verizon mobile hotspots c

abc's elizabeth schulze has more on how the cdc is responding. elizabeth, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, trevor. well, the cdc is warning about the spread of this uk variant believed to be at least 50% more contagious than previous strains of the virus and likely more deadly. new concerns this morning about that highly contagious uk variant, which the cdc now says is the most dominant strain of covid in the u.s. health experts fear it's helping fuel a fourth surge of the virus. >> if you add on the fact that we have loosening restrictions, more people traveling, young people spreading it an an even more contagious variant that's a setup for that. >> reporter: on the rise in at least 16 states. in michigan cases nearly tripling in the last three weeks. cdc teams now on the ground there. hospitals overwhelmed once again. nearly half of the nation's new covid cases are in just five states. many of the patients, younger people who have yet to be vaccinated. >> hospitals are seeing more and more younger adults. those in their 30s and 40s adm

here's abc's erielle reshef. >> reporter: tonight, fresh hope for millions of americans who have been fully vaccinated. the cdc saying they can safely travel again. >> fully vaccinated grandparents can fly to visit their healthy grandkids without getting a covid-19 test or self-quarantining, provided they follow the other recommended prevention measures while traveling. >> reporter: with precautions like wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and social distancing, travel for the fully vaccinated is now considered low risk based on real world studies. but the cdc says americans should still avoid non-essential travel, especially if you are unvaccinated. >> the science shows us that getting fully vaccinated allows you to do more things safely, and it's important for us to provide that guidance, even in the context of rising cases. >> reporter: and hospital admissions are now rising in 23 states too. deaths are climbing in 11 states. in the race to slow the spread, a new vaccine milestone. more than 100 million people have gotten at least one dose. still, the president urging americans to stay
