karen friedman agnifilo got to him and said, shut your mouth. no more outbursts, no more of that stuff you did the other day. and there's a couple reasons for that. number one, those outbursts can be used against him at trial. that video of him going in that you just showed john, that can be played if it's relevant to prove his motive or something along those lines. the other thing is, ultimately, if he gets convicted, if he takes a plea, if he gets convicted by a jury, the judge will be sentencing him and there will be some wiggle room, maybe, depending on how the conviction comes down, for the judge to think about things like, is this person remorseful? has this person accepted responsibility? that's way down the line. but generally you want your client, if you're a defense lawyer, to be on good behavior. so i assure you, we know karen has visited and spoken with her client. i promise you, she's a good defense lawyer. she told him, keep it quiet for now. >> yeah, i can't imagine his family is there. it's a media circus there. >> i mean, this i

and mangione shares an attorney because karen friedman agnifilo husband, marc agnifilo, is also working on this case. he was in court today and he's representing diddy, who has pleaded not guilty to those charges. jake. >> shimon, it was stunning to see the large security presence surrounding mangione when he arrived in new york. i mean, even new york city mayor adams was there for some reason. yeah i've never seen something like that. >> right? i've been covering crime here in new york city for probably over 20 years now. it was really striking to watch all of this unfold and the way in which it unfolded from an nypd plane being used to transport a prisoner who was being extradited to two nypd helicopters. right. they had two nypd helicopters waiting for him at the airport in long island, where the plane landed. and then they transported him to the heliport on wall street. and then we saw that long, long walk of mangione surrounded by nypd detectives, fbi agents. and then you saw the officers with the long guns, bulletproof vests, and just that large crowd of law enforcement officials

and according to our producer in there, she suggested karen agnifilo suggested that bragg's office. this is the district attorney of manhattan who brought those state charges that he may have not known that there were federal charges being brought against mangione. you know, we've been speaking all morning about just how unprecedented all of this has been. we all were gathered outside the state court, the media, because we were expecting that mangione would appear in state court. and then at the last minute, the fbi and the u.s. attorney's office here are announcing that they were taking custody of mangione. and now we're hearing from his attorney, mangione, his attorney, that she's seeking clarity about that. what what happened here? um, perhaps completely irrelevant, but we can already see her forming some kind of defense. you know, she's going to perhaps try to argue here. um, i'm just trying to see one other thing here. she's also saying that bragg, the manhattan da, didn't mention federal charges during his press conference. that's true. i was there, and so she wants clarity ab

what did karen friedman agnifilo say in court is the ping pong battle between. so this arraignment was supposed to happen friday. by then, he would have been booked through the normal process. he would have been brought to court. he would have been back in the cell block. he would have come into court from a side door and left the courtroom the same way. it would all be choreographed strictly as normal. in this case, the the federal authorities at the direction of the united states attorney body, snatched him before his arraignment in state court. they arraigned him in federal court on a complaint, not an indictment. they could have waited until after this whole process and then done the same thing. you'd have to ask them what the reasoning was to get ahead of it. but because of that, he's in federal custody now. so to be arraigned on this indictment, they had to get a writ from the judge saying, can we borrow him to let the wheels of justice turn on the state level? the feds had to say, you can have him for this period. and when you're done, bring him back. so

karen agnifilo is doing a terrific job doing what mr.didn't do while the case was pending in pennsylvania. to your point, great words, sara. he's she's humanizing him and making him realize that he's not the animal that some believe he is. and and ultimately she's going to go down that road of that mental defect, of that insanity defense. but one of the things she has to do, at least for now, is sort of rein things in and control what is being said. because if that message is wrong, you know, we forget this is brian thompson, this is a tragedy. but let's not lionize him. she doesn't want to lionize him. she really wants to deal with joel seidman, the prosecutor, and judge carroll right now in the state court, in that courtroom, the same way she'll do that in the federal court, regardless of the theory of being stalking or what, or this being some sort of terror act, which, again, i think is inappropriate and won't won't stand at the end of the day. but, you know, she's doing what she can with the tools that she has to make him look like

so his his newly hired lawyer here in manhattan, karen agnifilo karen friedman agnifilo, is telling us that he is not going to fight extradition. so it could be, jake, that on thursday we expect to see luigi mangione in court in pennsylvania on thursday on the case in pennsylvania and an extradition hearing that by thursday night, by thursday night, he could be in the hands of nypd detectives who would transport him back to manhattan, where he would be processed and then likely spent some time at rikers island before he is arraigned by a judge here in manhattan. and it's expected that he will be held awaiting trial. and also very significant that he is potentially now facing the rest of his life in prison. once he's convicted. obviously, a lot more to do. and, you know, for the defense team and for prosecutors. but the process will get underway once he's here in manhattan, and that can happen as soon as thursday. >> jake and stacy, your take on the extradition. does this new do these new charges, first murder and terrorism, does that change any of this? >> it really doesn't. what's goi

mangione's attorney karen ngfriedman agnifilo said this prosecution might have been overcharged in the state court and might also raise double jeopardy issues. that's the rule that you can't prosecute someone twice for the same crime. was the case overcharged? possibly. and because of that, the first degree murder charge in state ar court, the state is going to have to prove terrorism, which may sound easy given the terror that the shooter inflicted. but that is not a layup. terrorism is somewhat difficult to define. that might end up being a hang-up. >> here he is, in his orange jumpsuit, orange prison jumpsuit. we're seeing luigi mangione, this is the first time he has returned to new york since the crime of which he is accused and that is the murder of an insurance company executive. you can see that he has his hands cuffed. he comes here from blair county courthouse in holidaysburg, pennsylvania. in his appearance there, with his hlawyer, he was described attentive, animated, smiling, engaged, and it was there that he agreed ultimately to be extradited directly to new york. his law

he hired a new lawyer, karen friedman agnifilo, who floated a possible defense strategy during a recent tv appearance. >> there might be a not guilty by reason of insanity defense that they're going to be thinking about because the evidence is going to be so overwhelming that he did what he did. >> reporter: about two weeks before the murder, mangione's mother reported her son missing with san francisco police. once his face was flashed around the country on this wanted poster, they called new york. and when investigators spoke to mangione's mother, she told them the young man in the poster could be her son. he was arrested the next day when he was spotted at a mcdonald's. mangione has become a social media folk hero, alarming police. a threat assessment obtained by abc news says the narrative supporting his targeted attack likely served to encourage like-minded individuals. today, president trump said he couldn't believe there are fans. >> a terrible thing. cold blooded, cold blooded, horrible killing. how people can like this guy is -- that's a sickness, actually. >> reporter: and dav

i don't blame agnifilo for for raising this.his is something defense attorneys often do and should do. and you know, keep try to keep the publicity under control. what they are going to try to do is delay things. get this thing on a slower, you know, timeline so that they can study thousands of hours of, of video evidence, lots of forensic evidence, and also allow passions to cool around the case. you know, it is a classic strategy. the prosecution always wants to go right away. defense wants to delay here. given the magnitude of the evidence. prosecutor even said it in court. the defense is going to have very good reasons to delay this. as john said, for as much as a year, if not longer. >> it is interesting, though, that was it was not just the perp walk right where she was calling out eric adams. there was also another moment that i want to play that i think has stood out to a lot of us. >> your honor. the mayor should know more than anyone about the presumption of innocence that he, too, is afforded when he is dealing with h

mangione lawyer karen friedman agnifilo, told cnn her client is not going to fight extradition to new york from pennsylvania. how soon could mangione actually be sent to new york? and what happens next from there? >> well, they've got a hearing in pennsylvania on thursday. it's a status conference on his gun arrest when he was captured in that mcdonald's, which will be fairly pro forma. after that, they'll revisit the extradition. if he waives extradition right, then he could be back thursday night. he could be back friday or at the latest on monday. but new york city police detectives will be there standing by and be ready to take him. and then there will be a a hearing before a judge in new york on this indictment, i think from from his lawyers standpoint, his gun charge in pennsylvania, given these charges, really is the least of his problems. i think karen friedman agnifilo wants to get him here to new york so she can get him, you know, here, start working with him as a defendant and a lawyer. start looking at that discovery and start to deal with these charges as quickly as possi

being treated like a human ping pong ball between two warring jurisdictions attorney karen friedman agnifilo specifically calling out officials for that huge show of force last week when he was extradited from pennsylvania. >> upon his arrival in new york, calling it, quote, the biggest staged perp walk she has ever seen. cnn's kara scannell joining me now with more. so, kara, what more did we learn? what did we hear at this arraignment earlier today? >> so the arraignment itself was only about 20 minutes. and as you saw, luigi mangione was escorted into the courthouse with plainclothes officers on both sides of him, their arms interlocked with him as he was shackled at his wrists and at his ankles. now, inside the courtroom, there were four rows that were filled for the public. about roughly 30 members of the public, all relatively young, and the majority of them women, which is just interesting. no one said anything, of course, because the court officers keep a pretty strong hold on the decorum in the courtroom, especially in such a serious charge case. outside the courtroom, there were al

and before karen friedman agnifilo was hired as the attorney, she was on ac360, and she was saying she'd be worried about jury nullification. were she prosecuting the case, noting the, quote, outpouring of support and sympathy for mr. mangione. so talk to me about how, if you would be concerned about that and how these charges may be play there. >> well, i think one reason why this charge was brought is because it does sort of up the stakes in terms of the penalty that he's facing. he'd be facing mandatory life imprisonment on this terrorism first degree murder charge or second degree murder charge with the terrorism enhancement. and so by including that, the district attorney is setting up the conditions for a plea to a lesser charge, where he actually has the possibility of at some point getting out of prison. and so it could be a plea to that sort of regular second degree murder charge that doesn't have the terrorism enhancement. if there isn't a plea, it's also setting up the conditions for a jury compromise on that lesser charge. and so if there are people in the jury room who eithe
