let's start with julia ainsley. layout the time line for us. what was happening in june of 2017 around the time we now know that the president wanted to and tried to fire -- tried to order the firing of robert mueller? >> june of this year felt a lot like watching a car wreck for a lot of reporters. there was so much to keep up with at that time. if you can remember, it was just in may that trump had fired comey and robert mueller had been appointed. and in june during this month we're talking about, comey had testified before the senate and laid out in full the details of those conversations he had had with the president in which he was asked for his loyalty and to drop the investigation into trump's former national security adviser michael flynn. and later in june, it became known through media reports that mueller was looking in to possible obstruction of justice by the president himself. so all of this has really intensifying the pressure on the white house, intensifying pressure on donald trump who thought he might have been getting rid of

nbc news national security and justice reporter julia ainsley. wow, how does this happen?ou write about one particular example where -- and i'm quoted here -- a person given interim secret clearance in 2015 was discovered in 2017 to have been found guilty of raping a child prior -- that is the key word -- prior to applying for that clearance. how did they fall through the cracks? how is this possible being addressed. >> that is right. so on that one specific example they say one of the reasons that fell through the cracks is because it was later taken down to a misdemeanor rather than a felony but the state knew that but that didn't get communicated to the fbi. what this shows in a big picture sense is that the fbi is not able to really do an in-depth look at all of the people who need to be quickly vetted to get an in ishl security clearance, get through the door and do their until they later go back and see who you met with in foreign governments, anything in your past that may present a conflict of interest or other crimes you might have crimmed but n-- committed and th
