i believe in alaska. not only are we going to rebuild, we are going to rebuild with all alaskan materials, alaskan contractors, and alaskan labor. it is on track to open in time for tourist season this year. to energy and small business startups to large companies making significant new investment on the north slope, alaskans are committed to this state. they are making tough decisions and fighting for their future. they deserve leaders who are willing to do the same. alaskans, we are turning a page in history as we move into position to control our destiny. let me describe what controlling our destiny looks like. when alaska became a state, the alaska statehood compact established conditions for our entry. alaska was granted 103 million acres of public land and became the only state in america with exclusive ownership of the resources in the ground. the message from washington, d.c. to the new state was clear. alaska was to develop our mineral resources in order to establish a viable economy and support

as they run into each other, the pacific plate is denser so it dives under alaska or sub docs under alaska. those features typically curl -- create large earthquakes on occasion. the second largest earthquake ever recorded was in the gulf of alaska in 1964. those two earthquake seems to be quite different. it's not actually on the subduction zone, is further south than that and it's a strike slip rather than a thrust texan is on. -- mechanism. is mulligan earthquake you would get in california than like that giant 1964 earthquake we had a and alaska. >> how about aftershocks. should we worry about those? >> from the standpoint of ground motion, people in southern alaska will probably feel some aftershocks. the seismic alarms are constantly going off here in the center as the aftershocks occur. a 7.9, the biggest aftershocks are probably be a 6.9 and we should not have to worry about that from the standpoint of tsunami generation. also was far enough south that the seismic waves or the ground motions reduced by the aftershocks may be felt that they would not be big enough to do any damage.

so that's a concern for folks up in alaska. and when a magnitude of 7.9 happens, there's always the concern of tsunamis and the watches pretty much are automatically in effect because of the size of the earthquake. not necessarily because there is a tsunami threat. but here's what happens. this map kind of gives an idea of that ripple effect. when you see that earthquake now right there, where that star is, there is pretty much a ripple attack that occurs. three hours later, they expect it to hit the canada-u.s. border there. so woo may see a change in sea level. but right now, looks like it's not going to be a big one. and that, of course, is why that watch has been expired and canceled and not a concern anymore. so there is no immediate threat. but the ripples may continue to happen right along the coastline. so coming up, we'll have more around our local forecast. patchy fog out there this morning. may be impacting a lot of people's commute. let's send it over to michelle and kenny. >>> jaclyn is tracking what to expect out

this was about 280 miles southeast of kodak, alaska. it's just south of the alaska coastline here. here is where we get the concerns, though. this map is from the tsunami warning center and it shows the arrival times, how far the tsunami. we're waiting for confirmation on how big the tsunami is, where exactly it's located and how fast it's moving. this star here shows you where it occurred. this outer ring here is about a half hour ago, and that would be arriving in the pacific northwest possibly. it's not confirmed that anything horrible is going to happen there. obviously, the first areas that are going to be hit is right along the alaska coastline. that is only about 15 to 30 minutes after the initial earthquake took place. so what we have out there is we have these buoys that are sitting out in the ocean from the past tsunamis. these are our first warnings. we wait to see what the displacement of these buoys is, how high they rise with the waves to tell us what they have. and here is the concern. so this is the gulf of alaska here and this is one of our buoys out here. this one

in alaska to warn about the danger. look at this video. you can see cars lined up to evacuate the town of kodiak. >> a lot of change. >> there's a ripple effect, almost like you throw a pebble in the water and you see the ripple in the pond. that's basically what happens on a much larger scale. the earthquake happened and we have been looking throughout the morning hours for when it could reach our area. there were initial estimates of around 6:00 a.m., 6:15, it could hit the area of san francisco, the tsunami. but as kenny mentioned, the wash has been canceled. that is good news. but that's pretty much how it worked. the earthquake happened just south of kodiak, alaska. the way the waves of the tsunami ripple. could have breached the canada, u.s. border right there. and six hours later, head towards baja california. so this entire area has been under watch. so again, that is canceled. so that concern is now low long -- no longer for the west coast. hawaii had a warning and that was canceled as well. so that is great ne

so today i'd like to take you and others watching to alaska's interior to a town called fair banks, alaska -- fairbanks, alaska, where about 32,000 of my fellow alaskans live, a beautiful, wonderful place. fairbanks is hot in the center. my wife and i were married there many years ago, got over 90 degrees when we got married in august. but real cold in the winter. we spent the january 1, 2000, the millennium celebration in fairbanks with our kids, our family, 50 below zero without windchill. cold. it's a place that i love. where my wife was born and raised, where we live, where my in-laws still live and where jeff cook, our alaskan of the week, calls home. so jeff has been in fair banks his whole life. his parents moved to fairbanks in 1938. he went to college in oregon where his wife sue was there. but the couple moved back to alaska to fairbanks and started a family. he's now 74 years young and he and sue have four children, two of whom have settled in fairbanks, five grandchildren, and he's the patriarch of not only a great family but of many community organizations throughout fairbanks

it is what the senator from alaska talked about, only on a different issue. this dysfunction and failure here is way, way, way too deep. this bill also fails to fund community health centers, and i'm going tell you, i've talked to the administrators of the community health centers, these folks are sweating bullets. they're afraid they're going to have to close their facilities down. they provide primary health care to 100,000 folks. that might not sound like much, like many people, but in montana be, a state of just over 1 million folks, it is a big deal. these are essential facilities to our communities across montana. they provide basic help and they keep families alive. the folks that run these community health centers have told meifies face, if we don't get the funding, we're going to have to close the doors. it's about 111 days and we should have had a budget to fund the community health centers and we're still standing here today saying, guess what? we come back here in february, things going to be just fine, just like they said in december. i got news
