cruise to alcatraz island just took off a couple minutes ago. those folks who had their tickets in hand ahead of time were certainly glad they did. tomorrow could be too late if this government shutdown happens. i spoke with a spokesperson for the national parks service who told me that muir woods, 12 miles north of san francisco, would also be closed too, which is a huge tourist destination. alcatraz attracts about 5,000 visitors a day. the tickets are usually sold out weeks in advance. the spokesperson said they're waiting for direction from their washington, d.c., office, which gets their direction from the department of interior. for now, they get no preview. they wait along with everyone else for word. they would keep life saving operations and law enforcement in place. i spoke to a visitor from new orleans who booked weeks ago to alcatraz and tried to squeeze in a trip quickly for his wife's birthday. >> oh, it's great. it's something we've been wanting to see. glad we got the tickets and we can see it. >> we're actually not going anymore.
