joseph young from american university is here this morning to discuss that. welcome first of all. thanks for joining us and getting bright and early with us to discuss this milestone here. how has the death of al qaeda's top man impacted the organization? everybody says it's much weaker, including the president. what are your feelings about it. >> al qaeda is really three things. it's a group of affiliates and individuals. i think in materials of the core, it's -- terms of the core, it's been pretty devastating. for some of the individuals inspired by t he was much more of an inspirational figure than operational so it's had less impact. >> he was secluded in that bunker most of the time. >> it was low tech. i think it's had a smaller impact. >> one of the things we've heard recently is we knew there was a big cash of information that was garnered but they actually started detailing just how many commuters were coming out and -- computers were coming out and how many hard drives. does that translate into good intelligence have we learned? >> one thing we know we've gotten good inf

chen has been offered a fellowship from an american university. the chi geez government has indicated that it will accept mr. chen's application for prerpt travel documents. the united states government expects that the chinese government will expeditiously process his applications for these documents. now 11 days later, mr. chen is still in the same hospital room with his wife and two children under defacto house arrest. although mr. chen is under the impression that his application for a passport was made last when he was visited by a chinese official and under chinese law blind persons are supposed to be able to apply orally for travel documents, he has not been notified of any further action on the application. with can exception the half-hour each morning and a afternoon that the children are escorted outside by one of the nurse, he and and his family are not allowed to leave the hospital and no one is allowed to see them. anyone who attempts to see mr. chen risks severe retaliation. a lawyer attempted to visit mr. chen many the homt. he was
