i'm anderson cooper in for jake tapper.e're less than two hours from round two of the republican presidential debate. everyone will have to play by the rules. let's spell those out. david chalian is inside the debate halls where fiorina is heading. david, show us what the stage looks like. >> anderson, as you know, you're going to be able to feel the tension tonight. it's palpable. look at those podiums. they're so close together. what i'm fascinated by and what i'm going to be watching for tonight is to see how body language will sort of impact the debate itself. as you can see we've sort of put the candidates out in an array based on their polling. donald trump is center stage. he is at the top of the heap. and then it fans out from there as you go down the polls to the sides. so you've got chris christie and rand paul, the two lowest polling candidates in this tier at opposite ends of the stage. they also have no love loss for each other, so there's a lot of distance for them to sort of trade barbs at. unfortunately if y

jose anderson: you can't imagine the setting in these courtrooms.e a criminal case, you had shotgun-bearing sheriffs in the courthouse. you do have the threat that someone wants to kill one of the lawyers. so every time they approached the courtroom or made a legal argumet, they were in danger. he was almost tangibly subject to death everywhere he went. i mean everywhere he walked. juan williams: the judges chambers, the courtroom, the sheriffs office, the jail cell, down at a restaurant or down at a county meeting, or with a politiician, he was playing to win. and he was winning time and time again. rawn james: and he won cases against outstanding odds. and he saved lives. juan williams: and he develops a reputation in small communities that's really incredible. he becomes almost christ-like figure. salvation is going to come if we can just get lawyer marshall to come down here and argue with these southern sheriffs and these southern judges and these all-white juries. and if we can just get thurgood marshall. jose anderson: thurgood's coming! thur

stopped very early, anderson. we have got information from commander falenco in charge of this investigation. during the press conference he corrects hifl semself in the pr conference calling it a murder then saying "i'm sorry, a killing." then you have got the surveillance videos they were talking about. that were so important to this investigation that had the three people of interest in them. well, after looking through them, after the fbi pieced all these videos together they said they lacked ooked at the three individuals spoke to them and they're no longer persons of interest. so a lot of different details stand out, anderson because of the lack of details that we are getting from authorities in this particular case. >> just finally they have not, the coroner didn't say or specify how close the gun would have been to the officer when the shot was fired. correct? >> absolutely right. in this article, in the coroner talking to "the chicago tribune," it pretty much just says that, there was one devastating guns

anderson cooper is with us. an exciting moment, clearly, anderson.ringing the pope's staff, officials, media from jfk. u.s. marine corps but now waiting for the pope's helicopter to land. >> yeah, they are a little faster than the actual helicopter itself and rare to see it in new york when we saw them practicing, people were startled and pausing to take photographs and you also see the coast guard cutter there. they have basically shut down the waterways in this area and throughout much of manhattan, nypd, coast guard and other vessels patrolling the waterways and also have helicopters in the sky, new york police department helicopters, infrared capabilities, capabilities of testing for devices. they are taking this very seriously, indeed. probably the largest security operation the nypd says they have ever engaged in, at least in recent memory. >> i come every year for the u.n. general assembly. i don't remember security like this whole city block shut off. explain the symbolism in the fiat. >> well -- >> point out one helicopter looks like it's la

>> anderson, let me clarify a little bit what dave said. you have to -- we have to go through a checklist. we have to physically what we call shoot a bottle. there are bottles that we shoot or halon bottles that we activate in the cockpit that shoots fire retardant into that particular engine. in this particular case there's two on this engine. there's two fire retardant bottles that would shoot directly into the engine itself but it's not done automatically. however, the continuation of the fire may very well have been as a result of the brakes heating. we've got on that airplane, there's three -- excuse me, six wheels on each main gear truck, so it could have been -- it seems very black to me. it could have been rubber. those wheels will get heated very, very quickly in an aborted takeoff situation. you're dealing with a lot of energy. you're dealing with a 650,000 pound airplane potentially that has to come to a complete stop. so it could -- it possibly could have been related, the fire perpetuating could have been due to the wheels catc

it's very dangerous, anderson. i admire the pope's humbleness and not wanting to be seen ostentatiously but that's a very dangerous vehicle. god forbid there was a tactical assault, there's no way to negotiate strategically in that type of a vehicle. >> what's the biggest challenge facing the secret service and other agencies? is it the fact that this pope so often wants to get right up close to the crowds, he wants to mingle with people? you've seen videos in the past of people handing him a pizza, people handing him a drink to take a drink of. that's got it be a nightmare for secret service and the nypd. >> absolutely. the secret service grades its protectees. simply, low, medium, and high threat level. i would rate the pope as critical, a level above high. when you combine that with what he said, his randomness, his unpredictability, what you have to do -- let me give you a quick example. president obama got out and waved on the inauguration route in 2009 when it happened, we knew that was going to happen. we pu

anderson, it was desperation.nd i do think that there is beginning to be, the sort of sml of desperation and panic with a number of campaigns they just scant make any progress here. and they're trying to figure out if there is anything they can do in the way of a hail mary pass at this debate. to sort of, you know stop this. i'm not sure there is. there may be more than a few that will try. >> your candidate rand paul went after trump right out of the gate at the last debate doesn't necessarily seem to have helped him. how do you think candidates can go after donald trump if that's what they choose? is anything effective? >> well i think one of the lessons from the first debate is that donald trump is the jedi master of trolls. and the rule of trolling is you don't feed them. i think if everybody sort of sticks with their, their game plan, particularly rand paul who is a reformer, an authentic anti-establishment disrupter within the republican party, i think he needs to be himself and play his game and try as best
