cbs4's andrea flores joins us live tonight. andrea, he has ties to the denver area. >> reporter: karen, that's right. we know this much, friends tell is as you mentioned that he was a marine but was discharged and moved to colorado about five months ago. loved ones tell us that he was battling some demons and moved to the denver area to try and get some help. we're learning more about the man shot and killed by po they say he refused to drop a machete wednesday morning. friends say this man 28-year-old brandon simmons was an active marine for 10 years but was recently discharged. they say he was last stationed in san diego and spent time serving in iraq. his last facebook post early wednesday morning reads, i command you to stop eating creatures from the water. holding a machete and a cleaver. those closest to him say he may have been suffering from ptsd or depression. they tell cbs4 he grew up in and out of foster homes and shelters in texas. loved one's say he leaves behind two young kids. friends say he moved to colorado less

andrea flores starts our team coverage. andrea, more than 800 people were evacuated are now being allowed back home. >> reporter: that's right, and certainly some good news. now, we're in a subdivision area. go ahead and take a look. you can see squeeze are still packed along the side of the street. on the other side of the street, hopes in that evacuation area they cannot get to earlier today, many hiking through this field to get a closer look. now, the fire started at 10 acres around noon, but quickly grew to more than 200 by late afternoon, threatening structures in the chatfield estates and back country subdivisions. the douglas county sheriff's office issued an evacuation notice for residents living within a half center and back country neighborhood. that, of course, has since been lifted. here's what one evacuee had to say. >> i'm couldn't of freaking out, because i've got a couple windows open at the house, and got three cats, and so i'm just kind of worried about all the smoke. i've got a truck full of groceries, tr

andrea flores is in lyons now tonight. the town's mayor says a federal investigation is now underway. >> reporter: that's right, karen. residents here in lyons say they feel like they've been left in the dark. there's a lot of unanswered questions tonight including which federal agency is conducting this and why. residents tell us town administrator victoria simonson and town clerk deb anthony have both been placed on temporary paid administrative leave. last night mayor connie sullivan confirmed federal authorities were granted access to official documents related to flood recovery funds. the town was granted $36 million after severe floods tore through the area three years ago. audit by the department of comply with fema guidelines when contracting repairs and finished projects. without fema approval. unclear if the investigation is related to those findings while some residents are not surprised to learn about the investigations, others say they didn't see it coming. >> everything that's been done since the flood has be
