we're back with cnbc's andrew ross sorkin. andrew, a couple of issues to get to you with.our interview with ron klain. >> right. >> joe biden and many members of the cabinet hitting the road and doing events across the country to try and send out a message about the economy that gas prices are going down, the economy just grew, the inflation reduction act and many other things they have done are leading to better days ahead. will it resonate? what are other realities pertaining to this economy that could stump democrats? >> well, the sprint is clearly on and there's the argument made on your broadcast earlier about just, you know, whether the pivot talking about economy is too late at a time when the dwop spent a lot of time hammering this issue of inflation. i think they have a lot to crow about, the white house, that is, about where the growth numbers are at 2.6%. we talked about a release today on gdp. that's a very good number. the conundrum i think is that it's a theoretical number to most people, meaning ub say that and it's hard for people to feel that inflation has

joining us now, co-anchor of cnbc's "squawk box," andrew ross sorkin. yikes. >> yikes is right.ie dimon making some comments, and a lot of people listen to jamie when he speaks. right? >> yeah. >> a couple things to put in context. he's talking about potentially a couple thins, the recession which he says could be six to nine months away. he talks about the stock market, and you see that falling, he talked about it potentially falling another 20%, which of course would feel a lot worse than the 20% we've already fallen thus far. >> yeah. >> and so i think a lot of folks are saying what does this mean? jamie has tried to be -- i would say he's generally risk averse, has been a better sort of risk manager than most on wall street. so the question is how much to take away from that. we talked to ray last week and others and they're talking about the downside. nobody is talked about the upside. you could say if the conventional wisdom is all downside, maybe there is upside, but it's hard to see how this gets materially better anytime soon. >> reaching consensus with the guys where t

joining us now, to anchor of cnbc's "sqawk box," andrew ross sorkin.dashian is hardly alone among celebrities promoting specifically cryptocurrencies. we've seen the tv commercials and promoting it online. what are the implications of this settlement? >> i'm curious what you think about this. it's not that clear-cut. this was a shot across the bow by the s.e.c. using kim kardashian as an example, which of course is blanketing the air waichs and so many different newspapers this morning to effectively tell the influencer and actors and models and everybody else basically don't promote crypto and if you do, here are all the disclosure rules. however, there's a selective enforcement system going on. in her case as the report mentioned, here she is clearly putting #add on it. we can have a debate about whether crypto currency or she or anybody else should be promoting these things to begin with, but when you look at it, the intent was not to deceive people into believing that somehow it was not an advertisement, and the truth is so much of what we now see

andrew ross sorkin, i've got say, when you look at the risk politically that joe biden made to reach out to mbs, it's pretty shocking. >> right. >> even talking to officials in the middle east, telling me this doesn't make sense that biden had offered them a reasonable compromise and to do this as slap -- is a slap in the face to joe biden, especially since you have oil already at $90 today. it really is pretty extraordinary. this guy, i guess he's counting on the second donald trump term. >> it is fascinating because it's both political and economic. in the worst case, the saudis have clearly aligned themselves with the russians and effectively are willing to effectively help them over the united states. i think that's how a lot of people are viewing this. you know, if you were to talk to the folks in saudi or part of opec, they would say look at where the economy is, not just in the united states but globally. it's only going to get worse, and the reason we are going to cut back is because we think that actual through there's going to be less demand in the future. that's the econom

"squawk box" co-host previous inflation reports that ran hot tanked the market. what gives? >> i spent the day on the telephone with traders across wall street trying to figure out what gives and i think a lot of them still have their own questions about what gives there is a sense that if you want to be optimistic about it, this is the height, this is the peak of where those prices are and we're going to see those prices come down and come down quickly. that appears to be what the hope is that's also mixed with this. we're going to be getting earnings from a number of big banks that starts tomorrow we've already started to see some earnings come in and all of them look rather good. most say their business is quite good today they worry about what's coming next. the big question is what does j. powell at the federal reserve think of all this. most don't think he's going to change course. and for that, it's hard to really understand why we ended up the way we did today. >> i wondered i

joining us now on set, co-anchor of cnbc's squawkbox, our buddy, andrew ross sorkin.rew, what is a slight recession? how does wall street hear that? >> this is a little bit of semantics. some people would argue, we're already into a recession already. it's really about what a hard landing or a soft landing looks like. there's nobody on wall street today and maybe the conventional wisdom will prove to be. but there's a view that six to nine months, we talked about what jamie dimon said, that it's going to get tougher. the hard part for so many of the businesses that are out there is today, the businesses look fine. they look and they go, it doesn't look terrible today, but they think that it's going to get worse letter. pepsico came out with its numbers today and was able to pass on a lot of those costs to consumers. so, what does a slight recession look like? something that doesn't last too long and doesn't feel much worse than where we are right now. >> john, part of that comment is a political calculation. he doesn't want to concede, yes, we're diving into a recessi

i'm rebecca quick along with joe kernen and andrew ross sorkin. as joe mentioned, let's look at the equities at this hour. there are very strong gains building up. dow futures indicated up by 400 points s&p futures up 58. nasdaq up 225. this comes after the rally yesterday to kickoff the month and quarter. dow closing up 2.7%. it is back above 29,000. s&p also surging 2.6%. both indexes coming off the best single session since summer. you see a pull back in the yields the 10-year treasury is 3.6% it was above 4% last week. 3.58%. 2-year treasury at 4.01% all of the yeeields coming down. if we take a look at crude oil prices, oil is coming off the nearly 4% gain from yesterday. it is up again this morning by .60%. wti at $84.17. all of this ahead of the opec plus meeting in vienna all this in considering 1 million barrel cuts per day. we will have more on this later in the hour. >> a sickness? a great perversion and everybody thinks the economy is so sick and so awful and the fed has to realize and realize they made it so sick and make it less sick

i'm rebecca quick along with joe kernen and andrew ross sorkin. the nasdaq indicated off by 120 points as all of the big concerns of technology were large. yesterday after the bell and earnings the nasdaq off 120 s&p down 22. it was down yesterday, too the dow down 33. the dow was the big performer after the mixed close where the dow was up 195 points. all of the industrials performing this is in the words of jeff currie, the industrials have been strong and beating expectations and better than anybody had hoped for. the s&p yesterday was down by 0.6% the nasdaq off 1.6%. especially over what happened with meta platforms. if you look at the treasury yields, you see the 10-year treasury is yielding at 4% 4.01% right now. the 2-year treasury at 4.375%. we will hear from chevron and exxonmobil in the next half hour after the exxon report, we have the interview with the ceo darren woods at 7:30 eastern time industrials. on the data front, we get september personal income and spending at 8:30 a.m >>> let's talk about the big story of the morning maybe

i'm rebecca quick along with joe kernen and andrew ross sorkin. if you look at what is happening with the u.s. equities at this hour, we are looking at a little bit of pressure coming through this has been gradually decreasing, futures have, the last hour. dow futures off 125 points s&p down 13. nasdaq down by 17. of course, this comes after the major indices rose yesterday the dow was up 417 points. it closed at the highest level in six weeks s&p 500 up 1.2%. nasdaq up under 1% if you look at treasury yields which have been the important story. the one we have been watching closely for weeks. 10-year treasury has krcreeped p a little bit >>> new this morning, we have to talk about it. bloomberg reporting that adidas plans to end its partnership with kanye west. gap and balenciaga cut ties after the social media posts and interviews and all sorts of things he said ridiculous things. the shoe line accounts for 8% of the company's total sales. there has been an ongoing conversation the last two weeks of what will happen. >> he dared adidas he said t
