andy beshear is winning. he's even adding it's not done yet, but he's winning more counties now than he did. four years ago, which tells you as an incumbent governor in a tough climate that he's been able to sell the brand, that sell that message, that this is not about democrats or republicans. this is about getting through covid together. this is about building roads together. this is about dealing with disasters together as against a strong candidate, a guy who's he's won statewide. he's the attorney general, superstar republican. >> people have a lot of hopes and dreams for him, even if he does not win tonight. you're not you haven't heard the last of daniel cameron. let me ask you a question that we're going to hear from some biden supporting democrats tonight and tomorrow, assuming that andy beshear is lead holds, which is this andy beshear? do defying the biden drag or are we underestimating joe biden? i mean, i know what i think and i think i know what you think. but but there are going to be biden su

if you're andy beshear at the moment, you're happy. you also know you have a long way to go in a very, very competitive state. so if you're daniel cameron, what are the areas that you're looking for to drive up count? >> obviously, you want to eat into bashir's count in the population centers, but what are some places you really want to drive up your vote? >> so you pick a rural county here, right? you come out to the more rural areas, 30% of the vote in. so this we're having a hypothetical conversation. we need that number to get higher. but he's at 59% right there right now. and you see the number. there's an off year election. it's not going to match presidential turnout. but you want the juice this up. look at the presidential race in these counties when you come in here now right. donald trump gets 80, 81. right. daniel cameron needs to track trump. if andy beshear is running strong in fayette and jefferson in the democratic areas, and if he's close to where he was four years ago, even in the suburbs, then daniel cameron essential

>> well, i mean, certainly i have to say, i know andy beshear as well. have a lot of respect for the campaign they had. they did a good job and ran their plays. that's why he won. there are a number of things beyond the money. but the abortion issue i think did play a role. kentucky does have a restrictive law, but what we lack is the exceptions for rape and incest. that became a huge part of the beshear advertising campaign. and they stayed with it for two solid months or more on the air, and i just, you know, there's a lot of people that are strongly pro-life in kentucky and elsewhere who think we should have the exceptions. >> did daniel cameron acknowledge that last night? what was his kind of thought process watching those returns come in? >> look, he was -- there's a lot of issues that were on his mind last night and this morning, i saw before i flew up here today. i mean, he ran on mostly education and crime. beshear ran on mostly the abortion issue and economic development. so they both picked two different lanes. i think he's probably -- probabl

in kentucky, governor andy beshear has one reelection making him one of the few democratic leaders in red or predominantly republican states, and he made abortion rights a major issue in his campaign. in mississippi, cnn projects republican governor tate reeves has won a second term, defending brandon presley, the second cousin of rock legend elvis. in virginia, democrats have taken full control of the state legislatures, hanging on to the senate and flipping the house of delegates. abortion was not directly on the ballot, but was a motivating issue for democrats. in the key swing state of ohio, voters delivered a strong rebuke to republicans trying to restrict abortion access. the right to an abortion is now enshrined in the state constitution. ohio also voted to legalize recreational marijuana, becoming the 24th state to do so. well, more now on that historic abortion vote in ohio. cnn's kyung lah reports. >> reporter: abortion rights will be enshrined in ohio state constitution. that is the result here in ohio, according to cnn projections. it is the first republican state to take

and andy beshear beat his challenger. and one big cloud over democrats was another discouraging presidential poll, this one cnn's showing donald trump narrowly ahead of biden in a hypothetical rematch, 49% to 45% among those polled. while it is still early, trump also casting a shadow on the gop primary debate tonight as these five republicans take the stage in miami. you will notice not a single one is named trump because the former president is polling better than all of them combined. steve contorno is on the ground in miami for the debate and is joining us live. so we're down to five. much smaller graphic than in the previous few debates. but how is this field shrinking here and when you look at trump's continued absence, is that affecting the dynamics? >> reporter: to that point, omar, former president trump will be just down the road holding his own rally where he continues to do these counter programming events during the debates. but for those five on the stage, it is a smaller field and that gives them more space

camryn is winning the state by two to, one but here's the key, andy beshear is sitting at 32% was just about all the vote in in pulaski county. what did any beshear get in this county a 2019? he got 28%. that's the kind of improvement we are seeing for beshear in red county after it county as they reach this 95% threshold we're looking at. a much bigger county right here in the cincinnati suburb of boone county, where florence, kentucky's, about 96% of the vote, just about all of it is in. now again, this is a county that beshear lost in 2019, and daniel cameron, the republican, is going to win this county tonight. but beshear is sitting at 44%. what do you get 2019? 41%. so, again, not huge numbers, but it's a consistent pattern that is developing, where cameron, the republican, wanted to take the better numbers and improve on them and instead beshear is taking his numbers to move it up a few points, it seems, just about every county where we are seeing this level of vote return. the other thing that we are seeing is in some of these big population centers, core democratic areas, this

here is the thing, first off, comes to andy beshear. he did a good job.s the second most popular governor in america. besides governor of hawaii. he was a very, very popular guy. this is an extremely red state. it's not just that he did a good job, running against daniel cameron arguably is the most loathed candidate amongst black people since the first time donald trump ran. i cannot stress this enough. i talked to plenty of people in kentucky. that man has the blood of breonna taylor's hands -- her blood is on his hands. people remember that. black voters remembered that. daniel cameron couldn't run away from that. andy beshear, focussing on, hey, i've done a good job and running against someone seen as the lowest of the low by most black voters was a good combination. as far as glenn youngkin goes, you hear that sound. you hear that beeping, that's the truck, that's the bandwagon for glenn youngkin backing up away from iowa and every other place. glenn youngkin was looking too far away. i'll win these elections. i'll be the reverse to ray. i'm the guy

and andy beshear managed to win them. one thing to look at tonight is, you know, if any of this blue starts disappearing, there goes that beshear, that slight beshear margin from 2019. if he's able to add any blue to this map, puts it in a much better position. i think the big national question in this race is simply if the disdain in kentucky for the national democratic party and joe biden is so strong that it takes voters who otherwise like beshear and like the job he's done, and they vote republican anyway, that could speak to an energizing force for republicans that would give them hope heading into 2024. beshear were to hang on, that would be a sign of hope for democrats. it is similar in mississippi too by the way. tate reeves, not that popular, won by five points in 2019. again, he's relying on mississippi being a red state, not liking biden, not liking national democrats, and voters voting for the party and not the person. >> and you will obviously be monitoring all of this so closely. so, when we look at these two

you're hearing that from andy beshear's campaign and he just wrapped up an event here in lexington.sville tonight. big crowd here. he said he's feeling good. they feel like they're seeing positive indicators but the concern you have for his supporters is that you're hearing the same exact thing from daniel cameron and his campaign team and the energy that you're seeing on their side of it. the big issue here is whether or not a popular governor like andy beshear can overcome those negative national trends that you're seeing. president biden's low approval ratings, for example, whether or not a popular governor can overcome that, in a state that donald trump won by 26 points. you mentioned abortion is also a factor in this race. daniel cameron struggling to really lay out his abortion position until late into the campaign. bushear saying that he will protect or do what he can to protect or expand abortion access that folks have in kentucky. right now, there's a near total ban on the procedure. so lots of issues at play, but really this is a test of how a popular governor can perform

this is now going to be a five-point victory for andy beshear, a 70,000 vote margin. we improved in what we were talking about yesterday was that beshear had already in 2019 won and done well in some areas where democrats at the federal level, presidential candidates, don't. in 2020, joe biden had won two out of the 120 counties in kentucky. last night, andy beshear won 26 of the 120 counties in kentucky. i think what is most notable really is when you start to look at this portion of the state, the eastern part of the state, traditionally what has been coal country in kentucky, if you went back a generation or two, overwhelmingly democratic in these areas, but in the last 20 or so years, they have completely swung the other way at least in presidential elections and going republican. you're looking at counties, these blue counties that beshear won are counties where trump was getting 70, 75% of the vote in 2020 and yet beshear was able to win a whole bunch of them last night. so, he also got massive margins in core democratic areas, fayette county this is the second b
