good morning, ann. >> reporter: good morning, christina. this is where senator kennedy passed away late last night. sources close to the late senator say he was surrounded by his immediate family. they were at his bedside, including his wife, victoria, and his three children, teddy jr., cara and patrick kennedy of rhode island, and care can line and karen. the extended kennedy family, they came throughout early evening last night to be with the family as well. there's no word on funeral arrangements at this time. we expect perhaps we will hear something later today or tomorrow. but in a statement today, the kennedy family said in announcing the death of senator kennedy, that they had lost the irreplaceable center of their family. christina, back to you. >> all right, thank you. ann thompson joining us live from hyannisport this morning. thank you, ann. >>> a police chase in kentucky took a wrong turn for law enforcement. while responding to the pursuit of a suspect on foot, a sheriff in an suv crashed into a metro police officer's squad car

ann and matt, back to you. >> anne thompson, thank you so much. president obama who is spending the week on martha's vineyard spoke with senator kennedy's wife overnight. ron alan is covering the president's vacation. ron, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, ann. yes, president obama was informed the senator kennedy's passing around 2:00 a.m. this morning and he spoke with mrs. kennedy shortly thereafter. there had been a lot of speculation president obama was going to try and visit the kennedy compound but of course that was not meant to be. the president attributes much of his own success, in part, to the efforts of senator kennedy. his legislative efforts in the senate, his efforts for him on the campaign trail, and to a close personal relationship. the president's statement reads, in part, "i valued his wise counsel in the senate where regardless of the swirl of events he always had time for a new colleague. i cherished his confidence and momentous support in my race for the presidency. even as he waged a valiant struggle with a mortal il

>> reporter: ann, good evening. the government says 28-year-old albert gonzales and two others who are thought to be in or near russia used sophisticated techniques to get around network firewalls and steal those debit and credit card numbers from major retailers and other financial institutions. the hacking began back in october 2007. among the victims are heartland payment systems, the 7-eleven convenience store chain and hannaford brothers grocery store chain. the justice department said albert gonzales and his accomplices sent the stole an financial data to computer servers in california, illinois and overseas to lat ve yoo, the netherlands and ukraine with attempt to sell the data. interestingly in 2004, gonzales worked as a government informant. that led to arrest of 28 suspects with a credit card fraud case but the government later learned he was also feeding information to criminals and the feds say he's an old pro at this. he's already in federal custody charged in may of '08 with hacking into cash register
